This is Play School, sponsored by the Home Ec. girls, for children ages 3 to 5. ADMINISTRATION Mr. Willard Hawkins has been superintendent of Garrett County Schools for ten years. Prior to coming to our county, he had served as prin- cipal of Bel Air and Cambridge High Schools. He has been President of the Maryland Associa- tion of Secondary School Principals and Pre- sident of Maryland School Superintendent Asso- ciation. His honorsincludea John Hay's Fellow- ship to Colorado College and a special scholar- ship te Harvard College. Just this past year, he was one of seventy-nineschool administrators chosen throughout the United States to participate in a six week tour and study of the Swedish school system. Mr. Albert Ringer received his A. B. Degree from Fairmont State Teachers College and his Masters Degree from West Virginia University. He came to Southern in 1955 after teaching a short time in North- ern High School. He studied Russian and German in the United States Army Language School in California. Mr. Ringer took the position as Director of Instruction of the Garrett County School in the fall of 1960. To those of you who will be receiving diplomas, our professional staff extends their sincere congratulations. This represents a reward for long effort, and will prove of real value in the future. Never before wasa sound education more highly rated and never wasa solid background more essential to future success, While stepping out into life's greater opportunities with diplomas, you must re- member that you are just commencing. What has transpired to this point is more or less training. The possibilities which lie ahead for each of you are almost unlimited. In a world in which distance has lost its significance and space has become a link instead of a barrier, in which political, economic, and social problems transcend national boundaries, national sov- ereignty has lost some of its relevance. Our world is in a time of transition. The old order is Changing. Long established traditions are giving away to new ideas. Dramatic advance in med- icine, reducing infant mortality and extending the life span have brought about revolutionary changes inour personal lives. Automation and technology have improved our way of life. There has been a great explosion of knowledge. Yet with this vast store of knowledge opening wider day by day, there are many _implications and problems which we have not had to cope in years gone by. Perhaps the greatest threat to us as a result of successive breakthrough in science and technology is our apparent concern for material benefits. Let usnot forget that while science and technology, when properly used, can be the greatest blessing that mankind has ever known, but improperly used, these ‘advances can destroy us. Thus, there isa greater need today for young men and women of honesty, sincerity, goodwill and absolute integrity to maintain an equilibrium in a world where all too often false standards and false values are the order of the day. Let us not fall into the error of taking it for granted that better material standards automatically make people, because unfortunately, they do not. We must again, relearn and reaffirm the lesson that men shall not live by bread alone, . Let us also remember that there can be dignity in all occupations, whether they are professional, skilled, semi-skilled or general labor. Let us never reach the point where the character of the individual is determined by socio-economic factors. Respect each individual for what he is as a person and not his position on the social or economic ladder of life. A wise philosopher once said, ''Without dew and light flowers fade. Charity and love are the dew and light of the human heart. She nourished us with hope, happiness... . Some- times tears. She encourages us to cling to those distant dreams, which have, at times, seemed so elusive. She always understood as we stumbled along the way. Southern... . Urging, ever urging, us on toward the crest of adulthood. We aretraveling forward now, and new doors are opened to us. We have had many new and different experiences at Southern--some good--some frightening. We have participated in many class and extracurricular ac- tivities. In the 7th grade we were very frightened of the thought of being part of such a large school. As 8th graders we became used to the long corridorsand ever-ringing bells. We were led from freshmen to sophomores--our first step inhigh school. We were feeling like old pro's then! As juniors we took another big step, we attended our first prom, receivedour class rings, and moved closer to adult- hood. . Our final stepcameas senio rs. Weparticipatedin all the usual events and worried about making passing grades. Then came the final step--graduation--and our departure from Southern. 38 Student Council Representatives L-R: Charles Teets, Cathy Lewis, Bob McIntyre. foUr sUniOL Year vu co A year to be remembered always. The symbols of inevitable citizenship were received--our class rings. Our ability of organization, leadership, and presentation were evident inthe prom. The realization of becoming seniors and wonder; yet hope and enthusiasm will lead us on toward our goal of everlasting success and eternal happiness. 11th Grade Class Officers L-R: Sec.- Linda Shaffer; Vice-Pres.- Nancy Kitzmiller; Pres.-Richard Hauser; Treas.-Sandra Reall. We receive offers to join various clubs. The Home- coming Dance is the first mainactivity we as sophomores are invited to attend. This year we become an active part of Senior High School life. We are given an opportunity to take part in every Senior High activity available. We are striving to the top, for we are now earnestly inaugurating ideas for our future. Two more steps and our stair steps of high aChoot will be completed with a resplendent future awaiting. CLASS OFFICERS Pres... .. Jonn Durst Vice Pres. .Robert Martin Sec. ..... This was our first impression as we entered Southern for the first time. As we walked through the doors of learning into the world of op- portunity, we suddenly realized just how insignificant we were as the masses of people nearly overwhelmed us. However, our eagerness to learn in this new environment and our desire to make our future a reality spurred us on. As we near the end of the year, again we have a feeling of anticipa- tion and anxiety, but now it is for the future and the five years ahead of us in which we will undergo a complete change. Itis with great hopes and aspirationsthat we lookintothefuture.... our future at Southern. They are stopped on their way at four points by members re- presenting the obstacles: Ignorance, Waste, Indolence, and Isolation. When the candidates go back through these stations Ignorance is replaced by Wisdom, Waste by Thrift, Indolence by Labor, and Isolation by Cooperation. Arriving again at the President's station, they are welcomed as Green Hands, the first stage in being a member of the F.F.A. I believe inthe future of farming, with a faith born not of words but of deeds I believe that to live and work ona good farm is pleasant as well as challenging I believe in leadership from ourselves and respect from others. I believe in less dependence on begging and more power in bargaining. I believe that rural America can and will hold true to the best traditions in our national life ... The Owl is the symbol of wisdom and knowledge. The plow is the symbol of labor and tillage of the soil. The rising sun is emblematic of progress and the new day that will dawn when all farmers are trained and have learned to cooperate.
