el9Cll'fl'I'lel'lt A very important department for stu- dents who go directly to work after grad- uation isthe Vocational Department. Here young homemakers, future mechanics, future farmers, and promising architects receive basic training and guidance in their chosen fields. Students who have taken advantage of vocational courses gain valuable experience whether or not they receive further training. The boys, who are interested in car- pentry and construction take Shop I and II. With the aid of new and improved machinery such as electric saws and sanders, they are able to fashion such useful items as picnic tables, coffee tables, book shelves, tool panels. ln- dustrious racing fans have put together a few hot rods outside of class. Modern and decorative ash trays, vases, and book ends are turned out of the kiln during ceramics class. Boys who are planning to be farmers are enrolled in vocational agriculture. Both boys and girls may take mechan- ical drawing. As a rule, students inter- ested in engineering, architecture, and general construction work participate in this course. Extra work in blue print rv! Phillip Matthews draws his dream house in a mechanical drawing class. Ping pong can be fun, say P.E. girls. ai ' reading and house plans is offered to interested students. The home economics classes givenot only instruction and advice, but also practical experience under supervision. Modern homemakers of America exercise their talents on slant-o-matic sewing machines, electric mixers and other mod- ern appl iances. Units in food preservation, meal planning, child care, clothing and housing are only a few that are offered to housewives-to-be. ln advanced classes girls enjoy giving teas and dinner parties, and holding fashion shows and open house for visitors.
