LEGAL AID CLINIC In the Legal Clinic the law student faces the challenge of the actual practice of law. The Clinic was founded at Southern Methodist University in the fall of I947. This program was in a large measure made possible by a grant from the Ford Foundation through the National Council on Legal Clinics. The Legal Aid Clinic at Southern Methodist University is staffed each semester by forty student attorneys who process over I,OOO cases each year. The Clinic operates under the supervision of members of the Law School Faculty and a Student Chief Counsel appointed by the faculty. The Clinic is a front line training ground for the future lawyer. In a law office environment, the students, under the guidance of the faculty, as- sume the role and professional responsibilities of an attorney in private practice. They interview and counsel clients and provide indigents with a full range of legal services including the drawing of pleadings and par- ticipation at trial. Chief Counsel, Ronald Kessler, David Pickett and Gerald Livingston, Deputy Student Counsel, David Bolton, Faculty Director, Saul Baernstein and Sue Goolsby, Associate Directors, Joseph McKnight, Eugene Smith, William VanDercreek and Moss Wimbish, Advisors, Dr. Davis, Resident Psychiatrist.
