BPOTLIGHT ON SOUTHERN 1963 HIGHLANDER VOLUME XI SOUTHERN GARRETT COUNTY ) JR.-SR. HIGH SCHOOL OAKLAND, MARYLAND 8 A . we a a Ce TABLE OF CONTENTS FRONTICE ADMINISTRATION DIVISION STUDENT DIVISION ATHLETICS DIVISION ACTIVITIES DIVISION ADVERTISING DIVISION 69 05 SPOTLIGHT ON ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY Good Morning boys and girls. MayIhave your attention for the following announce- menis7., 2... Thus begins the typically full agenda of the high school principal. He maybe called upon to give advice and to plan and schedule student activities while coordi- nating them with community interests. In so doing, he is fulfilling his obligations to act as liaison between the school and the community. The phone begins its insistent demands, sum- moning him to conference with parents, citizen groups, or a representative of the office of the superintendent of schools. The principal's round of duties may be interrupted at any time to administer disci- pline, or to confer with a member of the faculty. Mail must be read and answered. He must put his seal of approval upon all requi- sitions and sign all checks. He is also ex- pected to be present and support all the evening activities. Besides the daily routine, the responsi- bility of the entire school must be constantly in his thoughts. Staff meetings must be planned, and memoranda issued to keep the staff informed of schedules, activities, or changes in policy. One important role of the principal is the selection of new staff mem- bers. Another is the direction and preparation ofthe master schedule of classes. He is also responsible for a satisfactory lunch program. He must make provisions for fire and bus drills, for traffic control, and for inspection of plant facilities to see that all is running safely and smoothly. A relatively minor detail is that of pre- paring accurate reports concerning the con- dition and progress of the school. Of a more demanding nature is the job of promoting the best educational program possible for the stu- dents. He is also responsible for seeing that staff members understand and execute their duties, and for assisting them if necessary. All these responsibilities rest capably in the hands of Mr. Kenneth Johns who has served as principal of Southern Garrett County Jr. Sr. High School for the past eight years. Pre- vious to his move to this county he was a teacher in Bel Air, Maryland, for five years. He has both his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Denver, and Columbia Uni- versity respectively. He has also done grad- uate work at the Universities of Colorado, Maryland, Wisconsin and West Virginia. He is an active member of community organi- zations. : Mr. Johns is noted for his fairness and justice to students and parents alike. The heart of his program has always been the needs of the students of Southern High School. STANDING R. to L.: Kay Bowman, Treasurer, Paul Marucci, Secretary. CLASS HISTORY OUR STORY Our short life at Southern High School began in September of 1957 when the class entered the schoolas seventh graders. It was a very bewildering experience, especially since we had to suffer the consequences of being the littlest students of Southern, both in height and stature. To lead us through the frustration of high school's first year we elected Jack Jones as president with Welton Lane to assist him as vice-president. Kitty Duling was chosen to han- dle the secretary's duties and the treasurer's responsibilities went to Nelson Swartzentruber. The following year as we returned to school as eighth graders, we began to feel like ''old pros.'' This year we chose Jack Jones president, Nelson Swartzentruber vice-president, Cindy White secretary, and Peggy Shaffer treasurer. Our first big step in high school came the following year when we moved up to freshmen. Mary Germain was selected to be our president with Nelson Swartzentruber, vice-president; Cindy White, secretary; and Kathy Gonder, treasurer. The next year found us as sophomores with Jack Jones once again president; Nelson Swartzentruber, vice-president; Mary Laskey, secretary; and Marty McComas treasurer. In the fall of 1961 we entereda very prosperous and happy year as juniors. Todd Schiable was delegated to act as ourpresident with Mary Laskey as vice-president. Also Cindy White gained the secretarial post and Dave Nordeck was elected to be our treasurer. It was a big year for the newjuniors withtheprom to sponsor. ''Moon River was the theme and the event turned out to be quite a success. Well, we then took our last step at Southern High School the following year. Our senior year began with the election of the officers: Todd Schiable, president; Mary Laskey, vice- president; Paula Marucci, secretary; and Kay Bowman, treasurer. The Student Council was led by the president, Jack Jones, and Marty McComas was appointed editor of the yearbook. Dick Gnegy was named editor of the school newspaper. Our class participated in all the usual events; the homecoming dance, the college tea, the prom, and finally graduation and the end of our days at Southern. Southern High School has helped to develop us scholastically, athletically, and socially, and has helped us on our way to become dependent and mature adults. Therefore, the class would like to thank the administration and all the other people who are responsible for assist- ing and guiding us in this first big step in life. a PO 7 MARY LOU ADAMS Academic Quill and Scroll F.T.A. 10-12 Yearbook 10, Acorn Staff 11-12 EDWARD ALVIN BATEMAN Academic Letter Awards Journalism Baseball, Basketball BARBARA ANN BAKER General Library Assistant BETTY JEAN BEEMAN General Business LINDA LOU BEEGHLY General Business Prom Steering Committee F.H.A. 12 Library Assistant MARGARET JEAN BECKMAN General Business FHA.
