Good Morning boys and girls. MayIhave your attention for the following announce- menis7., 2... Thus begins the typically full agenda of the high school principal. He maybe called upon to give advice and to plan and schedule student activities while coordi- nating them with community interests. In so doing, he is fulfilling his obligations to act as liaison between the school and the community. The phone begins its insistent demands, sum- moning him to conference with parents, citizen groups, or a representative of the office of the superintendent of schools. The principal's round of duties may be interrupted at any time to administer disci- pline, or to confer with a member of the faculty. Mail must be read and answered. He must put his seal of approval upon all requi- sitions and sign all checks. He is also ex- pected to be present and support all the evening activities. Besides the daily routine, the responsi- bility of the entire school must be constantly in his thoughts. Staff meetings must be planned, and memoranda issued to keep the staff informed of schedules, activities, or changes in policy. One important role of the principal is the selection of new staff mem- bers. Another is the direction and preparation ofthe master schedule of classes. He is also responsible for a satisfactory lunch program. He must make provisions for fire and bus drills, for traffic control, and for inspection of plant facilities to see that all is running safely and smoothly. A relatively minor detail is that of pre- paring accurate reports concerning the con- dition and progress of the school. Of a more demanding nature is the job of promoting the best educational program possible for the stu- dents. He is also responsible for seeing that staff members understand and execute their duties, and for assisting them if necessary. All these responsibilities rest capably in the hands of Mr. Kenneth Johns who has served as principal of Southern Garrett County Jr. Sr. High School for the past eight years. Pre- vious to his move to this county he was a teacher in Bel Air, Maryland, for five years. He has both his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Denver, and Columbia Uni- versity respectively. He has also done grad- uate work at the Universities of Colorado, Maryland, Wisconsin and West Virginia. He is an active member of community organi- zations. : Mr. Johns is noted for his fairness and justice to students and parents alike. The heart of his program has always been the needs of the students of Southern High School.
