Today I will surpass every action which I performed yesterday. I will climb todays mountain ... yet tomorrow I will climb higher than today. To surpass the deeds of others is unimportant; to surpass my own is everything. THE 1977 SENIOR CLASS THE CHIEFTAIN Volume XXV Warfordsburg, Pennsylvania FOREWORD It is with great pride that we, the class of 1977, present the 1977 edition of The Chieftain. Our prupose has been to familiarize you with our activities, our achievements, our walls, and most of all our people. Our 1976-77 school year has been different, as each one is, for each one is an individual. August 31,1976, was the first day for students back to S.F.H.S. The discipline code, the newly organized PTSA, student parking tickets, new faces, and familiar faces all gave us hopeful promises for our future days. Fall went quickly — girls' basket- ball, the spectacular” school carnival, and open house led us right into November and an early, bone-chilling winter. Christmas was anticipated for days with the decorations by the art club for the concert, and with the acute com- petition shown by the homerooms in the F.H.A. door-decorating contest. The crunch”, as we call it, began after Christmas. “The crunch of ice, snow, doors, snowplows, buses, knees, toes, fingers, and most of all the fuel crunch.” Our Pennsylvania Governor, Mr. Shapp, declared no school for the days of Jan. 27, 28, and 31. February was still hit with “the crunch causing delays and early dismissals but “Punxsatawney Phil”, our one and only Pennsy ground-hog, promised spring in six weeks. Our basketball team kept warm all through the winter, and put a glow in all our hearts with a very good record. March brought out our softball and track teams. For the first time in many years, our girls are going to have a track team. Our seniors are still asking, “When do we get to graduate? but are sure that they will sometime. Graduation will be on the last day of school, but our yearbook staff will have a few days beyond. What lies in the future, we know not — because the future holds much of the unknown. Hi ALMA MATER Blow, oh gentle mountain breezes. To the Indians brave and noble. From the golden west; We will not refuse Breathe thy peaceful evening tidings Loyalty and firm devotion. To S.F.H.S. When we win or lose; Whisper to us words of pleasure, We will always sing thy praises, As the dim twilight Work for thy success; Softly gathers round our colors, Hail to noble Alma Mater, Dear Maroon and White. Hail S.F.H.S. Ham- mond, for his loyal devotion he has shown us in helping with our proms, plays, concerts, and other school activities. Mr. Hammond attended West Virginia University and after graduating in 1960, he began his teaching career at Southern Fulton. Through the years of wonderful help and understanding, Mr. Hammond will always be remembered in our thoughts and especially in our hearts. Mr. Hammond s words of advice are: Don't be so sure of yourself; always keep an open mind. 3 ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT Franklyn I. Geist. Sr. B.S.— M Ed. TIMES OF YOUR LIVES Good morning yesterday; wake up. and time has slipped away. And suddenly It's hard to find the memories you left behind, remember. Do you remember the laughter and the tears, the shadow of misty yester-years? The good times and the bad you’ve seen, and all the others in between, remember. Do you remember the times of your lives? Reach back for the joy and the sorrow, put them away in your mind; for memories are time that you borrow. To spend when you get to tomorrow. Here comes the setting sun: the seasons are passing one by one. So. gather moments while you may; collect the dreams you dream today, remember. Will you remember the times of your life? mufttj SENIORS DEBRA JEAN ADELSBERGER Debbie General JANET LEE BARBER Jan-a-b Vocational GINGER LEA BARNHART “Ging Academic KELLY SUE BEATTY Kel Academic JONIERAE BISHOP “Bishop Business Education DONALD REED BUTERBAUGH JR. “Duck” General 18 SENIORS JANET LEECARNELL Frog- General RUTH ANN CARSON Ruthie Business Education PAMELA ELAINE CLINGERMAN Pam” Business Education GLENDA KAYDENEEN Glenda Academic TRECILA BELLE DENEEN ALAN BLAND DESHONG Trecila “Monk General Academic 19 SENIORS SHEILA MAE DESHONG “Ele Business Education SUSAN JEAN DESHONG “Sue” Business Education RICHARD CHARLES EADER Big Rich” General TRINA LEA ELBIN Trina Academic WILLIAM OSCAR DESHONG Bill- General RODNEY LYNN DIVELBLISS “Dibs” Vocational JUDITH ANN ERICSON “Charlie” General LINDA ELLEN EXLINE (SIGEL) Linda” General DAVID MICHAEL FISCHER Hook Vocational CARLA ALVINA FLETCHER Fletch General STUART KEVIN FLETCHER “Turtle” Vocational SENIORS LURAINEZOE FISCHER “Sue” General MATTHEW W. STUDENT COUNCIL ACTIVITIES Student Council this year was very active in sponsoring school activities. Council's main objective was to improve school spirit. The first sponsored activity was Color Day. This was a day on which the student body and teachers wore the school colors, maroon and white. The next ac- tivity, a sock-hop after the boys' basketball game, re- ceived the most favorable student response. An average of fifty students stayed for the sock-hop. Because of the success of the sock-hops, Council decided to sponsor a Fifties Day and to give prizes to the best dressed. Fifties Day participants in Junior High and Senior High. This day was a success. Council next sponsored both a fund rais- Student Council President. Maxine Schriever. Volunteer student slaves were sold for bids ranging from 10c to $5. These volunteer slaves were to obey their masters wishes for one school day. To improve student relations with other schools within the county. Student Council sponsored an Exchange Day with McConnellsburg and Forbes Road. To ensure many successful activities in the future, four representatives from our Student Council were sent to a Student Council Conference in Harrisburg. Our Parent-Daughter banquet was held on April 14, at the Potomac Room in Hancock, MD. This year our FHA adopted Mrs. Mary Keefer of War- fordsburg as our FHA grandmother. Almost each day two girls from our chapter would visit with her and assist her in her academic endeavors. In observance of Future Homemakers of America Week at SFHS, the club members honored employees on Appreciation Day. Recognition ribbons went to school bus drivers, cooks, janitors, secretaries, teachers, and the admin- istration. The chapter is making plans for the Spring State Convention in Pittsburgh. We are trying to establish availability of volun- teers to staff the health room when the nurse is not available. In the future we hope to use members of the club to aid in the screening of elementary students. In the past two years, we have had members of the club work at the Fulton County Medical Center, as volunteer Candy Stripers. Some members of the club volunteered their assistance with the Swine Flu immunization program. Our club finds enjoyment by helping those who are in need, and by doing this we gain experience and compassionate attitudes. CANDY STRIPERS Janet Carnell. Glenda Deneen. Eugenia Hann, Kelly Beatty. Ginger Barnhart ABSENT: Luraine Fischer Working at the Medical Center in McConnellsburg was a very challenging experience. During the Junior year we received our training and worked as Candy Stripers in our spare time. We had the opportunity to advance as we work- ed, also we had a chance to decide among ourselves if nursing was the career which we would choose to achieve in our future years. Working as Candy Stripers we were not always pleased at what we had to do or what we saw, but through all the trying times, we gained a great sense of satisfaction just knowing that we had helped someone and made them feel comfortable in their time of need. That feeling made it all worthwhile. STAGE BAND ROW 1: Dwight Bard Lisa Snyder Danny Gordon ROW 2: Beth Hann Sandy Mellott Cathy Durst Melinda Truax Lori Snyder Mr. Wolf.
