Page page page page page page page page F OREWORD j Time is the journal of all menis lives. Uniquely it is a collection of autobiographies of all things that have ever existed. This journal, Time, is composed of memories, recollections of things that have past. The interesting factor of this journal, is that it has always caused perplexity and wonder to those who have tried to analyze it. For time waits for no mang it continually gathers memories. . The l969 Echoes Staff has tried to record just a few pages of Time in order to present to you memories of the 1968-69 school year. The excitement of a modemistic and large school, the exchange of properous ideas are the keys to the remembrance of this successful year. Now we invite you to take just a moment to look at a few memories from the journal of time. 3 DEDICATIO To acquire admiration as well as respect requires a distinctive individual - an individual who will sacrifice valuable time to help and aid others. An individual who is distinguishable by the motive of serviceg one who finds time to participate and enjoy - this is the individual the 1968-69 Echoes' Staff has chosen for the dedication of Echoes' 69. For the guidance so willingly given, for the school spirit so actively displayed, and the humor so warmly shared, this yearbook is dedicated to you - Mrs. Esther Stacy. M wr- is APPRECIATIO Though Time continually changes, the human emotion of gratitude will remain constant. The 1968-69 Echoes Staff has, among their memories of this school year, memories of a delightfully whirling experience of the execution of Echoes 69, - mistakes corrected, layouts rejected, and hurried dead lines met. Sharing our confusion and misadventures, were two amazing people - the Echoes staff still wonder how they could have possibly withstood those little questions, the bewildered hub-bub and the mischief that all went on behind that Yearbook Room's door. They helped us with a critical eye and a guiding hand, and with the use of that remarkable ingredient - patience. For such an intinite amount of guidance offered, it is indeed difficult to express all the gratitude we feel. Mrs. Redman and Mrs. Williams, may we and every 3-R sheet, every red cropping pencil and eraser that went into the production of Echoes 69', bid you our sincerest Thank you! PRINCIPAUS MESSAGE F. Markham Wingate, Principal 77 ,,,, ,W 7, ,,,, ,, Change Is is said that we are living at a time when change is the most important facet of our total environment. The generation gap at the college and high school level is said to have its basis in the resistance of the older adult group to changes proposed by the young adults. While there is undoubtedly some truth in this thesis, is it also not true that this is no recent phenomenon. To establish this proposition, we need go no farther back in history than to the days of that witty, but wise old fellow, Mark Twain. Mark Twain points out his amazement at how much his father learned in that short period of seven years while young Mr. Clemens grew from fourteen 1141 years of age to twenty-one QD years of age. While total resistance to change is stupid, it is easy to establish a claim for selective health resistance. What changes would any of us propose for these propositions: l. Respect for the rights of your fellow mang 2. Tolerance for the frailties of others in the same proportion as we seek from them for our owng 3. Equality under the law and in the eyes of Godg 4. Truth as best our limited concept can establish it. We think this requires no answer. The warm, familiar breeze lingered 'as the year stepped upon the threshold of all. Through freshly painted doors, Southern's students passed to be greeted by a completely new environment. Lurking in halls, peering through faces, change invaded every part and particle of Southern High School. Something new, something strange - this change was to be met. , i, 9 Change is often accompanied by confusion - the unfamiliar is difficult to conquer. Organization of classes and procedures had to be altered to meet the requirements which change demands. Every member ofthe school had to learn to appreciate the changeg for change is as we experience life - we rarely notice how much we appreciate it until we are about to lose it. Y Y V V 'B' 0 1 MARSHA STALLINGS, 1968 HOMECOMING QUEEN I As leaves fall to be covered by snow, fall enters into winter, and as the strangeness of the school and its system become familiar, fears and doubts begin to disappear. The system runs smoothly as the population of Southern becomes confident in its new surroundings. Tyrone Makell presents a homecoming gift to Marsha Stallings. 