ROMULUS LEE GRAVES The Senior Class of T963 dedicates this issue of the TEKS with sincere affection to Romulus Graves, perhaps better known to his students as Yogi, and to the faculty as Rom. Mr. Graves, a native of North Carolina, was graduated from Guilford College, North Carolina, in 'I940 with a B.S. in Physics. It was there that he met his wife who graduated in the same class. Taking time out from playing baseball and football, he managed to visit her home in Maine. From that moment on, Mr. Graves became a converted Yankee. The South's loss was our multiplied gain as they now have three fine children-one boy and two girls. The records show graduate work in the School of Electrical Engineering at Harvard University, and studies in the Signal Corps Radar School, Camp Murphy, Florida. During World War II, Mr. Graves was a Maior in the U.S, Army Signal Corps attached to the Air Force. He taught numerous short courses in theory and maintenance of airborne radio and radar. Mr. Graves has been an instructor at MVTI since its beginning in Augusta in 1946. He first taught mathematics and science, prior to becoming the Industrial Electricity Instructor. He, with Jim Johnson, originated the first Athletic Associa- tion. Mr. Graves coached the first baseball teams, and even made all the original bats. Being an enthusiastic archer, he founded the Archery Club of which he is still the faculty advisor. He plays softball on the faculty team annually and for the IE team when needed. As anyone from IE can tell you, his home is always open to those who need extra scholastic help. A sincere Thank you to one whose efforts have helped the school and the students to grow, each in his own way. 2 In iMem0'riam RAYMOND S. DEWEY VARNEY HALL CUSTODIAN 1957 - 1962 ln one sense there is no death. The life of a soul on earth lasts beyond his departure. You will always feel thot life touching yours, that voice speaking to you. He lives on in your life ond in the lives of all others that knew him. - Angelo Patri. 3 EARL M. HUTCHINSON PRINCIPAL ADMIN ISTRATIO A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL MVTI IN THE YEARS AHEAD September enrollment, I962, was the largest ever -347 students. With more than twice as many appli- cants as can be admitted, a high quality student body can be selected. It is expected that MVTI can easily double its enrollment in the next few years, provided adequate financial support is given by the State, particularly in personnel, equipment, and supplies. The annexation of the Air Guard property has made it possible for MVTI to expand its building facilities. The old hospital has been renovated into a dormitory and the large barracks structure partially converted into a classroom building. A new dining hall and kitchen is expected to be completed for use in September, 1963. Building plans include many requests of future Legislatures. Early priorities are the completion of the Classroom Building and the erection of a Gymnasium-Auditorium-Recreation Center. The latter, when completed, will permit the present Canteen to be converted into a central library. The present kitchen and dining room is destined, with renovations, to be- come part of the Culinary Arts course. The old class- room building will become the temporary headquarters of Electronics Technology until such time as a new brick building can be obtained to house both the Electrical and Electronics courses. New courses prob- ably will require new buildings to house them. It is hoped that the Machine Shop addition will finally be completed within a year and that a class- room addition to the Welding Shop will soon be well under way. Undoubtedly, as school population grows, more additions to existing buildings will be needed. A new porch for Varney Hall, removal of bunkers with accompanying landscaping, and the completion of the athletic field should produce an attractive campus. To the members of this graduating class: you have seen some changes in your two years at MVTI, come back in ten years and see the progress. -wiln..,....,..,, ELLIOTT B. MITCHELL 4 MAURICE V. HOPKINSON July 20, 1941 -January 20, 1963 Larry Hopkinson was a native of Dixtield, Maine and graduated from Dixfield High School in 1960. He enrolled in the lndustrial Electricity course at MVTI in September of 1961. Larry proved both an interested student and an active participant in school life. In his freshman year, Larry was a member of the Skating Rink Committee and the softball, volleyball, and soccer teams. This year he was again engaged in soccer, and was a member of the Yearbook Staff, Alumni Committee, and Awards Committee. The Dormitory Council of Varney Hall elected Larry their President this year. Larry Hopkinson became the victim of an automobile accident while on his way home for the weekend, and his loss has been deeply felt on campus. Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Marguerite Hopkinson, and a brother and sister. 