Kenneth Johns - Principal Our forefathers, striving to their best lights, took a wil- derness and reduced it to some form of civilization. To fall heir to such a glorious history and heritage is the privilege of American youth. If I should have one uppermost thought to give to our young graduates today, it would be: Prepare for opportunity, because it is coming your way inthe U.S.A. I like very muchthe philosophy expressedin thethought, ''He who builds no castles in the air, builds no castles anywhere, and in building those castles one must have under them the foundation of the right attitude t oward life. It is my perso- nal belief that attitude is of more importance than aptitude. Keep this thought in mind as you travel the pathways of life and you can be assured of a successful future. W. Days When 242 of us entered Southern in 1954 and walked down the long hall to the cafeteria to await our homeroom assignments, we had no idea of the opportunities and experiences that were ahead of us as stu- dents of Southern High School. Our principal that was Dr. James S. Collins, and our advisors were Mrs. Burnetta DeVore and Mrs. Vera Mussard. Elections of class officers were soon underway, and those elected were Carolyn Spoerlein, President; Glenn Lane, Vice President; Willard Ann Glotfelty, secretary; and Richard Dusic, treasurer. The hike to the Community Ball Park for our class picnic was a swell way to end the year as seventh graders. InSeptember 1955 we entered the eighth grade. Mr. W. Kenneth Johns was our new principal that year. The class chose as their leaders Carolyn Spoerlein, President; Ann Lee Lohr, Vice President; Willard Ann Glotfelty, Secretary; and Georgia Ann Glotfelty, Treasurer. We were all looking forward to the biggest event of the year, the eight-grade picnic. It was all that we have imagined-fun, laughter and memories! 1956-FRESHMEN. Miss Dilgard and Mrs. McManis were our advisors. Class Officers were Glenn Lane, President; Connie Clary, Vice President; Willard Ann Glotfelty, Secretary; and Georgia Ann Glot- felty, Treasurer. Our picnic days were over and we had graduated to parties. Our ninth-grade party was fantastic. The theme was Butterfly. With wings on our feet, everyone flitted around the cafeteria to music that will ring in our ears forever. In the tenth grade, Mary Lynn Kreyenbuhl was elected president; Connie Clary, vice president; Willard Ann Glotfelty, secretary; and Georgia Ann Glotfelty, treasurer. Carolyn Spoerlein and Steve Malone were chosen to tour the United Nations. Catch a falling Star'' was the theme of the tenth-grade party which ended another year offine memories. 1958, we were juniors, and we had many great challenges ahead of us. Among these was the planning of the Jr.-Sr. Prom. Miss Idleman was our advisor. Class officers were Gary Evans, President; Connie Clary, Vice President; Willard Ann Glotfelty, Secretary; and Keith Butler, Treasurer. Lorretta Yoder, Patsy Gower, Carolyn Miller, Sandra Savage, and Ken Wenger were those chosen from our class to go to the United Nations. This was the year of our first Homecoming celebration. The long awaited day of March finally arrived when the juniors received their class rings. The hands of the juniors were waving proudly to everyone so that the rings might be displayed. April 27, 1959 will be remembered as the night of Stardust''-the Jr.-Sr. Prom. This really climaxed the school year. On September 1, 1959, the graduating class of 1960 entered its last lap at Southern. It was hard to be- lieve that we were seniors and that we would never again enter Southern as students. Keith Butler was elected to lead our seniorclass with Ann Lee Lohr, Vice President; Mary Lynn Kreyenbuhl, secretary; and Patsy Gower, Treasurer. The students that went to the United Nations from grade twelve were Marilyn Buckalew, LaVerna Shaffer, Jane Hanst, Willard Ann Glotfelty, Bob Miller, and Edward Umstot. Dave Gonder was appointed editor of the HIGHLANDER, and Gary Evans was chosen editor of the Acorn. The Homecoming Dance was held on November 14th. in honor of Southern's first winning football team. The senior year would not have been complete without the Jr.-Sr. Prom. It was the last big social get together before we all went our separate ways. Now that we have graduated, we look back and thank each of our teachers, our parents, and the citizens of the community who made our high school life so meaningful and helpful to us. We are proud to say that we were students of Southern High School. To those who are to follow us, we have one bit of advice: work hard and enjoy every minute of your high school days; nothing can be more help- ful and wonderful. Our School Year Going for a Ride? - Yes, Frederick went for a ride, a ride that took them right out of the Maryland District ITournaments. Frederick High was our first opponent and was defeated with relative ease. In the second district playoff, the Highlanders came out from under a 10 point deficit at half-time to top Howard County High of Ellicott City with a score of 77 to 66. Then - the fatal blow - in the finals the Allegany Campers got lucky and brought the High- landers to the lowlands. Thus Southern High rated 2nd. best in Maryland District I. Even though we didn't make it to the State Championships we're none the less proud of the best basketball team Garrett County has ever had, ateam withthe outstanding and enviable record of 14 wins to only 4 losses this season. Team, we compliment you for the splendid showing you made at every game. Everywhere you went, when you walked in everyone knewthat THIS WAS SOUTHERN!