1967 Homecoming Queen, Caryn Castro, crowns the 1968 Homecoming Queen, Marsha Stallings. Mrs. Smith directs the seniors in Curtain Going Up . i Winter slides into spring. With a sense of security, Southern's faculty and students begin to experiment with the advantages of a new school. The senior play, Curtain Going Up, and the music departmenfs presentation of Brigadoon,' put the auditorium into full use. As Southern ventured into the new, the year was coming to an end. A class graduated, another will enter. Southern continues to change. -1 . - ' ff-fs 'Q gigs fesgii' . K V ME' Ifiiilwfl ETF i ' Faye Salisbury has the role of Elsie in the senior play. E e l V l ? Wrapped in the definite glory of being the ranking students of the school, each senior has experienced a year filled with memories of a victorious Homecoming and dance, a Christmas and Sweetheart dance, and that splendor of the 1968-69 Prom. Then, of course, there was the unforgettable senior play. Each of these events has meaning for seniors, for this will be the last opportunity for them to participate in such activities. The Class of '69 was an active, mischievous class. Senior slop day, and struggling for seniors' rights, such as a senior's lunch line or a senior's lounge, were a few of the activities in which the seniors actively participated. They were also a class that wished to be recognized, and it appears they will be for some time by all who see their imprint on the school's baby-blue water tower. Perhaps the reason for this recognition is due to the fact that the class of '69 will probably by the last of the smaller graduating classes. Seniors, greatly outnumbered by underclassmen, had the privilege of being the first graduating class of Southern Senior High School, Harwood, Maryland. Yes, 1968-69 will be a year filled with great memories for seniors. A year when they had to prepare for that future a step away. Every senior has been given a background and solid foundation for his life ahead. Now he must completely enter the adult world and meet the future. For each senior in the class of '69 may this thought be with you opon your graduation - This is not'-the end It is not even the beginning of the end But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning. - Winston Churchill 41 Steve Parks, a graduate I beg your pardon it was Beethoven's Sth, not Aretha. 1t's been a tall day for a long girl. Scholastically, there are scholarship tests and college boards to be taken. Juniors must prepare educationally for that vast future just a few years away. Socially, a student's junior year is a whirling sea of activities. The junior class of 1968-69 spent an active, busy year earning money to add to their treasury. The result of the bake sales and magazine campaign was a night of splendor at that memorable 1968-69 Junior - Senior Prom. Besides the decorations, the glamour of the night and the memories that went with it, this yearis Prom was marked by the juniors, privilege of using our new school's facilities to prepare for their Prom. The distinction of courses is much more evident and there is much preparation for the important years to come. The sophomore class of 1968-69 was fully aware of what lay in the future for them. Preparing for college tests to come, interested sophomores took practice Merit Scholarship tests. The class felt to be ready for theirprom next year, they should begin now to provide a solid foundation in their treasury. Egg sales, bake sales, and sponsorship of buses to away games were among the sophomores many activities to raise money. 80 Our gals cheer the Bulldogs on to victory. Ask any member of the 1968-69 basketball team, and they can tell you what change is. For Southern's basketball team has improved in comparison to past seasons. Displaying a 7-7 record, Southern's Bulldogs placed fourth in the county league. Among our outstanding athletes, Southern is proud to recognize senior Joe Wilde? captain of the basketball team this year. In recognition of this aspiring athlete, note should be made of his selection to the All-County Basketball Team for the second year. With 997 varsity scoring points, and his achievement as a basketball player, Joe was named Most Valuable Player for the year 1968-69. The Bulldogs move in for the rebound. Down the court, down the court. Go! Go! Southern shoots for two. The 1968-69 Varsity Wrestling Team was successful with a 9-0 record, while tying only one match. In addition to this excellent record, Southern's wrestling team was named Anne Arundel County Champions, an honor which they not only deserve, but also worked very hard to achieve. This great triumph was brought about under the supervision of Mr. Al Hunt. This honor and great record would not have been possible without the long, hard hours which were put in after school by the team and Mr. Hunt. I love how you hold me! Just as the school has met changes this year with progress and modernization, so has it been with the