NGRE JftnJdamJ IrtWZt fivn PAST IN HONOR OF OUR BICENTENNIAL YEAR, WE, THE 1976 SENIOR CLASS OF SOUTHERN FULTON HIGH SCHOOL, PROUDLY PRESENT “THE CHIEFTAIN” VOLUME 24 FOREWORD Our schools with their friendly walls hold fond memories of happy hours, cherished friendships, serious endeavors, and lasting achievement for this year’s graduating class and all previous classes. We, the class of 1976 hope to bring back cherished memories with pictures and history of the school district in this year’s edition of the Chieftain. We wish to express our appreciation to all the people whose co-operation helped make this yearbook possible. It has been a rewarding experience for us to try to piece our heritage together; and mistakes have no doubt been made, but we hope you will choose to overlook these and enjoy our efforts. IN SCHOOL DAYS Still sits the school-house by the road, A ragged beggar sleeping; Around it still the sumachs grow. And blackberry-vines are creeping. Within, the master's desk is seen. Deep scarred by raps official; The warping floor, the battered seats. The jack-knife’s carved initial; The charcoal frescos on its wall; Its door's worn sill, betraying The feet that, creeping slow to school. Went storming out to playing! Long years ago a winter sun Shone over it at setting; Lit up its western window-panes. And low eaves’ icy fretting. It touched the tangled golden curls. And brown eyes full of grieving. Of one who still her steps delayed When all the school were leaving. For near her stood the little boy Her childish favor singled; His cap pulled low upon a face W'here pride and shame were mingled Pushing with restless feet the snow To right and left, he lingered;- As restlessly her tiny hands The blue-checked apron fingered. He saw her lift her eyes; he felt The soft hand's light caressing. And heard the tremble of her voice. As if a fault confessing. “I’m sorry that 1 spelt the word: I hate to go above you, Because,” the brown eyes lower fell. “Because, you see. I love you!” Still memory to a gray-haired man That sweet child-face is showing. Dear girl! the grasses on her grave Have forty years been growing! He lives to learn, in life’s hard school, How few who pass above him Lament their triumph and his loss. Like her, because they love him. -John Greenlcaf Whittier TABLE OF CONTENTS Administration and School Board 4 Faculty 5 Staffs 9 Activities 11 Sports 43 Underclassmen 57 Seniors 69 Heritage of our Past 81 Past Graduation Classes 104 Advertisements 127 It’s Academic 149 Graduation 154 Senior Directory 158 Greg Mellott, Student Council President, announcing the day’s events. With great honour and appreciation, we. the class of 1976, dedicate our yearbook, the Chieftain, to Mr. John Elbin. Mr. Elbin graduated from Southern Fulton in 1948 and received his degree from Millersville State College in 1952. He then served as an academic instructor in the Air Force until 1955. Mr. Elbin began his teaching career at Newport. Pa., where he taught one year before coming to Southern Fulton in 1956. For 12 years Mr. Elbin was our baseball coach until 1973. His Athletic Banquet speeches will always be remembered. Mr. Elbin’s words of advice are: “Be yourself, don’t pattern yourself after someone else. Don’t try to be something you’re not.” 3 ADMINISTRATION SUPERINTENDENT I-rankly n I. Giest. Sr. B.S. Many are the generations that have played beneath its shade, and many more are the generations that have passed by it, never wondering of its beginning, nor never dreaming of its end. Its grandparent stands tall and proud in Philadelphia. Proud with the honor of knowing that beneath its branches, in the early days of our nation. W'illiam Penn signed a treaty with the Indians in an attempt to preserve for us peace, brotherhood, and love. Then came pain, pain as a small blade took from among its branches a tiny twig. The twig was planted on the Rank Farm where it grew to be tall and strong as did the child Frank. A twig was then taken from this tree and brought to our little town where it was planted upon the hill by the class of 1934 in the spring of 1932. It is a living memorial to Mr. Frank Rank. who helped bring our school into being and worked to insure for us the life of education. The class of 1934 planted pines along side the elm to case the torment of the long, cold winters and so that in the coming spring the elm would be there, alive, once again. Power lines now weave through its top most branches and the green grass that once grew beside it is now a paved highway. It is old, and yet young children play beneath its shade and lovers slip silently out into the night to sit upon its trunk and build dreams upon the stars that peep out from its branches- never knowing the legend of the elm. -Doris Hann MAJORETTES: (I RON! In some ways I'm different entirely. It’s a little sad to see children play, to think I will never again be that way. Perhaps it is the future I fear, fear of losing something of the past that is very dear. Unlike k ved ones, time we cannot