P Foreword The thrill of achievement, the disappointment of failure, and the wonder of new ideas-these aspects of everyday school life frequently called to mind as emotions are mir- rored in our hopes and accomplishments. Life this year at Southern has heen a composite of these feelings reflected in our activities, This challenge is met hy our laughter and tears and upon its achievement is built our future success. A yearhook should serve as ai hook of these rememlmrances -both good and had for the year it records. We will have succeeded in fulHlling this task if, while reading the 1968 Echoes, this phrase comes to mind- lt NVas A Very Good Year. Contents Student Life Sports Organizations Faculty Underclassmen Seniors Advertising 2 ' V 'NT I , I F Y I E i i I 3 Dedication A smile of encouragement to the down-hearted is like a beam of light shining through dark clouds. Instilliug initiative in those who have no motivation marks a special achievement. When a teacher recognizes her students as growing adults and listens to their prob- lems with patience and sincerity, the reaction of the student is im- mediate and positive. To one who has befriended her students and inspired high ideals, we, the staff of the '68 Echoes, dedicate this yearbook to Mrs. Anna P. jones. 4 N w 1 I 1 W w w , 1 , 5 i N 3 1 1 5 Because she was always there, and always ready to help Mrs. Esther Redman receives the special Appreciation of the Staff. 6 Principafs Message One of the prime ingredients in making a democratic society function is that of Trust: It is certainly true in the operation of a school system. The mutter of trust begins at the highest level and dispenses its blessings, or lack of it, to every individual involved. It seems amazing that something so easy' to give should so often he found wanting. To trust your associates requires only the simplest logic imaginable. One needs to grant his associates only the same high resolve and idealism that he reserves for him- self. Having erred often himself and heing granted self-pardon, he should understand this same fraility in others. If our community, our faculty and our students deserve any handshakes for the fine job that has been exhibited here at Southern in integrating our faculty and stu- dent body, the key is Trust . Let us all hope that this atmosphere never leaves us. -fes- 7 0 K! , FP Mi STUDENT LIFE Student body pays tribute to their King and Queen. B Prom refreshments are enjoyed in the cafeteria. 10 Late in the school year, 1966-67, the class of '68 presented the junior-Senior Prom, Carden of Paradise . Many mein- bers of the class did a great deal of work and worrying in preparation. The effort proved well-spent, as those attending en- joyed everything, including the entertain- ment provided by the Soul Masters . This year began with the school again on split shifts. Freshmen through seniors especially enjoyed the relief of two early four-day weekends. juniors are still alive after hours of decorating. A student gets his chance. Sometimes it looks like a cell. Scott Miller, President, and Mr. Cates, advisor, led the Student Council in its many pursuits. It ran the assemblies, the Christmas food drives, and the sale of the school pictures. Three officers were elected from each homeroom, that aided in homeroom aifairs. 96 Leading the list of activities the eighth grade participated in were the junior high band and chorus. The majorettes grew from three to six members, the majority from class of '72. South- ern should be proud of the eighth grade for all of their achievements. f r Q! 1 v as 'il' 'N 3 - .. - S ,, .H ,T 1 4 I 1' ll ' vi 2 ii? f I I , MM F I lu!l . f i gg t A V I ' 4 X' 1 f 4. Seventh Grade This was a year of many changes for the sev- enth grade. They went from the oldest to the youngestg from one teacher all day to three or more in one clayg from a nine to three schedule to a twelve to five schedule. They enjoyed the privilege of picking a few of their subjects. 103 The seventh grade elected representatives that helped make the Student Council nm smoothly. Each homeroom had its own offices to aid the teachers. The class of '73 partici- pated in the Annual Magazine drive, benefiting the P.T.A, The year 1967168 was a promising start for the seventh grade. The heights achieved by the Seniors could not have been reached without the guidance of Miss Klaas, our advisor. The executive commit- tee, President Debbie johnson, and Miss Klaas planned the amnual Christmas and Valentine's Day dances. The senior play was another of the class projects that was a success through the leadership of the advisor-officer combination. The nostalgia that was in the air during the year was cli- maxed at Graduation-the end of a very good year. 120 Seniors 2 .,...,x in I 1 an Sis ,- 'r F3 .1-M, 2 T' v iii 5 ' sir? ffl! We will have to make our way into the adult world and leave the child's world behind. The faculty has tried to prepare us to meet these challenges successfully. The seniors of 1968 will look back with nostalgia to their years at Southem. 121 JANET FAYE ALLAN, Ufayelc Commercialg Alh- letie Assoc. 1, 2, 3, 45 F.II.A. Pres. lg Student Coun- cil 2.
