Alumni return for Homecoming Festivities Practice meant aching feet, hot sun, and frayed tempers. Queen Sylvia sheds the traditional tears of joy. 96 After many days of preparation for the “‘big event,” we experienced one of the wettest Homecomings ever. Because of the Friday night rains, our Homecoming was postponed until the following Monday night with the dance being delayed until the next Friday night. The theme for this year’s event was “This Is My Country.” Many thanks are due Mrs. Loy, Mrs. Fox, and Mr. Rhodes, who graciously contributed their time and energy in organizing our Homecoming and helping make it successful.

Elected Homecoming Queen Sylvia Boggs, Janice Holt, Pat Isley and Camilla Jones were nominated by the football players to run for Home- coming Queen of 1969. After all the votes of the entire student body had been counted, Sylvia Boggs found the coveted title of 1969 Homecoming Queen bestowed upon her. Having cheered for four years, being Chief Cheerleader year, and being editor of the So-Hi News are some of Sylvia’s achievements while at Southern. My ld . wee sere: ‘tity ney sti habit eb to

Miss S.H.S. pageant began holiday season Brenda Bowers congratulates her successor. This year’s Miss Southern pagean t came to its climax with the crowning of Miss Camilla Jones as Miss Southern 1969. For her talent, Camilla presented a beautifully touching dramatic reading. Vickie Herndon was chosen first runner-up. She gave a lovely rendition of ‘Moon River” for her talent. The honor of being second runner-up went to Frankie McPherson, who performed an elaborate baton routine. Other contestants were Lucy Hill, Cathy Tinnin, Karen Shields, Jackie Bailey, Dona Isley, Libby Curtis, Betsy Shoffner, Addie Sessoms, Wanda McGhee, Chery! Hollar, Diane Neese, Janice Holt, Linda Cashwell, and Jane Cooper. Factors determining the judges’ selection were character traits, activities, poise, beauty, and talent, respectively. This year’s theme was ‘“Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” “And then she slopped her dripper.” Jackie turns the audience on with “Scotch n’ Soda.” 97
