OFFICERS (Below) Sam Ashenfelter, Vice-President Jenny Kessel, Secretary John White, President Patricia Burrell, Treasurer Student Government The Student Council has two major aims and purposes that are for the improvement of both the students and the school. For the student, the aims and purposes are those that will provide wholesome and satisfying experi- ence. This is done by providing an opportunity of pupil participation and expression; to aid in the development of student leadership and promote good citizenship through student elections, by creating respect for others and by teaching the division of labor and sharing of responsibilities. For the school, the aims and objectives of the Student Council must contribute to the effectiveness of its pro- gram. There are several different areas in the school which this will affect. One of the most important is good harmonious relations between the teachers and students. The other aims are to develop good school spirit and loyalty to the school, promote respect for authority of the school personnel, and stimulate good scholarship to have students ready to be in charge of extracurricular activities, assemblies, dances, drives, etc. 42 Mr. Harold B. Clottelty, Kansas City Springfield The F.F.A. is a national organization of and for farm boys enrolled in vocational agriculture. It stresses leadership, cooperation, and citizenship. Before a boy can enter this organization he must not only be enrolled in yoca- tional agriculture but he must also have approved plans for his supervised farming program. The local Chapter has participated in various activities throughout the year—such as sponsoring an annual parent and son banquet; Square Dances; magazine, coke, and seed sales; teams in judging contests; joint F.F.A. and F.H.A. picnic; and managing the school farm. The milk judg- ing team, Ralph Arnold and James Mellinger, took first place in last year’s state contest, and thus earned the right to represent the state at the regional contest held at Springfiéld, Massachusetts, last September, where they ranked second among 13 northeastern states. Thomas Bernard was also awarded a trip to Springfield for having achieved first place in the state poultry judging contest. The president, Harold Bittinger, served as a delegate of Maryland to the national F.F.A. Convention held in Kansas City in October. Southern’s Chapter consists of eighty boys ranging from grades nine through twelve. studio Visual The purpose of this club is to teach the proper use of audio- visual equipment. The Club is under the direc- tion of Mr. Crone. Its officers are: President, Harry Glaze; Vice pres- ident, Norman ‘Reckart; Secre- tary, Rita Holler; and Treasurer, Beverly Riley. This year the club has added rewinders, splicer, and a P. A. system to its equipment. F.T.A. is a national organiza- tion found in secondary schools and colleges. It is composed of students who are interested in the teaching profession. Its purpose is to acquaint students with the opportunities and requirements in the field of teaching. Home Economtes These 32 girls are from the tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade home economics classes. They prepared and served the F.F.A. dinner on October 30th. They also help when special dinners are served at Southern High School. 47 1954 The senior class proudly presents the ten seniors Whom it has chosen as the most repre- sentative youth of the class of 1954. Although the record failed to show victory, the team improved vastly and Southern should find a nucleus for a very zood soccer team this next year. Cross Country The cross country team _partici- pated in a state meet in Baltimore on November 4 and placed third in its division. Three members of the team will return next year. 54 Gaselball and “fnack Southern High School had a very successful season in its first year of interscholastic baseball. It had two losses, both of which were to University High, of Morgantown, W. Va. In its first year of track, Southern had a fairly good team. The team was scheduled for five meets but was only able to attend three of these—Hagerstown, Frostburg and Parsons . This year, with several of the team returning, Southern hopes to have a more fortunate season. 55 O .te students of Southern High School are fortunate to be members of communities which place a high value upon citizenship. There are in Southern Garrett County many professional and businessmen and women and private citizens who are making the county a better place in which to live. It is through them that we as students are encouraged to develop our own ideals and abilities so that we too may take our places here.
