In BUILDING OUR AMERICAN COMMUNITIES we put up “Buckle Up” signs, handed out tractor safety stickers to be placed on tractors and bought chick pheasants to raise and set free to increase the number of pheasants in Fulton County. Again this year we sold citrus fruit for Christmas. January 13-17 we participated in the Farm Show (Environmental Contest. Team A: Chuck Kave, Hollis True, Russell Smith, Chris Shaw, Larry Wilson. On April 8, Travis Fogel, Brian Lake, Mike Snyder and Andy Mellott entered the McConnellsburg Public Speaking Contest and on April 23, Travis, Brian and Andy entered the Area Bedford, Blair and Fulton FFA Public Speaking Contest. In March the FFA went on a field trip to the Gettysburg Agway Plant. Mr. Ackroyd who talked about rabies, Dan Fowler, a Fulton County extension Agent and Mr. Hann, who talked about soil were among our several guest speakers who visited the FFA this year. There was a computer installed in the shop area which many FFA members learned to use and do word processing. It was used greatly for all FFA activities. The annual banquet was held on May 2. The year 1985-86 brought a new sport to S.F.H.S., Girls Volleyball, under the coaching of Cindy Dorin. The girls had a lot to learn about the sport even though they had been playing it for years in gym class. There is a big difference between competitive volleyball and phys. ed. volleyball. The Indians started the season a little weak and shaky, but within weeks, much improvement was seen. Even though they were improving with each game, the fact still remained that they were going up against very experienced teams, some of which had won state titles. However, the Indians received many compliments from other coaches on their achievements. The J. V. ended its season with a record of 5 wins and 9 losses. The varsity s record was 3 wins and 12 losses, which included the playoff game with McConnellsburg. The Indians defeated the Spartans in the playoff game which allowed them to compete at the district level. Southern Fulton was defeated by Meyersdale at Districts with scores of 15 9, 15-13. With the skills learned and the floor experience gained in their first year, the Indians will surely give the other teams a run for their money in upcoming years. Seniors: Kelly McGuire. Larry Palmer played it cool, calm, and collect- ed after their defeat in the District 5, Class A boys basketball championship. He could savor the first district title in the school’s 55-year basketball his- tory. “I’m just happy for the kids, ’’ Palmer said. “We’ve had tremendous fan support. We've had some good ballplayers down through the years. This is for them, too ” A banquet was held in the school cafeteria to honor the team. Sweatsuits, donated by The First National Bank of McConnellsburg, H. B. Mellott Estates, Lee and Carol Johnson, Peck’s Milk Ser- vice, Geno’s Grocery, Russell Mellott Lumber Co., IGA Foodliner of McConnellsburg, Palmer’s Store and Ward’s Meat Market, were given to each player.
