Even with sixteen returning lettermen, the Rams lost their first three games against Kingwood, Valley and Beall. The Rams’ next three games saw a change, though, as Southern crushed through Mountaineer, Parsons, and Terra Alta. Then South- ern fell before Bruce only to rise again and smash Petersburg. With a 4-4 record, Southern prepared to face Northern for the Garrett County Champion- ship. Southern’s sixteen seniors fought hard to win their last game but that cold fall night yielded a 14-14 deadlock, thus evening Southern’s season 4-4-1. oar ae : ; 3 ie. Three of our wrestlers, Scott Rush (10-0), Brad Reams (10-0), and Carol Deems (7-0-3) finished the season with unblemished records. The schools that fell victim to the skilled matmen included Kingwood, Bruce, Petersburg, Northern, Romney, and Allegheny. Southern also attended the Bi-County Tourney at Bruce High School, placing four wrestlers, Scott Rush, Brad Reams, Gary Friend, and Ralph Fitzwater, eligible to compete in the District Tourney at Allegheny High School. From there, Brad Reams traveled to the State Tour- nament. At the wrestling banquet held on April 22, Brad Reams was awarded the Outstanding Wrestler Trophy for his achievements. Rams conclude best season in history The Southern Rams’ 1969-70 basketball season was packed with excitement from the beginning un- til the last game. Capacity crowds filled Southern’s gym to watch our team sail through five consecutive wins before bowing to Bishop Walsh. Mr. Kuhn’s varsity team finished the season with the best record in the school’s history with seventeen wins and only five losses. Enthusiasm was high as spectators, along with the Spirit Squad, cheered our varsity players to victory after victory. A tired, but happy Ruffy Ridder was hoisted atop Spirit Squad members’ shoulders after ‘a victorious and hard-fought game with the Valley Knights. Southern added two new schools to our schedule as we challenged Bishop Walsh of Cumberland and North Dorchester of Hurlock in Dorchester County on the Eastern Shore. The tenth annual Homecoming of Southern High School got underway Thursday night, October 23, with a bonfire in the community parking lot. High- lighting the evening was the announcement of Pam Frantz and Joe Ashby as King and Queen by Mr. Frost, football coach. On Friday afternoon a pep assembly was held to encourage and raise school spirit. It paid off that night at the game when the Southern Rams walked all over the Petersburg Vikings with a score of 28-0. Prior to the game was the annual parade. South- ern’s Junior and Senior Bands participated along with several floats. The F.N.A.’s float won first prize for originality. The play began as a college professor, his family, friends, and servant moved into a deserted prison. Professor Rockby (Bill Buchanon) needed “atmos- phere” for the book he wanted to write. Strange things began to happen when Marcel (Marilyn Niner) became obsessed with the thought that she really wasn’t herself. Matters became more complicated when the maid, Mrs. Simpson (Sandy Beeghly), saw a Ghost (Wayne Dunbar). The only person that believed her was Bridget (Jessica Web- ster), twelve year daughter of the Professor. Before long, Marcel disappeared after Gennie (Karen Crone) left her in the Tower room. Plenty of laughs were had because of Knuckle- head’s (Kim Frederick) antics when trying to find Marcel. It was noticed that Marcel looked like the lost daughter of George Albright, last man hanged in the Tower. With the capture of the Ghost and the return of Marcel, a twenty year old mystery was solved. Top left: Mrs. Simpson (Sandy Beeghly) and Bridget (Jes- sica Webster) try to stay awake as Knucklehead (Kim Frederick) mumbles something. The setting was a bookshop owned by Mable Crane and Sylvia Lee. A newsreporter, Grant Terry, received a tip that someone in the Boule- vard Hotel was to be murdered. Terry tried to solve the plot. The mystery began when it was learned that the name of the person who was to be murdered was contained in an article in the shop. After it was discovered that a murder was to occur. the entire cast felt that he was the victim. It all turned out that J. T. Rutledge was the intended person. The muderer was unknown at first. All the facts led to Sam Fisk who had been hired to do away with Rutledge. Fisk was captured and given a workover by Marcella Bender, a female wrestler. The play was an outstanding success and entertained all who attended. Top: Eddie Beach (Terry King) and Sam Fisk (Bob Ridder) engage in a pleasant activity. Bottom Left: J. T. After Homer Dunhagen’s family and friends objected’ to the way he ran Brookfield High, he decided to retire as principal. Buzzy and Leroy took his place. Little did they realize the problems they would have to face. Rosemary wanted to be Homecoming Queen, Phyllis wanted dances during school, Rash wanted to play basketball, Diane wanted to be Head Cheerleader, Mrs. Burton wanted “better” subjects for her daughter Jenny, and Mr. MacDonald, head of the School Board, was angry at Homer. Leroy and Buzzy soon appealed to Homer for help. After the situation worsened, Homer reclaimed his position as principal. Relieved of their duty, Leroy and Buzzy breathed a sigh of relief.
