PRlNClPAL'S MESSAGE Abraham Lincoln is credited with the statement that God must love the common people, he made so many of them . This simple and obvious observation is said to have drawn knowing smiles from the would-be Eastern intellectuals of that day who regarded Lincoln as a dull and boorish backwoodsman. It would be fair to state that these gentlemen underestimated the depth and complexity of perception that this backwood's dia- mond brought to bear upon the most simple and elemental subjects. It is true that our educational system needs to take a good look at its total program. Our present preoccupation with the pursuit of excellence is indeed a noble objective. It would be a pity to allow our unpolished diamonds to be plowed under by an unthinking machine directed by superficial intellectuality that is too dainty to dig its hands into the good, clean earth of every- day existence. 11
