All in a Season ofFootball The 1972 football season was disap- pointing as indicated by its record. It seemed to be a hopeful year but turned into a year of maturing young players and learning by mistakes. The season opened for Southern with a strong surge by defeating Wesleyan, 31- 21. This surge was soon halted by a 27-10 defeat against Clarion State. The Owls spurted back with an overwhelming of- fense, beating Maine Maritime, 41-10. Springfield was next to fall in defeat 42-10, with a brilliant running performance by senior back Larry Kane. Waiting for the snap VL L, Coach Shay gives his instructions. The only two wins came against Central Connecticut State College and Fairfield University. Other games could have been won if the defense had been more closely knit, and if the offense had been able to move the ball more effectively. Co-captain Larry Caldwell had a fine season, leading his teammates in scoring with eight goals. Co-captain Mike Gannon also made significant contributions to the team effort. Leading the team effort in scoring was Senior Debbie Foisey, who contributed 12 of the 32 goals scored for the year. An outstanding for- ward line was paced by Kathy Glenewinkel. Building the evening around his new single, Superstition , Wonder delighted his audi- ences with renditions of his past hits. My Cherie Amour and For Once In My Life each brought thunderous applause. His newest song, the very beautiful f'You and I , was also well received. Ending with the dynamic Signed, Sealed and Delivered , Wonder enjoyed an enthusias- tic half-hour standing ovation. A capacity crowd awaits. Stevie Wonder performs Byrds stage exciting show Our world moves at an incredible pace. Some- times things happen so quickly that we lose sight of what is really the most valuable. If it were not for nostalgia, much of what we have believed to be good would surely be lost. Nostalgia - where would we be without it? Nos- talgia might well have been the key word of the September 22 concert by the Byrds. As the Byrds performed several of their oldies, it became appar- ent that the beautiful and heavy sounds which they were famous for in the past are still very much with us. Playing with the smooth transcendence that has always characterized their music, the Byrds delight- ed their audience with an interesting variation of Mr.Tambourine Man . The Byrds were certainly not far from the truth when they chose as the title of one of their albums, Younger Than Yesterday . 29 Christine jorgensen speaks In an attempt to provide a wide variety of speakers of interest to the College community, Programs Council kicked the year off with the September 20 presentation of a lecture by Miss Christine lorgensen. The attractively blonde Miss lorgensen displayed amazing poise as she spoke about her experiences as the first person to change sex through the use of modern surgery and hormonetreatments. Speaking before a capacity corwd on the contro- versial topic of transexuality, Miss Jorgensen grace- fully addressed the audience as to how the subject had literally become her life. After holding a question and answer period, which Miss lorgensen handled with complete ease, the audience left the auditorium satisfied with the realization that today's world allows for the discus- sion of such subjects in a truly responsible manner. 30 fer 'iw A ffm 1 aw? Parents Day Wh en the gap disappears The annual College Parents' Day was held on October 14, in order to help familiarize parents with a representa- tive cross-section of campus activities. Providing an excellent opportunity for parents to par- ticipate in both the academic and extracurricular activities of their sons and daughters, Parents' Day served as an effective way of introducing parents to the style of life on campus. Scheduled events included a coffee hour, welcome addresses by President Jennings and Student Government President Phil Stull, planetarium shows, an art exhibit, a swimming exhibition, and a luncheon. Parents and stu- dents also had the option of attending either the S.C.S.C. versus V.W. Post football game at Bowen Field or the Crescent Players' performance of Wait Until Dark . Senator Weicker explains a point. An estimated crowd of three-hundred people was on hand to hear a pre-elec- tion day speech by Senator Lowell Weick- er on October 25, 1972. Rather than speak in direct contrast to Senator Frank Chruch, his democratic counterpart, the Republican legislator from Connecticut refrained from supporting one particular party or candidate. Instead, he stressed the responsibility of the American citizen- ry to choose its governmental leaders on the basis of mature and intelligent judgements. On October 6, 1972, Senator Frank Church was greeted at Lyman Auditorium by Students interested in the political issues of the day. Senator Church, a Democrat from Idaho, spoke in support of George McGovern for President, or rather against Richard Nixon. His speech dealt with the controversial campaign issue of corrupt government under President Nixon. Senator Church supported his theme by discussing the findings of Ralph Nader, the ITT scandal, and the Wat- ergate affair. Addressing himself to the Republican charge that McGovern continuously waivered with regard to poli- cy, Church termed