Dave Evans, Drum Major . the Southern Highlander Marching Band traveled. Denes from the school November 27 at 7:00 a.m., they started their eight hour journey to New York City. Arriving in New York at approximately 3:15 p.m., the band toured the United Nations Building. Tired from the long trip and interesting tour, they retired to the Taft Hotel for a few hours rest before rise ’n’ shine at 3:00 a.m. for practice. After the excitement and exhaustion from a job excel- lently done, the band once again returned to the hotel to start an evening of various tours. On Friday morning the band visited Radio City Music Hall to see a film of the Little Prince followed by Elves and Bells, a fascinating Christmas show. The group then split into smaller groups either going on shopping sprees or tours. That evening was spent by going to a movie or resting. Saturday morning began an eight hour guided tour which included the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Rockefeller Center, and a few cathedrals. Returning to the hotel about 5:00 p.m., the band again split into smaller groups to have an evening of free time, which included shopping in a flea market, going to Howard Johnson’s for ice cream, or seeing a movie. Sunday morning the band was forced to leave an hour early because of the heavy snow warnings in Garrett County. Arriving in Cumberland around 11:00 p.m., the band discovered they could go no further because of the snow. They were to stay in the Holiday Inn but soon found that their reservations had not been confirmed and other people also stranded had taken the rooms. The Salvation Army soon came to the rescue taking the band to their facilities. The following morning coffee and donuts were served. Waiting in suspense, the band was soon happy to dis- cover that Allegeny County school buses would take them home. The band finally returned to Garrett County about 2:00 p.m. Monday afternoon. A trip completely fulfilled with excitement and won- der came to an end. o pueg suiyosey Japuejysiy usayynog i Bk ee ae Sao rea nll, 5 (NVa DNIHOUVN 3%) YaGNVIHDIH bis) 16 17 op) Sp) © © = | % -g 5 | | 2c g pe ee SP ) Wy a 3 © ] : 3 = a] = | ss) hed Ss = DY | W= Ao) ae = c SY | 18 my = A FMR E | f he, ee ip og 2 ge HIGH SCHOOL. Door decorations, crazy socks and hat day, a pep assembly, a bonfire, a great football game, and the homecoming dance were among the activities. The Southern Rams showed one of the best performances this year. At halftime, tensions were high not only for football players but also for the spectators and the five girls of which one was to be selected queen. The Southern Highlander Band per- formed to make it all that much better. The final cheers were given as the Rams beat the Huskies by the score of 22-14. The Homecoming dance was held on Sat- urday, October 19. The Pork Brothers were hired at the last minute to play at the dance where the queen and king were crowed by Mr. James Miers, head football coach. Several awards were presented to those seniors that had shown outstanding abilities and talents during their six years at South- ern. Among those were Dave Evans who received the Profane Language Award for his favorite use of the word CRAP. Rick Skeweris recived the Skipper of the Year award for his outstanding record of being absent illegally the most times. Marty O’Brien received the Barbara Streisand award for being the most faith- ful fan in the senior class. The Golden Tray award went to Nevin Maffett who ate 730 double lunches to win this honor. The theme for the prom was Color My World. Dinner was served at the McHenry House at the Wisp at 7:00 and the dance followed at 9:00. Entertainment was provided by Sound Affair. Mr. Wilbur Hinebaugh, his assistant, kept the Rams in shape to come back and win the tight games. The summer practices were ones to remember, from throwing little brothers in the pond to the Junior- Senior game. This year the Juniors challenged the Seniors to a game to see who was the better of the two. It was a good battle, but the sen- iors had more momentum to win the game 12 to 8. The first few games showed the Rams in good shape until injuries slowed them down. Lack of experi- ence, new ideas, injuries, and costly errors seemed to push the Rams from having a great team to a losing sea- son. Tom Mattingly was the only player to receive Potomac Valley Confer- ence honors. Ed Wolfe and Kevin Liller were named to the first team Tri-Valley Conference. Jim Liven- good, Eric Wotring, Ted Raynovich, and John Rodeheaver were awarded honorable mentions in the TVC. Top: Coach Knuckles (Miss Jane Avery) being interviewed by Ralph the Mouth and Fonzy. Cagers Bucket 15-7 Season The chorus to Jesus Christ Superstar, changed more appropriately to Southern Rams Superstars, exploded in the gym as the team appeared on the floor. Enthusiasm filled the hearts of everyone during one of the most exciting and memorable seasons ever. The 1974-75 basketball season — we hated to see it end! We went bananas over this year’s team. They compiled a 15-7 record while playing the tough- est schedule