I It is often the numerous little things a person does and says that endears him to his fellowman. With this thought in mind, we, the Senior Class of 1964, respectfully dedicate the twelfth edition of the TEKS to Mr. Elliott Mitchell. As business manager, Mr. Mitchell has exemplified genuine interest and devoted service in aiding us with our financial problems. From those of us he has helped comes a tribute to his understanding and thoughtfulness. From those of us whose only contact with him has been in extra-curricular activities comes sincere appreciation for his many contributions, his wise and patient guidance, and his willingness to help. His readiness to advise, combined with his ability to devise, characterizes a distinctive personality. We thank you, Mitch, both for ourselves and for the many others who share our esteem for you. 2 1 . 1 111111,J11 I I J 1 ti 1 F2 1111! In iust the past two years Mr. Hutchinson has brought about several maior improvements in our school. We now have a new dormitory as well as a new classroom building. The most recent and largest improvement of all is of course the cafeteria. There are hundreds of other less significant improvements which are not noticed, but we must remember that it takes many small bricks to construct a large building. Present as well as former students are deeply indebted to Mr. Hutchinson 'For his whole-hearted efforts to make MV-Tl a fine school. We are very fortunate to have a principal who pursues his work with such vigor. 3 ,t l 5: t flies i , 4' 14 :xv QILFI' W ' : '-1 . l.. 'H . . 191 1 ' -m9'l'ti'i I I. Smith, our Dean of Men, is a new man who fills a new iob at MV-TI. The office of the Dean of Men was sorely needed here, up to now, students with typical problems had no one person in whom to confide. Now Dean Smith stands ready and willing to help all students, no matter what their problems. He also serves as Registrar, Admissions OFl'icer, Assistant Principal, and Placements Director. Dean Smith graduated from Portland High School in 1948. He then played Professional baseball until 1951 when he entered the Army. In 1953 he married and then entered Murray State College, Kentucky, where he did undergraduate and graduate work, leaving in 1959 with a M.A. degree in Education Administration. He then re- turned to Portland to become an educational and vocational councilor at Deering High School. On 1, September, 1963, Deering's loss was MV-Tl's gain, when Mr. Smith was wel- comed here as Dean of Men. 19'5ZvT'47f 1':ilQ? For some, who plan on continuing their education, it is a stepping stone toward greater skills and accomplishments. But, for the majority of us, it marks an end to our formal education. This need not mean we cease to acquire knowl- edge in our profession from this point on. But in fact a greater burden is now ours, we must maintain the pace of progress. For, as we are now the replace- ment, we will some clay be the replaced. The time required to complete this cycle is largely dependent on our continued knowledge, and in this knowledge we must persist. As President of the Class of '64 I wish to thank all fellow classmates- for their help in making this office a most enioyable and rewarding experience. Some will be elated with their prospects, others will be disappointed. This is naturaI a.nd happens every year. Those who do not yet have iobs, do not despair. Your chance possibly may not come until the Fall. File applications to many companies where there may be a possibility of an opening. Do not be too fussy, you have to get your foot inside the door in order to gain experience. Above all, keep in touch with us in the office. Even though we give you a negative. reply every time you call, try us again every three or 'Four weeks. Openings occur anytime, and are not predictable. Mean- while, we use our leads to help locate positions. By October in a typical year, we generally have iob prospects but no graduates left to till them. Most of you by now have had some experience being interviewed by hiring personnel. You have found that, in addition to grades at MV-Tl and their own test results, these interviewers try to determine your ambition, your attitude, how well you can follow instructions, your emotional stability, and a host of other intangibles that make a good employee capable of advancement. As one large company interviewer said, We are not hiring men for next year or the year after, but for ten years from now. If the man we hire today is not well up the ladder then, we have made a poor choice now. So, on your iob, my advice to you is to attend to things related to your work but not necessarily required of it. You may think that a little extra is not noticed, but most supervisors have sharp eyes. However, do not expect to reach the top quickly. Continue to improve yourself by additional study, preparing your- self for that promotion when it comes. Be not afraid of responsibility, employers pay well for it. l frequently tell Seniors, Spend your first million dollars as you wish. How- ever, while using