The Medici for Social Outlet Are Many No college presents the front of all work ancl no play. Southern is no exception. Many stuclents actually spencl twice as much time in outsicle activity than they put in on the hooks. The Southern stuelent is, in gen- eral, a social fellow. He often procrastinates. Selalonz really puts his best foot forward. His outlook is often a little narrow. The year 1953 was one loaclecl with great events: a queen was crowneel, a majestic moun- tain conquerecl, a homh of cleathly, unlzearfl-of power exploclecl, a nuclear sulJmari11e lmilt, anal much aclo about a novelist lost anel regaineel. But none of these things were oliservefl with any great emotion hy the Southern stuclent. For the time lieing at least, he was more ahsorlveel in himself anal the campus worlel arounil him.

0ur Umverslty Too self conscious to be smug - too progressive to be modest . . Southern has suffered growing pains the last few years. She has adjusted admirably, however. Oh- jects of the offering of dollars to the academic gods often seemed misdirected, lout slowly evolving was the finished product - a modern complete univer- sity. There are, also, aspects of the university that cannot he improved with finances: its intellectual- ism, its awareness, its sensitivity. The problem, at times, seems not to he one of progress, lout of adjustment.