Nixon the whirling dervish of American politics . The Idaho senator stated that while Nixon claimed to be against the wage and price con- trols, he had still put them into effect. It was additional- ly noted that the president has promised to curb feder- al spending and to promote the value of the dollar in the world market. According to Church, both plans had failed. Urging his audience to vote for Senator McGovern, Church cited other blunders of the Nixon administra- tion. The highest unemployment rate in one decade, the worst inflation in two decades, the most unfavor- able balance of trade in eight decades, the largest defi- cit since World War II, and the steepest rise in crime since the turn of the century, were all viewed by Church as proof that what the country did not need was another term with Nixon as President. Gone was the aggravation of being asked to show an I.D. that wasn't yours, or even worse, not to have one to show at all. With this in mind, the Career Planning' and Placement Services at the College held three days of conferences in occupational planning to aid students in consideringtheir future. The Conference included skill seminars de- signed to instruct students as to methods of searching for careers, taking interviews, and writ- ing resumes. Occupational seminars provided in- sight into some promising fields for college graduates. Mr. David Pinsky of the Governor's Economics Advisory Commission was also on hand to speak about the state and national employment trends for the college graduate. An interested student confers with speaker Seniors take pointers at one of the many workshops. Southern on Wall Street Seeking to bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world, the College's economics Club visited the New York Stock Exchange in early November. Students gained first-hand knowledge of the functions performed by the Big Board as they viewed floor trading from the visitors gallery above the exchange area. Also involved in the tour were mechanical models which explained organizational set- up of the exchange, dollar linkage between investor and corporate treasury, and flow on exchange activity. The field trip did much to promote stu- dent understanding of the concepts and theories in the economics process. Weekly excursions take students of oceanogra- phy and marine biology to the Sound where they receive first hand experiences in research and problems ofthe waters, The Estrellita was a gift to the College from a retired sea captain, Mr. Perry Stevens. Mi Hum-drum describes the bodies we pass every day. Face after face, there is little to distinguish one from an- other. But then like a shooting star, we see one that is dif- ferent- physically made the same, but through it a per- sonality shines. A look at him tells you that he has devel- oped a unique self. And what rnore can one ask but to be onetruly ofhis own. l ff Distinct Personalities - What we want to be 'fp , 'Q J f NEW 4, Wt-4-rn Ora. 'Q an , Ax. Is it possible that there are students on this Campus who never visit the C.U.? Well, of coursep but for those who do use the facilities, there are surprises every day. Bits and tid-bits of information fill bulletin boardsg fas- cinating displays fill the showcasesg current drives and ac- tivities radiate from tables set up in the lobby. Some students find the Commons their home on Cam- pusg others prefer the lounge for relaxation. Pool and ping-pong players gravitate down to the game room, and the reading lounge attracts those who do have studying. Campus organizations also use the building for activities and business. Somehow, someway, certain people easily stroke the right lines, the right col- ors, the right feelings and produce true art, as expression of themselves. . fssti ' mm sm RMA- 1 .. .V P O U r M A, I . The involved took to probing such is- sues as financial aid, 24 hour parietals in the dormitories, health services on campus, and parking dilemmas. The Student Government faithfully held their meetings each Monday night in hopes of bettering many campus situations. Phil Stull lead the group as President and Andy Kostas stood by and assisted him as Vice- president, aw ' 130 css The Laurel The Laurel was faced with making several adjustments this year. The first came with a switch to new advisors, Rita Landino, lim Walsh, and Dick McGinnis. A late start in staff organization also delayed progress. But with the conscientious efforts of several staff members, the book was steered into form. The finished product is in your hands. The Laboratory Approach to the Sciences The Science Departments at the College use one of the most effective means of learning, learning by discovery through laboratory expe- riences. Most basic courses meet for two hours week- ly in lecture and are supplemented by a two hour lab period in which students are given opportunity to manipulate and experiment with materials. The laboratory experience truly provides a lasting and meaningful re-enforce- ment of practical knowledge. 13? -' VW ? 4, Siik Q will A 'Q 'WJQFR K 22, ,Q ,s-Q, ! . -W Looking over what was here before us it will be here after ia fl'h21'f'Kiiw12g1'-s .1113-faQa.fi. ,,x, M 52 EN Gi. sr ' E !gfi 5 i':Q g:5 'i1if 3wI..N:Una2ffaL ZW QUT? ff- I--A ffl vm w 1 z' 2 , ff.
