Mr. Johns | While each succeeding generation since recorded history has been beset with many prob- lems, none have been faced with the problems of technology as you are facing now. Technolog- ical innovations and discoveries have created new industries and products and have profoundly ltered our nations economy. We have changed from a society which in 1900 was predominately rural to what is now overwhelmingly urban. When you consider that some 90 per cent of the research scientists who have ever lived are still alive today, and that about half the research and development money spent in the history of the United States has been spent in the last eight — years, you can be sure that this technological revolution is by no means at an end. Putting it still anoth er way. In 1900 a young man entering the labor market could probably © count upon the skill he had learned or was about to learn as an apprentice for his livelihood dur- ing his entire working life. Some seventy per cent of the skilled trades in American manufact- uring in the year 1900 do not exist now. Today, with the rapid rate of innovation, the skill learned as a youth may be obsolete and inusable within ten or fifteen years. There is no need for you to be frightened by such prospects, provided that the quality of our education keeps pace with the advance of technology. Man is the most adaptable of all be- ings. He is born unspecialized. His brain and his hand can be turned to an infinity of different tasks. But this adaptability soon withers and dies unless it is nournished by ies ay a This means that you must be able to understand what you read; think for your lf and ex- press your thoughts clearly; handle the basic tools of mathematics in their application to your daily life; grasp some of the realities of your natural and human environment. If you have learned these things well, you will have learned how to learn. Such an education is a master . key that opens many doors. Not everybody can be a genius, but if in your own mind, you have done your best and will : continue to do your best throughout life, your problem of meeting this galloping eS Bene age of yours, will be greatly simplified. Iam confident that you have the best wishes for success and happiness in ite years peat from all persons who have known you and of just one little spark from one of your teachers, whether it was in the elementary school or secondary school has been ignited, may be tor glow brighten each day.