hold; we pass by a mirror and realize it has made us old. It’s just that the minutes, hours, and days go by so fast and happy times of the present soon become the past. Yes. it seems just like yesterday that we were small, then suddenly years come upon us and it doesn't seem like timeat all. Trying so hard to keep up with today, memories of good times fading ways. Growing up is hard to do when you want to enjoy life’s moments which are so few. I might always be a child at heart and from that will be much harder to part. Bven though it rained the whole day, and everyone got wet, it was still a lot of fun. During the day we attended shows, rode on rides, ate lots of pizza and hot dogs, and got tired. In the evening the class ate supper at a Hot Shoppe and had their choice of the menu. The busses pulled into the school about midnight with a bunch of tired but happy seniors. PETER PAN INN Junction of 80 I 355 Urbana. Maryland On May 6, the senior class went to Fredrick. MD as part of their trip. They dined at the Peter Pan Inn at Urbana, where they had their choice of ham, shrimp, steak, and chicken. Afterwards, they went to the Fredrick Mall, shopped in the stores, and then enjoyed their choice of the movies, “Blazing Saddles” or “One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest.” 41 s p o R T S BOYS’ BASKETBALL TEAM 1936-37 ROW 1: Scott Palmer. Our track team has had a very good year, and everyone at Southern Fulton is very proud of them. We have two exceptional athletes of whom to be especially proud Kevin Mellott and Paul Goodrich who have become district champions in the Two-Mile Run and 330 Intermediate Hurdles, respectively. They also competed in the Pennsylvania State Cham- pionship Meet this Spring. In the district meet Kevin placed second in the mile, but also placed first in the Two-Mile. Paul placed first in his event also. Southern Fulton’s last district champion was approximately ten years ago. During our Eighth-Grade year we went to Anlietam, Crystal Grottos, and Harpers Ferry. Slowly progressing through our Freshmen and Sophomore years, we finally became Juniors. During that year we sold Stanley, candles, and visited the Smithsonian Institute, and how we anticipated the arrival of our class rings and class jackets. We will never forget all the enjoyment we had planning our great, ’75 Prom “We May Never Pass This Way Again.” Now here we are as ‘big, bad Seniors.’ This year was highlighted by breaking the yearbook sales record for S.F.H.S. with a total order of 1,150 copies. We also had our annual Senior magazine sale. As a result of these accomplishments, we traveled to Shady Grove and Kings Dominion in May. All this, plus our Jr. and Sr. Play, “Egad, The Woman in White,” helped to make our senior year a very successful one. Now it is time for us to travel on, each going our separate way. We will always have those treasured memories of things we did and the places we went together. We have shared the good and the bad, although at times we all wished we could forget school completely; but we made it through. School days are now behind for most of us, but we are only beginning our real struggles in the world away from the security of the walls of S.F.H.S. ALMA MATER Blow, oh gentle mountain breezes, From the golden west; Breathe thy peaceful evening tidings To S.F.H.S. Whisper to us words of pleasure. As the dim twilight Softly gathers round our colors. Dear Maroon and White. To the Indians brave and noble. We will not refuse Loyalty and firm devotion. When we win or lose; We will always sing thy praises. BOARD YARD SCHOOL Mrs. Estalcne Gregory SCHOOL BELLS AND SCHOOL BUSES FIRST SCHOOL BUSES In 1926 the schools in Bethel Township consolidated. With the one-room schools this meant a way of transportation would be necessary to get to Warfordsburg and other schools so I started building school bus bodies in my shop. Helping me build these were Wade, Mark, Willis and Cam. Others helping were Walter Spade, Simon Morse, Brooks Smith, and others. Clyde and Russell Truax helped to paint the bodies. I purchased lots of my supplies from R.D. McKee in Hagerstown, Md. I remember them telling me once when I had placed an order for 12,000 bolts, that it was the largest order they had ever received at one time. The buses went to other counties also. Fourteen went to Stoney Creek Township in Somerset County. I guess we built around 120 buses in all. by Edward G. McCray as told to Betty Wertz TRI STATE TREASURES November 1973 Our five townships and their one-room school houses in the early 1900’s were as follows. OUR COUNTRY SCHOOLS OUR HIGH SCHOOL At the turn of the century, the consolidated school was in an experimental stage. Until then, the only means of rural education was the one-room country school. It had replaced the log structures of the pioneer period. Two rows of desks lined each side of the room. Four or five windows on opposite sides of the room furnished a perfect crosslight so disastrous to the eyesight. The front wall space was covered