Dean, Supervisor of Pupil Personnel Mr. Johns | While each succeeding generation since recorded history has been beset with many prob- lems, none have been faced with the problems of technology as you are facing now. Technolog- ical innovations and discoveries have created new industries and products and have profoundly ltered our nations economy. We have changed from a society which in 1900 was predominately rural to what is now overwhelmingly urban. When you consider that some 90 per cent of the research scientists who have ever lived are still alive today, and that about half the research and development money spent in the history of the United States has been spent in the last eight — years, you can be sure that this technological revolution is by no means at an end. Putting it still anoth er way. In 1900 a young man entering the labor market could probably © count upon the skill he had learned or was about to learn as an apprentice for his livelihood dur- ing his entire working life. Some seventy per cent of the skilled trades in American manufact- uring in the year 1900 do not exist now. Today, with the rapid rate of innovation, the skill learned as a youth may be obsolete and inusable within ten or fifteen years. There is no need for you to be frightened by such prospects, provided that the quality of our education keeps pace with the advance of technology. Man is the most adaptable of all be- ings. He is born unspecialized. His brain and his hand can be turned to an infinity of different tasks. But this adaptability soon withers and dies unless it is nournished by ies ay a This means that you must be able to understand what you read; think for your lf and ex- press your thoughts clearly; handle the basic tools of mathematics in their application to your daily life; grasp some of the realities of your natural and human environment. If you have learned these things well, you will have learned how to learn. Such an education is a master . key that opens many doors. Not everybody can be a genius, but if in your own mind, you have done your best and will : continue to do your best throughout life, your problem of meeting this galloping eS Bene age of yours, will be greatly simplified. Iam confident that you have the best wishes for success and happiness in ite years peat from all persons who have known you and of just one little spark from one of your teachers, whether it was in the elementary school or secondary school has been ignited, may be tor glow brighten each day. Vice President — Linda Shaffer. ........Secretary — Linda Bray .....s4¢5 . (eGaguper OUR LIFE Our life at Southern began in 1959 as we entered the 7th grade with anticipation and appre- - hension. We elected Nancy Glotfelty as our President, David Sisler-Vice President, Linda Oursler-Secretary, and Deanna Fike as our Treasurer. We returned the next year with less apprehension than with the previous one. As Eighth graders we traveled to Ft. Necessity. It proved to be a very enjoyable and educational excurs- ion. We chose Bob Lohr as President, Judy Kildow-Vice President, Sandra Jordon-Secretary, and Deanna Fike-Treasurer, to lead us through our second year at Southern High School. We entered the ninth grade as ''Freshmen , which sounded pretty good. This year oun duties were carried out by Linda Oursler- President, Cathy Lewis-Vice President, Linda — Shaffer-Secretary, and Deanna Fike as our Treasurer. As sophomores, we finally became 'senior high students. We elected Linda Oursler-— President, Nancy Kitzmiller-Vice President, Linda Shaffer-Secretary, and Linda Bray- Treasurer. — Next to our Senior year, our junior year was our most memorable one. One of the main events was the ordering of our class rings. Our class play, ‘Her Emergency Husband , proved — to be a sucessful event. The Climax of our junior year was the Jr.-Sr. Prom, ''Moonlight and Roses , the result of eight months of hard work and fun. We elected Nancy Kitzmiller- Presi dent, Ron Hansen- Vice President, Linda Shaffer-Secretary, and Linda Bray-Treasurer, to lead _ oe us in the planning of these events. Kathy Campbell served as Secretary of the Student Council. Again, as when our life at Southern began, we came with anticipation.and apprehension. We looked forward, with anticipation to our senior year and perhaps apprehension for our future. For the first time in the history of Southern a write- in candidate was elected President. Bob Mcintyre, our chosen candidate, servedas President, Nancy Kitzmiller as Vice President, Linda Shaffer as Secretary, and Linda Bray as Treasurer. Smokey Stanton served as President of the. Student Council. Elaine Ridder and Debbie Kern filled the office of Treasurer. We would like, to acknowledge Kathy Campbell, who has served us in the Student Council diligently for si years. Also, Donna Shaffer served as editor of the Highlander for her second year. . Our class play, ''There She Goes , was our first successful event of the year..The class _ participated in the usual senior events. As a parting note, we would like to thank the faculty and administration for their help and eS guidance throughout our life at Southern. ; : Linda Shaffer Senior Class Secretary STUDENT COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES Linda Ousler Kathy Campbell Cathy Lewis At the sound of the 8:30 bell, Student Council members head towards the Student Center to begin their role as ''middle-man between the students and faculty. Smokey Stanton calls for order in hopes that an important matter can be settled. Reaching their goal after much debate the group divides into their assigned committees to prepare for their jobs. Asthe first period bell sounds, the group adjourns until the following morning. CLASS OF’ 65 CAROL ANN BARKMAN Stenographic, F. H.
