FOREWORD It is with great pride that we, the class of 1977, present the 1977 edition of The Chieftain. Our prupose has been to familiarize you with our activities, our achievements, our walls, and most of all our people. Our 1976-77 school year has been different, as each one is, for each one is an individual. August 31,1976, was the first day for students back to S.F.H.S. The discipline code, the newly organized PTSA, student parking tickets, new faces, and familiar faces all gave us hopeful promises for our future days. Fall went quickly — girls' basket- ball, the spectacular” school carnival, and open house led us right into November and an early, bone-chilling winter. Christmas was anticipated for days with the decorations by the art club for the concert, and with the acute com- petition shown by the homerooms in the F.H.A. door-decorating contest. The crunch”, as we call it, began after Christmas. “The crunch of ice, snow, doors, snowplows, buses, knees, toes, fingers, and most of all the fuel crunch.” Our Pennsylvania Governor, Mr. Shapp, declared no school for the days of Jan. 27, 28, and 31. February was still hit with “the crunch causing delays and early dismissals but “Punxsatawney Phil”, our one and only Pennsy ground-hog, promised spring in six weeks. Our basketball team kept warm all through the winter, and put a glow in all our hearts with a very good record. March brought out our softball and track teams. For the first time in many years, our girls are going to have a track team. Our seniors are still asking, “When do we get to graduate? but are sure that they will sometime. Graduation will be on the last day of school, but our yearbook staff will have a few days beyond. What lies in the future, we know not — because the future holds much of the unknown. Hi ALMA MATER Blow, oh gentle mountain breezes. To the Indians brave and noble. From the golden west; We will not refuse Breathe thy peaceful evening tidings Loyalty and firm devotion. To S.F.H.S. When we win or lose; Whisper to us words of pleasure, We will always sing thy praises, As the dim twilight Work for thy success; Softly gathers round our colors, Hail to noble Alma Mater, Dear Maroon and White. Hail S.F.H.S. We the class of 1977, are very proud to dedicate our yearbook, The Chieftain , to Mr. William W. Ham- mond, for his loyal devotion he has shown us in helping with our proms, plays, concerts, and other school activities. Mr. Hammond attended West Virginia University and after graduating in 1960, he began his teaching career at Southern Fulton. Through the years of wonderful help and understanding, Mr. Hammond will always be remembered in our thoughts and especially in our hearts. Mr. Hammond s words of advice are: Don't be so sure of yourself; always keep an open mind. 3
