SENIOR CLASS 1958 Our Record of Happy Hours began in 1952 when we entered Southern High, a new building being occupied for the first time. Our principal that year was Mr. Maurice A, Dunkle and our seventh grade sponsor was Mr. Z, R. Knotts. The enrollment of our class then was 199. Seventh grade elections were soon underway, and the results were as follows: Cynthia Nace, president; Carol Phillips, vice president; Brenda Davis, secretary; and Artie Ashby, treasurer, Senior Class Officers | The magazine campaign ended with 7F being the only homeroom a to reach its quota with a total of $170.10. Left to Right-J oann Sharpless ? Treas.; Jackie Friend, Secy.; Katherine Filsinger, V. Pres.; Robert Bittinger, Pres, Remember the seventh grade picnic ? It was held that year at the Community Ball Park on May 13. We played softball, dodgeball, croquet, and horseshoes. Blue ribbons were awarded to members of the winning teams. Whata swell wayto end our seventh grade---- with loads of wonderful memories! In September, 1953, we entered our eighth grade, and second year at Southern. Dr, James Collins was our new principal that year. Our enrollment from the seventh grade dropped from 199 to 155, but the remaining students seemed to again select fine officers tohead their class, For the second time, Cynthia Nace was elected president. Robert Bittinger was the new vice president, Brenda Davis, secretary, and Artie Ashby, treasurer, were re- elected, This year in the magazine campaign 8A was out in front as high homeroom with $120.00. Remembering all the fun we had at our seventh grade picnic, we were surely looking forward to this year's affair. It proved to be everything for which we hadhoped. There were loads for everyone to participate inand popand potato chips galore. It is another won- derful and ''Happy Record for us to remember. In 1954 we entered Southern not justas the ninth graders of S.H.S., but as the contented class of Freshman. Gee, it surely sounded good! From the eighth grade to the ninth, we didn't lose or gain a student; our enrollment again was 155. Mrs. McManisand Miss Dilgard were our advisors and sponsors for this year. Freshmen officers this yearwere: Brenda Davis, president; King Tower, vice president; Cynthia Nace, secretary; and Katherine Filsinger, treasurer, Since we had matured from picnics to parties, we had our Ninth Grade Party, and what a party it was! It was held in the school cafeteria and everyone really enjoyed himself, Ata special assembly during our Freshmen year, the Queen and King of Hearts were chosen by the students of the ninth grade. Those chosen were Brenda Davis and Dana Dintaman, In 1955 we were now in senior high. It did feel good, Delores Riley was elected president this year; Neva Bowers, vice president; Janice Jenkins, secretary; and Artie Ashby, treasurer. Cheerleading tryouts were held and the two sophomores chosen were Brenda Davis with Deloris Riley, substitute. The Little Highlander quint lost to Aurora High School 34-32, Keith Mer sing was high man with 16 points. It was really some game! In April, we held our tenth grade party in the school cafeteria. The theme was Band of Gold which was chosen by the whole Sopho- more class. Bill Henline and Cynthia Nace were chosenas our King and Queen. A shadow fell on our Junior year with the death of Neva Bowers, who had been electedas our class president, Nancy Harvey, who had beenelected vice president, took over the job of president and then held the responsibility of the biggest event of our high school career, our Jr.-Sr, Prom, Cynthia Nace served as secretary, and Janice Jenkins, treasurer, To help with planning the Prom,a steering committee was appoint- ed, The appointees were Pat Friend, Pat Shaffer, Joan Paige, Carole Savage, Robert Peck, Katherine Hauser, Wellington Bittinger, Cynthia Nace, Joann Sharpless, and Janice Jenkins. Mr. Albert Ringer was our Jr, Class advisor. Cheerleaders chosen for 56-57 were Joan Paige, Delores Riley, and Brenda Davis. 10 On Oct, 31, we sponsored a Harvest Hop to help raise funds for the Prom, It turned out quiet well, andthe orchestra and decorations were grand, In February, intramurals were held and the 11-A girls were the senior high champs, They were presented a trophy with their section and the year in which they won engraved on it. The team consisted of Carole Savage, Joan Paige, Beverly Rees, Cynthia Nace, Bonnie Dragovich, Mary Helen Sollars, Sandra Wotring, Barbara Kreyenbull, Delores Riley, and Carol Beeman, Bonnie was high scorer in the play off game. One Aprilmorning you could see the juniors waving their hands, being so proud to finally receive their class rings. On May 10, the Sr. Chorus presented the Operetta,«H.M.S. Penifore. The two juniors with the leading roles were Keith Mérsing as Ralph Rackstraw and Joan Paige as Josephine, the captain's daughter, The evening that we were all waiting for finally-arrived, the night of our Jr.-Sr. Prom. The theme chosen by the Jr. Class was Midnight Under the Sea. It is really a happy record to re- member. On September 3, 1957, we entered the walls of S.H.S. as it's seniors, It was a great and wonderful feeling but, then, sad too, in away. Realizing it was our last year, we wanted to make it our very best. To lead our senior class this year, we elected Robert Bittinger ) as our president. Katherine Filsinger was elected vice president; Jackie Friend, secretary; and Joann Sharpless; treasurer. Artie Ashby was elected to lead our student body and hold the position of president ofour Student Council. Delores Riley was elected as Secretary, and Janice Jenkins, treasurer. On October 8th four seniors of the Senior Chorus were chosen to representS.H.S.at the Maryland All-State Chorus in Baltimore. These students were Keith Mersing, Katherine Filsinger, Carole Savage, and Joan Paige. The Annual Football Dance was held November 2 and Delores Riley was elected Football Queen. Joan Paige and Carole Savage were senior attendants. On November 22 the F.F.A. held the annual Sweetheart Dance.. Barbara Glaze was chosen queen. Kathryn Hauser was chosen editor of the Acorn, our school paper. Delores Riley was selected editor of the Highlander. Our Record would not have been complete without the Jr.-Sr. Prom, which we shall never forget. The thought of the Sermon to the Graduates will always linger in our minds and hearts, The day of Commencement has finally arrived and we receive our long- awaited diplomas. Now, looking back, we can see the wonderful memories we will carry in the future, Although it will be hard to leave friends, teachers, and all the activities we've had, we must look forward, We are proud to be graduating from Southern, proud to say we have been students of Southern High School. To those who are to follow us and to our administration we want to say thank you. . thank you for making this era of our life one which shall be cherished forever,
