It serves the Law School as a teaching device by which students, Working under faculty supervision in a law office environment, are able to fulfill the roll and professional responsibilities of an attorney in private practice. The Clinic performs a valuable community service by handling actual cases for persons 'who cannot afford an attorney's fee, and in the process the students are exposed to some of the most dynamic and critical problems which face our society. The Clinic is staffed each semester by forty student attorneys who process more than 1200 cases a year. This case volume exceeds that of almost all law school operated clinics and compares very favorably with Legal Aid offices in many cities across the country. Office consultations and civil and criminal trial court appearances make up a majority of the cases handled through the Clinic. Working under the guidance of the Director and Associate Director the student attorneys conduct client interviews, advise clients as to possible courses of action, draft pleadings and other legal documents and participate in court proceedings. The student at- torney gains trial experience by being required to conduct at least one divorce trial and to participate in actual trials in the justice of the peace courts and in the Irving Teen Age Traffic Court program. The students also have an opportunity to participate with the Director in the trial of some serious criminal cases, to make local jail visits, to answer correspondence from inmates of various prisons, particularly the State Penitentiary at Huntsville, and to participate in the unusual program of legal counselling at the Fed- eral Correctional Institution at Seagoville. THE SOUTHWESTERN LEGAL FOUNDATION The Southwestern Legal Center is composed of the Southern Methodist University School of Law and The Southwestern Legal Foundation. While the primary purpose of the Law School is the preparation of students for the practice of law, The Southwestern Legal Foundation is an educational institution designed to provide continuing education for practicing attorneys and business ex- ecutives. In the academic year 1966-1967, the Foundation conducted 25 programs in various fields. Approximately 5,000 participants attended, coming from all the United States and many other nations. These programs were conducted under the auspices of the four educational centers of the Foundation, namely, The Continuing Legal Education Center, The International and Comparative Law Center, The International Oil and Cas Educational Center, and The Southwestern Law Enforcement Institute. The programs are scheduled as institutes and symposia of two to three days in duration, short courses of one to two weeks in duration, schools of four weeks in duration, and academies of seven to eight weeks in duration. An invited group of distinguished citizens in all professional and business fields comprise the Research Fellows of The Founda- tion, who work with all the educational centers and are responsible through their original support for the establishment of some of The F oundation's most successful programs. Each year The Foundation awards scholarships for some of its own noncredit programs and makes grants for accredited study in the Southern Methodist University Law School to both undergraduate and graduate students. The latter group includes foreign nationals who are pursuing advanced law studies. Augmented annually by eight to ten volumes, The Foundation's publications number more than 70 volumes, largely made up of institute and symposia proceedings. Oil and Gas Reporter, a monthly service, is one of The Foundation's oldest continuing programs. The Foundation was chartered in l9f1+7 as an educational and civic organization of businessmen, judges, lawyers, educators, government officials, and business groups, its stated purpose being to establish and operate legal institutes and any other related activities for the benefit of the Legal Profession, the Public, and the Government, to conduct institutes, research, and forums of Inter- national Law and Relations . . . tt if Robert G.
