Southern gals made the most of the opportunity and asked their favorite guys to the Twirp Dance. The theme was 'Little Abner, and the decorations were life-sized characters right out of Dogpatch: Marrin' Sam, Little Abner, Daisy Mae, Lonesome Polecat, Hairless Joe, and many other characters de- corated the walls. Southerners were married by Marrin' Sam, aptly por- trayed by Dick Fenton, and refresh- ments were no less than the famed Kickapoo Juice made by Hairless Joe and Lonesome Polecat. f 'ig One ofthe highlights of our year was the Valentine Dance. The theme of the dance was Queen ofHearts , and the decorations were gigantic playing cards and red, pink, and white valentines of all shapes and sizes. Rebels danced to popular music that had been previously taped. The evening was climaxed with the crowning of the Queen Benny Elliott. he

l'0I'l'l All ioin hands and circle left, Do-si-do, Swing that pretty little girl and Promenade home were some of the calls at the l-larvest Dance. The theme was an old- fashioned square dance, and the lobb was decorated with pumpkins, corn stalks, and autumn Keaves suspended from the ceiling. Gals and guys promenaded to the music ot Dwight Moody and the Smoky Mountain Boys. The dance, which was sponsored by the Senior Class, was a success according to the many red-faced and laughing participants. Oh, my aching feet, was the moan at one of Southern's sock-hops, which was held in the lobby this year. Following the home football games, the News- paper staff sponsored sock-hops in the lobby for Rebs and the visiting teams. FRESHMAN-SOPHOMORE ln the spring a young man's fancy... Such was the atmosphere of the Freshman- Sophomore Prom. The dance was climaxed by a shower of flower petals which fluttered down on the dancers. The balloons which were burst, hung from the center of the ceiling filled with snowball petals. Pastel swags of crepe paper, draped from light to light, com- pleted the decorations. The dance was semi- formal, and the Sophomore: were admitted free.

Jo Carolyn Mann and Mr. Sam Syme, sponsor, do some last minute sweeping. The big night! South- erners, dressed to the hilt, watch the dancers while they take a breather. Southerners danced unc the stars to the tune of Ru Olsen and his orchestra at t Junior-Senior Prom. The ther was SOUTH PACIFIC, and C corations included palm tree Spanish moss, and colored ligh The committee chairmen we Anna l-lagy, invitations, Carolj Randall, entertainment, Phyll Snipes, refreshments, Dona l-laith, Junior Class Presiden Barbara McCoy, card tables, Faf Shephard, card tables, Doi Fagg, publicity, Doris Petre decorations, and Brenda McGe Junior Class Treasurer.
