James Conyers “Get a good education so that you'll be able to get a good job,” or in other words, go to college. The inconsistency of this re- quirement has gradually become appar- ent. A “good job” can be found in fields other than the quadriatic equation; in es- sence, gone is the day of the all academic school. Southern Nash’s T I department is a shining example of the current trend toward career education. The department has expanded constantly since it began in 1968. It presently includes Technical Drafting, Electricity, Carpentry, Bricklaying, Commercial Sewing and Auto Mechanics. Its emphasis rests on the mentality of the mind. For example, in Electrical Industries students work as a group under the supervision of Mr. Bass. They are taught the technicalities and then apply it practically. In contrast, in Technical Drafting a stu- dent learns to visualize the linear struc- ture of a concrete object. The practical part comes when it is drawn. Who would be interested in the dimensions of a milk carton? Yet this is a part of the same skill involved in making a blueprint; one of the goals of Advanced Technical Drafting. The Bricklaying students build brick structures under Mr. Conyers’ super- vision, only later to dismount them again. Destination-Shop 4-Activity-Carpentry. Students in progress. Here the atmos- phere is totally removed. Close your eyes and you're on sight with a construction crew oblivious to all except the deafening roar of saws and the fragrance of saw- dust. In contrast, these four areas are also an example of the “togetherness” of Southern Nash. All are fundamentals for a universal symbol among families; a house. 95
