It is life-the revelation of living experience: not following a pattern cut from some other man's attainments, but striving to ac- tualize the ideals Within one's self. Expression is from Within, and its results cannot be attained by mechanically obeying a rule. lt is the manifestation of the impulses of the soul. It is the study of human na- ture: but in that study we must just study self. Emerson said, Make the man and you have made the speaker . To be sincere, then, is the fundamental law. The department is gradually increasing and is exercising a greater influence on the school activities than ever before. The pageants and dramas put on under the auspices of this department have been uplifting and inspiring. The special classes for ministers and competent graduates from the various courses offered, are an asset in the list of attainments of our college. ew- 1924 Cfhe Jlrroua Music Graduates Q ' . .. .r ,. Each department has increased in numbers during the year also the character of the Work in the department has been of a high type. A detailed review of the activities of the Columbian Literary Society for this year cannot be given in the narrow confines of this page. There- fore, the outstanding events only are listed here. This society was re- organized in September with unusual interest and enthusiasm fo: the work of the ensuing year. Our Christmas, Washington, Sacredl and Musical programs, have shown much originality on the part of thelpro- gram committee and through their unceasing efforts, hidden treasures in the form of varied talents have been discovered, and brought to' light. We aspire to keep our organization in the way of continual advancement. Many have revealed their ability along literary, oratorical, dramatic, and musical lines: while the tennis, basket-ball and track teams have mani- fested a true spirit of sportsmanship in both victory and defeat. Every member has done his part willingly and thus contributed his bit toward making our Society a success. We are greatly indebted to Miss Johnny Jernigan, our Faculty repre- sentative for her untiring services rendered to the Society this year. We cannot place too high an estimate upon the benefit we receive from such an organization while we are attending Bethany-Peniel. J. M. CE . mf? nw- 1924 Cfho Jlrrow C? The Utopian Literary Society is a means of developing well-rounded character and is a spring of influence for noble inspiring life. Our aim is preparation for usefulness, mental, and spiritual. A good game of tennis or basketball is always enjoyed. Overwhelm- ing victory is not our goal, but clean, honest sportsmanship that can meet success or failure with equal dignity. ,- Athletics, however, is not our foremost purpose. We are a literary society, a living democracy where everybody has a chance. Especially con- ducive to good- work is the competition of the Red, White and Blue di- visions within, and the friendly rivalry of other Societies without. De- claiming, debating, writing of short stories, poetry and current events are among our actual accomplishments. ' Lf i A spiritual atmosphere that lends earnestness and grace is constantly sought. This is the first and all important factor in every attainment. The Utopian Literary Society is great in ability, but greater in purpose. , I A g 'Honor to our Alma Mater, Pride-and glory of midwest, Setting for the rarest jewel, For our own dear U. L. S. So it is with school Work. And the foundation for future success in securing . a deep and thorough education must be well begun in the grades: hence Bethany-Peniel College has kept her grade department up to the highest standard. Every boy and girl is a trinity-mental, physical and moral- and every part of that trinity should be developed while the mind is like wax and the impressions on it are lasting. In the latter stages of this plastic mind-adolescence this trinity is developed in a healthy, clean, Christian atmosphere in the grade department at B. P. They were heartily accepted. .There was a definite ur ose in the minds of the Facult and student 1 1 np p 4 4 Y body when this organization was brought into existence. ' Ther-e was a need of establishing a regular and orderly medium of communication betw-een the student body and the Faculty. The Student Qouncil in a great meausre formed a channel through which the will and wishes of the Faculty could be conducted to the student body. Self-expression is necessary to the best growth and development of school interests. The choosing of the Council in itself, is the self-expression of the student body. This discovers and sets apart leaders who might not be found in any other way. These leaders develop more efficiency in this capacity. The placing of the responsibility of having a part in the gen- eral work of the school helps to arouse greater loyalty to the school. Students, when responsibilities are placed on them will behave them- selves in a Worthy manner. They will initiate activities which will prove very helpful to the school. They Will learn to build up the school by such things as: programs, entertainments, campagns for building up the library and carry into execution many other projects which are worth while. They learn to CO-Operate with and stand by their leaders. In fact, there has come a happy mutual helpfulness both to the Faculty and student body which has made the school year full of happiness and success. N. K. QM sa 43- 1924 MI Cfhe Jlrrow G WE Jlt letics Man consists of soul, mind, and body, and his development is there- fore three-fold. If his soul only is subjected to the processes of growth, a fanatic resultsg if his mind alone is dev-eloped, the man would be an atheistg and if his development is limited to the physical side of his being, nothing but a prize-fighter could possibly be expected. Bethany-Piniel College, while realizing the importance of spiritual and mental development, and satisfying those needs, does not fail also, to realize the other essential, the necessity of physical exercise and for this purpose clean wholesome games are provided. Basket Ball is played enthusiastically by almost all the students of Bethany, match games generally being engaged in between Literary Socie- ties and High School classes. Tennis also, which is nationally admitted to be one of the world's best sports, is an important feature in our athletics. However, the most interesting athletic event, which occurs towards the close of the school year, and which is the climax of the athletic activi- ties of every school, is the Track Meet. At this time the stud-ents, who engage in athletics, and who previously had look-ed forward to this event with the most interest, demonstrate their abilities in contest. A student who fails to make good grades is not permitted to take part in any of these activities. Thus the students do not usually engage in these sports to the neglect of their school work.
