irtWWWWAYWWWYWVWWW.VWW r------------------------- THE 1978 SENIOR CLASS OF SOUTHERN FULTON HIGH SCHOOL PROUDLY PRESENTS THE CHIEFTAIN VOLUME XXVI WARFORDSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA WAVAVAVAYAWAWAVAVAVsW We the class of 1978 have made many enjoyable memories throughout our high school years at S.F.H.S. We will, from this day on, have to look forward to more rewarding experiences in our future. As a remembrance of our senior year, we have put a lot of effort into our 1978 edition of the Chieftain Yearbook. We would like to express our appreciation to those who have made the 1978 Yearbook possible. The days we spent together on putting our efforts and co-operation towards the yearbook have been a splendid, but yet a hard ex- perience. We hope that you enjoy our yearbook and appreciate our efforts. ALMA MATER Blow, oh gentle mountain breezes. Prom the golden west; Breathe thy peaceful evening tidings To S.F.H.S. Whisper to us words of pleasure. As the dim twilight Softly gathers round our colors. Dear Maroon and White. To the Indians brave and noble. We will not refuse Loyalty and firm devotion. W hen we win or lose; We will always sing thy praises. W ork for thy success. Hail to noble Alma Mater. Hail S.F.H.S. For I have counseled and guided your brothers and sisters in another time. I've helped seek goals and planned the routes to dreams, castles and thoughts sublime. I've heard you argue against the swells of our civil and social oceans. And responded in kind to sway you to understand our laws, thoughts and motions. The baton is now yours to carry — chase against time and times — challenge what may be. Be gentle ... concern yourself with change for it can be harsh and cruel to you and me. But let changes come — with exhilarating life breathed into it by your work, love and thought. Perhaps your efforts, idealistic and vibrant will unfold the strife-free world I sought. You are now yourself ... none other ... for blood, genes and the world have already made the cast. Perform well, for in years to come I will again evaluate the grades you've amassed. I love you for you are youth ... you are also my future ... 3 School Board ROW I: C. Richard Moscmann. Jr., Vincent J. Dattoli. President; Dari L. Hixon, Vice-President. ROW 2: Levcarl A. Schricver. Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind. Smiles we gave to one another Of the way we were. Can it be that life is oh so simple then. Or has time rewritten every line. If we had a chance to do it all again, Tell me, would we, could we? Memories may be beautiful and yet. What’s to painful to remember We simply just can’t forget So it’s the laughter we will remember. We will remember. Of the way we were. CLASS HISTORY We, being the 48th graduating class and containing only 45 students started our junior high school years with little experience of the high society education. During 9th grade we visited the Capitol and William Penn Museum in Harrisburg, Pa. In 10th grade we visited the Department of Treasury, Washington, D.C. In our Junior year we received our class rings and our class jackets, visited the Smithsonian Institute, Washington, D.C. We worked hard decorating for the 1977 Junior and Senior Prom — “We’ve Only Just Begun” — which contained a beautiful gazebo in the middle of the dance floor. We hope that the Juniors will work as diligently and have as much fun arranging our 1978 Prom. We started our Senior year hoping to be successful seniors. We topped the magazine sale records with a total sale of $5,355.58, and as of January we have sold $2,500 in ad- vertising sales and we have sales yet to receive. Being a small, but mighty class, we have topped all records. We have had a rewarding year because we have worked very hard. We now are planning a future full of happiness, memories, and success. 21 Elmer Grant Bowman. Miss Eleanor Crawford, also one of the first teachers of Southern Fulton High School, became Mrs. Weiss. Dr. and Mrs. George Weiss Mr. Weiss's life can be divided into five periods of time since he graduated from Albright College at Myerstown in 1926. The first period lasted only one year. During August of 1927, he began looking for a teaching position. Only one opportunity came along at that late date, the one at Warfordsburg. Thus began the second period. Those seven years at Warfordsburg were busy ones and were packed with fond memories. It was then that he met Miss Eleanor Crawford, who later became his wife. The third period, the one at Bellwood. lasted for seventeen years. It was during this time, in 1935, that Miss Eleanor Crawford became Mrs. Weiss. During the Bellwood years his wife did not leach. Next was the Kutztown period which lasted another seventeen years. It was during this lime that he earned the doctor of education degree at Penn State. Then he became, in fairly rapid succession, director of student teaching, director of the laboratory school, director of placement, head of the department of education, and finally Kutztown's first dean of teacher education. During this period his wife taught for fourteen years in the Boyertown Area Schools. The final stage of his life he calls the retirement period. During this period, in 1968, Mrs. Weiss and Mr. Weiss did some traveling together. Since retiring they have been to Spain. Portugal, Morocco, the British Isles, Florida, the Canadian Northwest, and Mexico. 78 STUDENT COUNCIL ROW I: Cinda Douglas. Treasurer; Debbie Richards. Vice-President; Diane Hoffman.