Echoes Statf. Perhaps the most evident change in the year- book is the enlarged size - from a 8 X ll to a 9 X l2 . Also, if you have not yet noticed - close your yearbook for a moment ibut keep your place with your fingerj, and look at the spine of the yearbook. For the convenience of possessors of a '69 Echoes, you will End the year and title of the yearbook. The readefs convenience has also been considered with the addition of an index. The student life section of the book is printed for the first time on a specially textured and tinted paper known as Contempore. This year, the Echoes staff has tried to achieve realistic memories. Candids of everyday and special events were used in place of the numerous posed pictures. Another attempt to modernize the yearbook can be found in the advertising section. Throughout the ad section, scenes of the contributing advertisers' establishments appear. Yes, the yearbook staff has experienced and suffered through the production of Echoes '69, just as every yearbook stall' does. There were lost pictures, mistakes to be corrected, and hectic deadlines to meet, yet they enjoyed every whirling minute of it. For the Stat? of 1969 has realized the purpose of Echoes '69 - to present to you, the student body and faculty of Southern Senior High School, a distinctive journal of memories of the exciting and challenging l968-69 school year. Because the state law requires persons under eighteen to have Driver's Education before acquiring their licenses, Driver's Education classes have become quite popular. To meet the demands of applicants, four instructors were employed this year. Facilities for practice and storage of equipment were not completed for the Band until late into the school year. Yet, under these disadvantages, Southern's Band survived and brought to the school and public three fine musical programs. Leaming to play Richard Dorsey, Scott Miller, John Powell, David Woody, Wayne Claytor, Don Sullins, Don Cosden. CHORUS Sharing the misfortune of incomplete facilities with the band, the chorus did not let this obstacle bar its way. After performing for the Christmas PTA meeting, the chorus labored in preparation for the May production of Brigadoonf' The admiration of such a production was further complimented by the newly completed auditoriumin which the musical took place. The Chorus' activities have indeed contributed to the cultural aspect of Southern Senior High School. sl' e Mrs. Ward First Row: Ferrol McFaddin, Iva Cox, Pat Orner, Robert Watson, Kathy Perrie, Dana Winner, Susan Melton: Third Row: Judy Nutwell Barbara Chapman, Rebecca Jones, April Sellars, Mrs. Ward, Second Sharon Bast, Shelia Brown, Joyce Moreland, Charlyne Brice Mary Row: Marie Bilzor, Dedi Diggs, Lawrence Sherman, Mark VanLunen, Coates, Carol Prentice, Kathy Graham. Through experience one often finds this education. This year many of Southern's students have learned the importance of responsibility. Marsha Stallings isis. as Buddy Liddy operates the cash register at Britt's in Parole Plaza. 142 y WORKERS This year there has been a shortage of teachers and substitutes. It was at these necessary times that the administration employed student teachers. Each of these students were held responsible for the control and execution of the regular teacher's classes. Education, though, does not hide itself within the school building. Education extends far wider than that. In many local stores and business one finds Southern's students peeking over counters or smiling at customers. Terry Wertz smiles at a customer in Sear's catalog department. Mary Leatherbury and Peppermint Patty put up a school bulletin board V 1 ' ...af -1 ft Buddy Samples shows shoes to a customer in Sears. Sandra Trott substitutes in Home Ec. classes l Whether working part-time and after school, or substituting in South- ern's classrooms, Southern's students have learned that responsibility is a definite part of education. Eddie Jett works at Hack's in Annapolis. LIBRARY The newly completed library this year has clearly provided many tasks for the numerous student library workers. In order to hasten the opening of the library, these students prepared over 8,000 books for the shelves by stamping, covering, and shelving books. Students have been in charge of the disbursement of audio-visual equipment and materials. They have aided our librarian, Miss Bogle, by taking care of collecting and giving passes to library-bound students, and taking charge of the check-out desk. Whether filing catalog cards, or dusting and arranging furniture, the student library workers have contributed greatly to the effectiveness and appearance of the library. Eugene Causey supervises the check-out desk. 146 Books and more books. A-V Aide Tom Hall previews a film k Preston Hartge if, .Zigi I , -, W.
