FOREWORD It is with great pleasure that we, The Class of 1961, present the ninth edition of “The Chieftain.’ We shall try to picture some of the Curricular and Extra-curricular Activities in our school lives that will influence the kind of lives we shall live in society. Some other factors that cannot be pictured have helped give us as good secondary education as possible. These are the new educational facilities, and the cooperative efforts of our Administration, Faculty, Parents, and Students. May we look back on our high school days at Southern Fulton, and even though we may forget facts, may we remember the principles for which our school stands. CONTENTS Page 4 . . . JUNIORS Since we entered high school in 1958, many changes have occured in regard to both our class and Southern Fulton High School. Following the usual pattern, our enrollment has dropped from nearly one hundred to fifty. The Juniors have formed the nucleus of the school newspaper staff; many have been out for Glee Club and Basketball; several Juniors were honored by being selected to take part in the Senior Class Play this year. We look forward eagerly to our own Class Play this spring. The tentative selection is “A Rocket In His Pocket,” the story of a high school scientific genius. Our Activities this year will consist of: bake sales, school sweaters to sell, roller skating parties and dances. We are also looking forward to ordering our class pins, which is customary. Besides this we are planning to develop our minds a little more, if this is at all possible. JOINT CARPENTERS APPRENTICESHIP COMMITTEE 1499 Irving Street Washington D. C. EIGHTH The eighth grade is divided into three sections with homerooms under Miss Gladys Yeakle, Mrs. Viva Murray, and Mr. George Elbin. After a year and a half in the new building, the eighth has become acclimated to the Junior-Senior High School organization. The difficulties that occured during the transition have been overcome and our pro- cedure is now routine. Our class is divided into three sections which contain a total of 91 students. Some additional courses that have been added to the curriculum are Practical Arts, Home Economics, Art, and Physical Education. Our extra-curricular activities are Jr. High School Chorus, Intra-Mural Sports, and Library Club. With our improved facilities and curriculum of which we now are a part we feel our progress has been steady during the past school year and our experiences rewarding. SENIOR CHORUS At the beginning of the I960-461 school term, the Senior High School Chorus began preparing the musical portion of the Dedication Service for their new Jr.-Sr. High School building, November 13. The group had an excellent opportunity for a dress rehearsal with an audience when they sang for the County School Board members on October 24. At Christmas the Junior and Senior High Choruses combined talents to sing appropriate Christmas selections, and led the student body in carol singing. Near the end of the school year the singing group made its grand finale with a Spring Concert. JUNIOR CHORUS The Junior High School Chorus was quite busy at the beginning of the school year preparing for its musical contribution to the Dedication Service of the School. After Dedication Service, the group prepared themselves to be “singing Gypsies” for the Carnival on November 18. At Christmas time, they joined the Senior High School Chorus in singing Christmas music and leading the student body in carol singing. In ttye spring, the chorus sang their portion of numbers for public enter- tainment at the Spring Concert. BERKELEY CLUB BOTTLING MFG. CO. 613 So. Washington Street Berkeley Springs, W. Va.
