COUNTY BAND JANUARY 26, 1976 ROW I: Lisa Snyder. Sandy Mellott. Sandy Smith. Melinda Truax, Mr. Wolf. ROW' 2: Craig McCarty, Becky Hendershot, Dennis Palmer, Beth Hann, Kerry Hendershot. THE LEGEND OF THE ELM It is only an elm tree alone upon the hill. Many are the generations that have played beneath its shade, and many more are the generations that have passed by it, never wondering of its beginning, nor never dreaming of its end. Its grandparent stands tall and proud in Philadelphia. Proud with the honor of knowing that beneath its branches, in the early days of our nation. W'illiam Penn signed a treaty with the Indians in an attempt to preserve for us peace, brotherhood, and love. Then came pain, pain as a small blade took from among its branches a tiny twig. The twig was planted on the Rank Farm where it grew to be tall and strong as did the child Frank. A twig was then taken from this tree and brought to our little town where it was planted upon the hill by the class of 1934 in the spring of 1932. It is a living memorial to Mr. Frank Rank. who helped bring our school into being and worked to insure for us the life of education. The class of 1934 planted pines along side the elm to case the torment of the long, cold winters and so that in the coming spring the elm would be there, alive, once again. Power lines now weave through its top most branches and the green grass that once grew beside it is now a paved highway. It is old, and yet young children play beneath its shade and lovers slip silently out into the night to sit upon its trunk and build dreams upon the stars that peep out from its branches- never knowing the legend of the elm. -Doris Hann