your second million, remember MV-Tl and give us a building or an endowment. We would be proud to have a Quinn Gymnasium or a Billing Scholarship fund given to MV-Tl! While we may smile at this notion now, sometimes a graduate will hit the jackpot. Good luck to all of you. like S -Q11 .40 'Men with fcsf cur ideas. -.a E Its going to be a long wulk It's o long hard haul. rN YY -YY .LJ ai-f. 4 4kL.A.. Gorryl . . Whaf's he doing? This fact proves that the students of MV-Tl are interested in the activities of the school. lt also proves that the Student Union is operated in a democratic fashion. I believe that, with such remarkable participation of all the students, this will be one of the biggest and best years Maine Vocational-Technical Institute has witnessed. On behalf of the Student Council, we thank the administration, the faculty, and each fellow student for their part in making this possible. We wish the freshmen the best in their senior year and encourage the gradu- ating seniors to continue their active part in their role in society upon graduation. -Donald C. The life story of our school paper, THE WANDERER, has been one of constant improvement and this year was no exception. The first edition came out early in the school year to welcome the new students. Since that edition, each suc- ceeding issue has contained improvements which the staff feel are necessary in order to achieve our ultimate goal of editing a school paper which will be of indispensable value in the improvement of our school. A school paper accomplishes many things which the average student does not realize - it stimulates school spirit, keeps him informed of campus news, advances school programs, and promotes the school to the public while helping to unite the students, faculty, and administration. We hope to continue to serve this school and share in its future in the years ahead. In proud appreciation of the Administration, of our fellow students, and of interested organizations and citizens who have made this book possible, the Yearbook Stott of TEKS for '64 has humbly attempted to create a record of a memorable school year. This yearbook was designed to stress our sincerity in dedications, appreciations, and other COPY: also to point out the lighter, more carefree moments which we have taken so much for granted. Later, when the impending forces of time have severed the bonds which tie all MV-Tl indi- viduals together, will this presentation be adequate remembrance of our worth- while experience at the school of our choice? Our able advisor and the entire stat? have worked diligently, and hope for proof positive. - 'Carl E. Ross Eclitor-in-Chief 66 EIGHT LIFTI G CLUB Front Row, Left fo Right: D. Kilton, L. Bean, J. Principal Earl Hutchinson appointed a Faculty Library 'Committee in 1963 to work on this problem. A library room was secured, books and periodicals were contributed by the faculty and staff to 'Form a nucleus, a part-time librarian was employed. The work began in earnest even though no funds were in sight. However, it was not until a student Library Council was formed that our project received its real impetus. About 25 students responded to a call to organize and proceeded to elect Thom Bourgois and Steve Merrill as their Co-Chairmen. A book drive was launched by the Council on February 6, 1964. Speakers included Senator Sam Hinds, Principal Earl Hutchinson, Alumni Representative Wilbur MacPherson, Co-Chairmen Thom Bourgois and Steve Merrill, Librarian Claudia Story and Chairman Walter Wood. A goal of 4,000 books and 5400 was set. Jim Herwood and Ronald Campbell, Book Drive Chairmen, set the pace and immediately secured about 500 volumes. Many boys and men on campus have been involved in making our temporary facilities adequate for the present. Since we consider a good library necessary to a good technical or vocational education, we hopefully commit ourselves to this task, mindful that it is one thing to overcome inertia and another thing to persevere. With proper financial support we will one day be proud of a first-class library in a first-class school. 3-4. j-.f Wilbur MacPherson repre- sents the alumni. -s F51 x 1 Hg.: , 1. -... ,it .I- 'Yu L ,. 1 , I M U., - KN an rt u 3 .- JJ- he ' 'f 5171 'S ,f. is ,Q L 1 . Alumni Association. After several preliminary meet- ings were held, about one hundred and fifty alumni assembled in the new caf- eteria, adopted a Constitu- tion and By-Laws, and elected a slate of officers and a board of directors. Following the business meeting, the wives and sweethearts of the men Alumni Otticers James Davis, President, David Rawnsley, Vice-President, Robert Latham, Secretary: Everett Boynton, Treasurer. danced to the tune of the Hi-Fi Club's recordings, The ladies had spent the first part of the evening watch- ing a culinary arts demon- stration by Chef Oliver Brisse. Those who have worked assiduously to bring the Alumni Association into be- ing must truly feel re- warded at this time. Arn- old Soule, who edited and produced the Technician must be especially glad.
