Maid of Honor, Judy Custer, smiles for the camera 12 This year’s Homecoming Queen was Judy Custer. Judy was a G.A.A. member and the decoration chairman for Homecoming. The day of the dance Judy had to take her SAT test and could not supervise over the decorating. She did not know if the decorations would turn out as planned so naturally her nerves were shot. Judy felt that being Homecoming Queen was an honor and any GAA member would be excited over the title. The week preceding Homecoming was filled with various events, some of which were crazy sock and hat day, lick-em day, red and white day, a scavenger hunt, and a bonfire. The winners of the scavenger [ie ae ¢ hunt were given a free pass to the game on Friday night. The pep assembly Friday afternoon included a pom-pom routine performed by Senior High Majorettes and varsity cheerleaders. There were various chants and cheers and many selections played by the Senior band. The cheerleaders also played a stunt on six of the football players who were blindfolded and unknowingly kissed by their mothers. Friday night was the Homecoming game. The Southern Rams were defeated by the Northern Husk- ies, twelve to zero. All in all the events of the week made Homecoming 1976 a memorial event. 1. It took a great deal of work to make this play a success but by the reception of the public, “Har- vey” indeed was successful. Rehearsals were long and tedious but not without humorous things happening. Rodney McMillen wore a dress to one practice. Jaime Alvarez came out, in one scene, in a sheet instead of a bathrobe. A pot of flowers with water in it was to be poured over Scott Heginbotham’s head but needless to say Scott drank the water. A few accidents happened too. Bill Ashby smashed his hand between the wall flats. Rodney McMillen broke his foot when Jennilee Stemple fell on him!! Set changes were a riot. The first time the cast and crew changed the scene it took four minutes. This had to be cut down to one minute resulting in total chaos, millions of bruises and a few broken flats. The play was a great success thanks to the excel- lent direction of Jane B. Avery assisted by student directors Lesa Whitehair and Debbie Herndon. siete CCE OS ON 1. “He couldn’t come out here with an ordinary case of D.T.’s. The football team, with a 1-9 record, had a young team but showed a great outlook for next year's team. Basketball season was a great excitement this year. Missing their chance at College Park by one point, they ended their season with a 17-8 record. The wrestling squad showed their ability by pinning a 3-7 record. The girls in sports winded up the year, not with a victorious record but, instead, one that showed willpower and determination. The girls basketball team shot to a 4-7 record as the girls volleyball team struggled to a 1-11 record. Spring brought spirit and victories as the baseball team swung their way to a winning season as they hit a 9-5 record. Golf, as Southerns most continuous winning sport, led themselves to a 26-O record, giving them an overall record of 105-1. The Ram team ended with a 2-7 record in which they lost most games by less than six points. This year’s team had a few talented seniors. Rodney Bowers was selected to the Tri-Valley Conference while Eric Cvetnick received the Golden Helmet Award for being the most outstanding player. Rams fought to a 5-4 season under the direction of Coach Dave Bosley. After losing the first two games, the Rams came back to win the next four. In the final game of the season, Southern revenged their earlier loss to Valley with a 16-6 victory. The offense was quarterbacked by Delbert Liller and powered by the exceptional per- formance of running backs Dave Browning and John Toston. The presence of the J.V. Cheerleaders and enthusiastic crowds of parents and students was a welcome support for the Rams. There was always someone there to back up the coach and his team. The defense was good but it could have been better. The Rams had a lot of trouble protecting against the pass. Coach Don Stemple had this to say about the team. “T think considering we had only two play- ers with experience returning from our 76 College Park Team, our 17-8 record was very respectable. Coach Woy’s continual coaching efforts paid off in the teams last five games of which four were victori- ous. Few of the team’s losses were by as much as 15 pts., and many were by a narrow margin of 2 or less pts. The Jr. Rams achieved a total of pts. through- out the season. Mrs. Helen Rostosky instructs Bonnie Early and Lois Filemyr on how to execute a lay-up Everyone worked hard this year, even coming to practices during our January “vacation.” Fighting through snowdrifts, and coming home from games when the wind was blowing so hard we hoped the bus driver could see the road. It was quite a year to remember. Three seniors will probably remember it forever. They are the Tri-Captains, who have been playing since the beginning of Girls Basketball here at Southern. The biggest event this year was beating the Northern girls by “1” point. 81 82 A new sport came alive for girls at South- ern. Volleyball looks easy but is very difficult to play. The Rams put all their might into the sea- son. For a first year job, Mrs. Helen Rostosky had her hands full. The team had some defeats but still played as a team and worked hard. Although injured fingers and twisted feet slowed them down, they got the Ram spirit together and defeated Oldtown. Their spiking and working as a team pulled together as the season progressed. Starting out with football season where mothers of the football players helped out in a pep assembly by coming in and kissing their blindfolded son in front of the school. Then moving to basketball season where Larry San- ders highlighted most pep assemblies by giv- ing a speech or eating pies that were hand made by Ken Niner. Finally moving to Wres- tling Cheerleaders sparked their team to one of the best seasons ever. When not decorating the halls, making victory hoops, or painting signs, one of these 26 cheerleaders could always be found run- ning the halls trying to sell some kid a light switch plate, jewelry, chances, or a lollipop. For the 3 senior squad members, 76-77 left many memories, but for the remaining 23 members it was another happy year to add to many more that are being dreamed about and will soon come true. 91 at Varsity Cheerleaders 1976-1977 92 + | = 4 a AOL le i: ope sal 1. The excitement of buying gowns and picking up flowers are over. The special event was held at the Wisp. Kim Kurilla is happy to be moving on. Everyone is there, dressed in their red and white caps and gowns. They are the same people who have always been there. Is this the last time you will see them? Maybe, but you will always have fond memories of the years together and all the good times. Some may wish to move on while others wish to remain, but the time has come and there is lit- tle choice for anyone. The future must now shape and be shaped by the Class of “77.” Hopefully they will never forget the years, friends, and times in Southern High School. 9 Two Restaurants — Two Personalities THE FOUR SEASONS AT WILL O' THE WISP elegant dining room overlooking Deep Creek Lake, continental cuisine emphasizing seasonally and regionally fresh foods. . . for those special occasions calling for the best! you know? We gave the seniors a prom and presented a terrific play. Something new was included in each day. We're looking forward to tomorrow with excitement mixed with fear. This year the teachers were faced with many unigue situations. It was a big adjustment to get used to teaching strictly senior high classes. After Christmas, when the staff had just gotten used to the changes, they were faced with another dilema. Due to inclement weather, it was the responsibility of the professional staff to see that the students were prepared to go on to their next grade level. This forced the staff to put in many extra hours of planning. Barough they were often the butt of criticism, through the help of their administration, the teachers were able to achieve their final goal. 171 The 1976-77 school year has been both interesting and unusual. This has been our first year as strictly a Senior High School and the much needed relief atforded by the opening of Southern Middle School has been an improvement. Such facts as changing classes in one shift instead of two, five hundred fewer students using the cafeteria, the elimination of several hundred high pitched immature juvenile voices, and the some- what more mature and deliberate movement of older students in the hall, have made a noticeable improve- ment of the general character of the school. As a school we are a reflection of our whole commu- nity. There are many individuals within our student body who are outstanding examples of all the higher goals we have for all young people. But as our larger community has room for improvement so we, as a school, also can improve. With the cooperation of the student body and your parents, we can see as much improvement in 1977-78 as I teel we have realized this year. Luther D.