in Southern history, finished with the 7th best record of 27 area schools, and were rated by the Cumberland Times as the 4th best team in the area. Although the team was bitterly disappointed by the blockade thrown them by Allegany on the road to Col- lege Park, they were consoled by such super-victories as Fort Hill, Bishop Walsh, and Bruce along with the Gar- rett County Championship. As a team, there were many moments they will never forget. Defeating Bruce, who proved to be the 4th best C school in the state, was one of the highlights for the team. Moral and stamina were always high especially before the tougher games. Blowing Bishop Walsh off the floor proved this. The night Fort Hill came to town the team was ready and waiting. The RAms exploded in the 4th and sent the Sentinels home with a big loss. However, in spite of team status, we had several outstanding wrestlers in terms of their individual perform- ance. Bob Wolf finished his freshman season with a respectable 7-4 record. Tim Rush, a super sophomore, advanced to the District I Tourna- ments at Frederick. Ken Stinson, another super sopho- more, concluded his season with a 6- 4 mark and almost made it to Dis- tricts. Our third super sophomore, Mike Friend, won both of his matches against Northern in the 155 pound weight class. Merle Weeks, one of the winning wrestlers against Northern, ended up with a 5-3-3 record. Steve Filemyr, team captain, placed third in the Bi-County Tour- nament and advanced to the District ] Tournament held at Frederick. Not to be forgotten are the follow- ing wrestlers who will probably be the standouts next year: Bill Herring, Jay Sowers, Tim Skipper, Terry Steyer, Perry Clark, Tim Friend, Denny Murray, John Rodeheaver, Jeff Sines, James Clark, and David Gallagher. Managers this year were Ted Wolf, John Hayhurst, John Toston, and Dave Browning. These young men will be the varsity standouts of the future. AThe bench looking on, hoping for a win. They keep the equipment together and make sure the mats are clean before and after the matches and then put the mats away. They give medical help to the injured wrestlers. Most of all they give the food that is eaten before the matches, such as oranges, honey, chocolate bars, and the salt pills. The managers also wrestled in the JV matches. A few brought real bananas and waved them in the air while cardboard ones decorated the walls. Just about everywhere you looked in the gym you saw bananas! Basketball team did not have its best year ever, but during the tourna- ment they showed willingness and determination to win, bringing Southern High a third place trophy. Their season was a big letdown. The first two games were lost by one point. It seemed in the third period of each game they could not get any thing going. At the beginning of the seaosn, their biggest player quit and the team was hurt. Another liability was the lack of experience due to the first year men. Injuries also hurt the team. During practice, Mike Colaw fell and broke his wrist and was out almost the whole sea- son. Without him, they were hurting for someone to bring the ball downcourt. Through the year the team and bench showed a lot of enthusiasm which led the Rams to third place in the Hamp- shire tourney. Fred Friffith, captain, was elected to be on the all tour- ney team. He also led the team in scoring, having a total of 203 points, averaging eleven per game. The team thought Coach Gary Newcomb did an out- standing job this year. Coaching Took a Different Turn this year as both varsity and the Junior High Rams came under new leadership. Mr. David Bos- ley led the Junior Rams, directing them to a 2-5 season. Taking the first game by a score of 16 to 6 over Petersburg, the Junior Rams then suffered numerous injuries the following games which probably turned them on the losing trail. Thus, the lack of health along with a few inex- perienced players played a key role, combining this with the close scores of 8 to O for Bruce and 6 to 2 against Northern. The players expressed great satisfaction in the directing of their new coach as he tried to find the best players in one of the smallest Little Ram teams in the school’s history. At practice, Pam Terrant led the ankle exercises. It just so happened that she also led the string of ankle injuries. Pam was the first to fall into the hands of the enemy with a sprained ankle. Donna Moore, not wanting to be showed up, broke hers. Todd Tich- nell had to quit because of shin splints. Charlene Shaf- fer had to tape her ankles because of sprains. So you see this was a good year for the legs of the team. Also on the team was sure shot Ace with her forty feet bomb. Deb Smith missed a few weeks but all she needed was to warm up. Mary Crumley and Pam Trickett were two of the new players on the team who showed up great. Spirit and enthusiasm were high and all tenth grade players worked hard and showed much improve- ment. This gives much hope for a better season next year. The team tried hard and made progress but this was not enough. Donna Moore (43) keeps her eye on the ball.
