It serves the Law School as a teaching device by which students, Working under faculty supervision in a law office environment, are able to fulfill the roll and professional responsibilities of an attorney in private practice. The Clinic performs a valuable community service by handling actual cases for persons 'who cannot afford an attorney's fee, and in the process the students are exposed to some of the most dynamic and critical problems which face our society. The Clinic is staffed each semester by forty student attorneys who process more than 1200 cases a year. This case volume exceeds that of almost all law school operated clinics and compares very favorably with Legal Aid offices in many cities across the country. Office consultations and civil and criminal trial court appearances make up a majority of the cases handled through the Clinic. Working under the guidance of the Director and Associate Director the student attorneys conduct client interviews, advise clients as to possible courses of action, draft pleadings and other legal documents and participate in court proceedings. The student at- torney gains trial experience by being required to conduct at least one divorce trial and to participate in actual trials in the justice of the peace courts and in the Irving Teen Age Traffic Court program. The students also have an opportunity to participate with the Director in the trial of some serious criminal cases, to make local jail visits, to answer correspondence from inmates of various prisons, particularly the State Penitentiary at Huntsville, and to participate in the unusual program of legal counselling at the Fed- eral Correctional Institution at Seagoville.
