A Southern l-ligh School grad- uate who has taken the commercial subjects finds himself capable of most office work. Typing I is the most popular ot the subjects. Because of its practical value in schoolwork and everyday writing, students enrolled in other courses take this as an elective. Typing ll continues the development of speed and accuracy. The classes perform dissections on worms, frogs, and fetal pigs. They goon fall and spring field trips to compare plants in different sea- sons. Films clarify difficult parts of the text- books and an aquarium puts theory into practice. cience elaarfmenf Freshmen taking general science become better ac- quainted with the scientific world which they discovered in grammar school. The teachers do experiments and demonstrations supplementing the textbook material. The individual students take textbook units as projects and make posters to simplify complicated material. Most college preparatory students take chemistry their iunior year. Seven periods a week are spent between textbook material and laboratory experiments. Prospective college students and engineers form the maiority ot those taking advantage ot our unique physics course. As in chemistry, there are seven hours each week. The 330,000 laboratory was the result of the time and ettort ot members ot the Durham Engineers Club who made equipment, and the 53,500 allotment from the Dur- ham County Board ot Education. This year's program included 25 experiments. The text used was written by Dr. Sherwood Githens, Jr. especially tor Southern High School. All sophomores are required to take biology. Jane Silver and Billy Rigsbee perform a physics experiment. Bruce Carpenter is explaining one of the fundamentals of science to Joyce Hobby and Jimmy Collins.
