The voice of civilization, strangling in these vapors, remains but a muf- fled gasp. The very freedom for which our fathers fought so valiantly two decades ago, stands at the edge of the bottomless abyss-their sacrifices seemingly futile. Now, we stand, as they did, at the portals of manhood and of woman- hood a little frightened but filled with a deter- mination to remain free. The elder generation need not worry about us. If they would listen, they would hear the thunder underneath, and we will not stop at the roar of the dictators' de- struction, we will stop with the cessation of war -forever. We hate war, and that hatred will carry us on to our inevitable success. UUNTENT SCHOOL SENIORS CLASSES ACTIVITIES ABOUT HAVERFORD I' I 6' 95, Q fa .42- sf Q8 Q K .s- ig' ls ,gp ,g if 'Q 53,1 . 'N' 5 x T THIS time when our country is endeavoring to preserve our democratic way of life so that we may continue to enjoy the freedom and privileges that the United States offers its people, each and every citizen must aid his country to the utmost of his ability. Therefore, we of the Classes of 1942 dedicate our yearbook to the teachers, former pupils and graduates of Haverford High School who are so willingly serving in the armed forces to defend our great nation. We recognize the sacrifices they are making and know they will demonstrate to the world the character of the United States. -H.L.K. SUPERINTENDENT j. FRANKLIN CARTE B.S., M.A., Ed,D. What- ever the reactions may be upon leaving, school has played quite a part in these persons' lives and a new and wider field is opening before them. Many members of the January Class are already facing the world on their own, and in the June Class much is being anticipated regarding future plans. Three years ago we entered the Senior High School bewildered, but we gradually ac- customed ourselves to the new ways and by the time we became seniors were able to assume posi- tions of responsibility. Although the Washing- ton trip was denied the june Class, there. are other pleasant remembrances-the Prom, the Ball and the successful Senior Plays. This book, too, is evidence of our achievement, and we hope it will always call back pleasant memories to the graduates of 1942.-M.-I.R. Thirteen DAVID E. PARK Dave, 224 Campbell Avenue S. Hobby-His xylophone. answers Fifryfjive LTHOUGH this book may appear to be a volume principally concerned with the grad- uating classes, the undergraduates have a definite part in the activities of the school. True, seniors hold most of the school offices but juniors and sophomores in their class and home room offices are training to discharge the more important of- fices later on. Our athletic teams are made up of members of all classes, and those who may not be eligible at first must train to take the places of those who leave. It is to the underclassmen, looking ahead to the time when they take over from those who have gone, that we allot this portion of our yearbook.-M.J.R. Sixty-three RATIFYING successes marked the extra-cur- ricular program at Haverford this year. The soccer team led oil by winning the suburban championship for the first time in the history of the school. Close by, the girls' fencing team came through with an undefeated season. Sev- eral members of the band, orchestra, and A Cappella choir won high honors in state contests. As always the art and secretarial clubs gave un- limited assistance around the school. This year has been a good one for the student publications, all of which improved their sheets and increased the circulation. A new organization of timely importance is the Red Cross club which meets after school to do Red Cross work.-B.P. Sixtyffwe AVERFORDS team this year, although small and comparatively light, showed fine spirit. With the able coaching of Mr. Stinson and Mr. juenger, they were able to build themselves up to a team of which the Fordians could be proud. Even though they did not win many games, their spirit made them morally victorious. At the open' ing game with Valley Forge, the team, which was greatly outweighed, took over the opponents in grand style. At the game with Radnor the fellows showed that they could give as well as take, even when they were deinitely the underdogs. As a climax of the season, the Fordmen held the Upper Darby score down to a minimum. So here's to the team that provided the loyal crowd with many thrillsg and, although many members of the team sustained injuries, they always came back Hghting. -D. R. ANKING among the most progressive student governments our Student Council strongly up' holds the ideals of democracy. Under the ex' pert guidance of Mr. Hallowell the group has conscientiously striven to carry out its duties and has succeeded to the limit of its powers. The Executive Committee, an excellent organizaf tion for the centralization of representative effort, has become well known through its success in startf ing lunch period dancing, its services as a watchdog, and its action on the hundred of little troubles which constantly bother fastidious students.gH.M.E. Seuentyfsix T THE fall induction ceremony of the National Honor Society, Dr. Felix Morley, president of Haverford College, addressed the assembly, em' phasing the need for Scholarship, Leadership, Servf ice and Character, the four Cardinal qualities of the society. Mr. K. Hobart Roatch spoke on Amerif can Citizenship at the ceremony in the spring, at which time the students selected by the members of the society and the faculty, were admitted to the organization. The National Honor Society is made up of A, B, and C students in the upper third of their classes who meet the requirements set forth by the society. HE BOYS' HifY is an honorary organization dedicated to service about the school. Under the sponsorship of Mr. Hughes, a small per' centage of each class is inducted into the society at each semester. At this time the new members are initiated, the climax of which is the initiation banquet in which they combine with the Girls' HifY and dress up in ridiculous costumes. The organizaf tion of forty members is often called upon to rep' resent the school in various ways such as help to keep order at football and basketball games.-DR, Sevemyfeight HAT did the Girls' HifY do for their school and community this year? During the fall the 1 girls collected articles for the NeedlefWork Guild, sold candy at the football games, sold Christ' mas seals, and provided clothing for poor children in the community. ln the spring the members helped with sugar rationing. They gave a mother' andfdaughter hanquet, sponsored makefup demon' strations, and served at Boy Scout dinners. Some members were selected to attend panel discussions at Valley Forge. At the end of the year the girls and hoys had a joint party at the Ardmore Y. M. C. A.-P.A.j. Seventyfnine KFIRST SEMESTER? L, , AVERFORD High's Band, with its Hfty members, directed by Mr. Allison, is a familiar institution at Haverford. During the football season, the Band was present at all of the games and rallies, providing a striking display of the school colors, and giving pep to the contestants and spectators by playing stirring marches, In December, in collaboration with the Orchestra and the A Cappella Choir, the Band participated in the Music Night program, while in the spring it presented its annual concert. A woodwind quintet and a clarinet quartet chosen from the hand played on various other occasions throughout the year. During the Christmas season, a group of Band members played carols in the halls before school and during the lunch periods.-H.K.H. CHARLES B.