10 JAMES D. WILES- President DENNIS M. GARDNER - Vice President OFFICERS - CLASS 0F 1963 It seems impossible that we, the graduating class of 1963, will soon be gone. We leave behind us two years of learning which has marked only the beginning of a carefully chosen future. It has been a long, hard journey for those of us still together, but well worth the fight. For it was only yesterday that we stood together as strangers and listened as Mr. Hutchinson gave us some well chosen advice. Shake hands with the person on your right and then with the person on your left. The records show that one of every three who register does not graduate. Don't let that one be you. We hope that the graduating classes to come will profit by these words as we have. I would like to thank all my classmates for giving me the opportunity to serve as your President. I have enjoyed this experience and hope I have fulfilled all my obligations. I wish everyone the Best of Everything. James D. Wiles - President WILLIAM A. JORDAN - Secretary JAMES R. At the beginning of the year, the yearbook staff unanimously felt that a change in the name would be an improvement, and the results ofa student opinion poll verified the staff's feelings. On November 30, i962 the students exercised their voting privileges and chose the name TEKS for the new year- book name. TEKS are the Greek letters standing for Tau Epsilon Kappa Sigma which when analyzed, correlates with many of the technical aspects of MVTI. Tau, the nineteenth letter of the Greek alphabet, is significant in Physics where it stands for torque. Since torque is the moment of a tangential force tending to produce rotation around a point, many other technical courses make use of the word Tau. Also, Tau is the constant of timer. Epsilon, the fifth letter of the alphabet, is denoted as the base of the natural logarithmic system and is used most frequently in mathematics where Epsilon equals the limit fl-l-lfnln for n infinite or 2.7l828'l8 .... Kappa, the tenth letter of the alphabet, is ,used in technical formulas as a constant. A constant in a formula may be on experimentally determined mathe- matical factor whose magnitude does not change. Sigma, the eighteenth letter of the alphabet is a technical symbol indicating the summation of and used primarily in math. incidentally, but appropriately, TECHS, a variation of this term, is used by the Varsity Baseball and Basketball teams. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT ressive in others, has The Student Council, slow in some matters and agg l' h d reat deal this year Each man has given as much as he accomp is e g g . possibly could for the welfare of MVTI and its students. Most of us hope some- d MVTI will be an accredited technical college with three and four year courses. CY Until that day comes, it is our duty as students and alumni to spread the merit . . I of MVTI across the country. Then and only then will we receive natnona recognition. Soon, each member of the Class of 1963 will leave MVTI and take his respective place on this sphere. Some will leave MVTI with a note of sorrow ' e well while others will be overo ed, but all will a ree these two ears wer l Y 9 Y spent. Many learned from books, but most learned more from the personalities ' h lf f th St dent Council of those we associated with here at MVTI. The reporters, representing each class on the campus, worked diligently as the first deadline rolled around for shop news, iokes and editorials. Even when the reporters' deadline is met, The Wanderer is far from being published. Mrs. Dewey, the advisor, and Mrs. Janson, the typist, along with the rest of the editorial staff, are confronted with the arduous task of editing, revising, blue- penciling and typing. With everyone working together as a team, the paper finally goes to press, and shortly after, it's in the canteens. The staff has a satis- fied feeling of a iob well done, but it is not possible to rest on their laurels, as all too soon the deadline for the next issue rolls around. The school year passes so quickly and before it's realized, the staff have written their last reports and the last Wanderer is published. But there are no regrets, for the staff feels proud that they could be an important part of the campus life at MVTI. -Editor, Leslie A. The material is taken from their lives and activities. Students come and students go. Teams win and lose. The campus grows. All of this is recorded annually in the yearbook. The making of this book is part work, part fun, part history, and part of each of us. Those who put away and save this edition will come to realize its sentimental value in the years ahead. I thank everyone who helped to make this yearbook possible. This includes all the people who bought advertisements and provided us with the necessary funds. I had a staff who, somehow, always came through and made deadlines. Mr. Wood, our Faculty Advisor, provided the necessary guidance and incidentally took our aerial photographs. Mr. Hutchinson allowed us time for meetings, and Mr. Mitchell kept our Business Manager straight. Portland Lithograph Company, Wendell White Studio, and Del Cargill Studio are to be complimented for their work. Wendell White took our Faculty portraits, and Del Cargill our Senior portraits and group photographs. And last but not least, thanks to David Smith for running so many necessary errands. -Ca rl L. The MVTI cagers completed this season with 5 wins and 7 losses under the capable direction of our new coach, Bill Harris, The Techs started off with a sizzling 5 victories, but due to midsemester dropouts were unable to win the remainder of the games. A lot of credit is due the boys who completed the schedule, still playing to win. Bob Carlisle led the team with 180 points. Paul Erskine was second in scoring honors with 113. A highlight of the season was the overnight trip to Manchester, N. H., where the Techs won games over the New Hampshire Technical Institute and the New Hampshire School of Commerce and Accounting.
