America The Union of Fifty States we sometimes call America is not just a material land of mountains and valleys and plains; of farms and factories; not even of houses we call homes and beautiful buildings we call churches. America is a dream - a dream of freedom and liberty; an ideal pursued perchance so often with lagging feetand mistaken roads but pursued persistently by many who may have hope, faith, and love for that ideal. America's many material achievements are not its main products - they are a by-pro- duct. America may be materially and scientifically out-distanced if men under dictator- ship strive harder than men under liberty. But America will not be equalled until her dream is equalled and her ideal is matched. Our by-products of material and scientific success are wonderful by-products. We should continue to seek supremacy in them. They bring health and comfort and lessen richness, suffering and distress. We want opportunity for all men to achieve these by- products. But let us never confuse the desirable and needed material by-product with the goal of life, liberty and pursuit of nappiness for which our nation was founded. Until a nation ex- cels usin freedom andsecurity for man's inalienable rights, America will not be surpass- ed, In a world divided by two major idealogical political concepts, we hope the thoughts expressed above have become indelibly instilled in your hearts and minds. As you com- mence your new life, you carry from your faculty congratulations and best wishes for a bright and prosperous future. May your share of the things YOU hold dear be great. Remember how long the halls seemed and how the bell system wasa source of constant frustration? We survived the seventh grade though, and elected Frank Vetter as our president along with Sandra Orr, vice presi- dent; Sandra Martin, secretary; and Dick Dixon, treasurer. Eight grade came and went and we elected Sandra Orr, president; Porter Welch, vice president; Margie White, secretary; and Bill Roy, treasurer. As Freshmen we selected officers and Porter Welch was named president. Elected to serve with him were Mary Ann Burgwald, Margie White and Pat Carlson. The ninth grade party was our first big social event, a very formal affair. The tenth grade saw Sandy Orr elected president along with Jim Gower, vice president; Margie White, secretary; and Pat Carlson, treasurer. Our Junior year arrivedand withit much activity. This was the year our basketball team took second place in the state Class A finals. Most of the class effort went into preparing for the Prom in honor of our seniors. The theme was Wonderland By Night. Remember how it snowed that night? Our officers were Porter Welch, CLARK SHARPLESS, Margie White and June Evans. The last of our days at Southern are coming to a close. We entered Southern this past fall as seniors. To guide us through this last year we chose Porter Welch, Bill Roy, Margie White, and June Evans. In June we will graduate with some very fond memories: Memories of the sock hop; the Christmas Tea; the worrying about grades, the pep rallies; the band Choral Concert; the won- derful prom, and above all, our friends and fellow classmates. I would like to join with the graduating class of '62 in saying ahearty thanks to all who played a part in this our story.
