wi gt by no Every institution has a mascot or a symbol to signify what that said establishment stands for. The mascot gives the outsider a semblance of what the school is about, while giving the insider the inspiration to be proud. And that is the crux of any symbol, to elicit a certain, unex- plainable pride in an individualg a pride that says how glad you are to be a part of the institution. It allows all people to rally around that one objectg that sense of unity makes a school special. At SMU we are lucky enough to have the Mustang as our symbol. The mustang has always been a sign of strength, compassion, in- dependence, and willg these four characteristics typify many students at our school. For it is the Mustang that instills the hope from winning sports teams to publications. SMU's mascot, Peruna Cnamed after a drink of the 19209, still represents the student spirit with as much dignity and appropriateness today as in days past.
