l dedicute t his Professor Pauline Schwartz ioined the faculty of New Haven State Normal School, now Southern Connecticut State College, in 1931. For the past thirty-three years she has given unending leadership, guid- ance, and encouragement not only to students of Southern, but to stu- dents all over the world. Her lifelong interest in student activities led her to become the spon- sor and prime mover in the present People-to-People Program. With such great and active interests, it was quite natural for her to be as- signed the work of advising the foreign student contingent with the many problems they encounter. in a faculty noted for its interest in the student body, Professor Schwartz stands above all others. Her entire life has been devoted to helping people. What many of the 4,890 students who have graduated from S.C.S.C. owe to Professor Schwartz is beyond repay, but the debt is freely acknowledged. Her interest in people and her whole-hearted concern for human relations can be seen permeating her entire life, for she has devoted her energies to promoting college and student activities, not only here at Southern but at other organizations as well. Local and state church organizations have benehted from her dili- gent attentions as has the AAUW. ln i960 she was honored by being asked to serve on the Mayor's Citizen Action Committee and the Com- munity Ambassador Program of l-lamden. ln December of i963 the debt was acknowledged in a testimonial dinner given in her honor by the l-lamden Rotary Club. Her influence has spread beyond the city, the college, and the state. ln i953 she was invited by the U.S. State Department to visit Europe and report her findings. On numerous occasions she has acted as host- ess for the State Department for both foreign students and professors visiting Connecticut. Quite naturally, Professor Schwartz's participation in' national affairs rose to the international level. With the organization of the U.N. in New York she began a new activity, that of helping students and adults understand and appreciate the UN, with a series of annual visits to this great world meeting place. As recognition for these activities she re- ceived a National Citation for her significant promotion of world peace. Our School and Community Program at Southern began as an effort on Professor Schwartz's part for the students of our college and social agencies of New Haven to work together for the benefit of mankind. .9