with blackboards, and in front of the blackboard was the teacher's desk and chair. Long, backless benches were in front of the teacher’s desk. Here, on the recitation benches, each class sat to recite their lessons for the teacher. The small space at the back of the room served as cloakroom, lunch- room, and recreation center. The rear walls had pegs to hang coats and hats, and a bench was along the wall on which to place the lunch pails. On a shelf in the corner was a tin water pail with a dipper hanging beside it on a peg. Everyone used the same dipper. A stone jar equipped with a spigot and over replaced the water bucket in time and the children brought their own drinking cups. Heat was supplied by a wood-buring stove in the middle of the room, and uniform temperature was impossible. Wood gave way to coal and later to oil. Electricity was added to give better visibility and those who walked for miles to get to school soon were provided transportation either by bus or by car. The teacher in our one-room schools was responsible not just to teach, but to clean the school house, build the fire each morning, oil the floors in the summer, have anything repaired, and many other duties now performed by other staff mem- bers. The teacher was also a nurse, janitor, parent, and princi- pal. Student life was different then. A student could have the experience of attending all classes each day of the eight years in school. If a student did not understand something one year, the student would perhaps learn it another year by just listen- ing to the other classes recite. There were recesses, one in the morning and one in the afternoon, each day plus an hour for lunch. There was no indoor plumbing, so exterior housing was provided. The times that the students were out for recess and lunch are perhpas the most remembered. Some outdoor games were: prisoner’s base, side base, “Ant-e Over,” kick-the-can, colored eggs, crack-the-whip. Red Rover. Some of the indoor games recalled were: Blindman’s Bluff, hot-butter beans, checkers, button-button, and crocono. Friday afternoons were often special whenever teacher would permit “arithmetic bat- tles”, “geography battles,” and “spelling bees.” Then there were the special times of year The Thanksgiving Program and The Christmas Program. What days to remember! In 1926, the Board of Education of Bethel township de- cided to establish a high school in their township. In the fall of 1927, the first high school classes were held- in the I.O.O.F. Hall in Warfordsburg with Mr. George Weiss as teacher and principal. The new high school was being built in Warfordsburg at this time, but the students did not occupy the new building until the spring of 1928. The next fall another teacher. Miss Freeda Duvall, came to teach and another class was added. By 1929, there were three teachers and forty students in the high school. Bethel Township High School graduated seventeen young men and women in its first graduating class in 1931. Belfast Township built a new grade school about the same time as the high school was built. This is known as the Need more Elementary. Brush Creek. Thompson, and Union Townships still maintained their one-room schools. The stu- dents would now have the privilege of attending high school once they had completed their eight years in the elementary buildings, but bus transportation was not available for all these areas at this time. During the late 1930’s, Bethel High School became known as Warfordsburg High School, and in 1952 Warfordsburg High School became Southern Fulton High School. The 1957 class ring was the last one to read “Warfordsburg High School.” In 1954 a new wing was added to the Warfordsburg build- ing because of the increase in student enrollment. Then in 1958 it was decided to begin construction for a new building. Whenever the new Southern Fulton Jr.-Sr. High School was completed, students moved into it for classes in January, 1959. The new building now houses grades 7-12 from all the five townships. Grades 1-6 now attend the Warfordsburg and Needmore Elementary Schools, because with the new building all the one-room schools in the five townships had their doors closed forever to students. Changes have been made from the little one-room school to our Jr.-Sr. High with its many rooms and teachers. The halls have been given a new coat of paint this summer (1976) and it looks almost as good throughout as the day it was built seventeen years ago. Our school is still continuing to grow and space is difficult to find for everything, but our school is modern in design, and our facilities are very educational and worthwhile. We might sit and dream of the days gone by in the one-room school and wish sometimes that those days would return, but in our hearts we know that “now” is the best time of our life, and we should look to the future by learning from the past. 102 “HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS THEN AND NOW” Akers, Layton, Dot tie (1965------) Anderson, Erma (1965-------- -) Aurand.
