Ch 09encies gf Newwiyl c l dedicute t his Professor Pauline Schwartz ioined the faculty of New Haven State Normal School, now Southern Connecticut State College, in 1931. For the past thirty-three years she has given unending leadership, guid- ance, and encouragement not only to students of Southern, but to stu- dents all over the world. Her lifelong interest in student activities led her to become the spon- sor and prime mover in the present People-to-People Program. With such great and active interests, it was quite natural for her to be as- signed the work of advising the foreign student contingent with the many problems they encounter. in a faculty noted for its interest in the student body, Professor Schwartz stands above all others. Her entire life has been devoted to helping people. What many of the 4,890 students who have graduated from S.C.S.C. owe to Professor Schwartz is beyond repay, but the debt is freely acknowledged. Her interest in people and her whole-hearted concern for human relations can be seen permeating her entire life, for she has devoted her energies to promoting college and student activities, not only here at Southern but at other organizations as well. Local and state church organizations have benehted from her dili- gent attentions as has the AAUW. ln i960 she was honored by being asked to serve on the Mayor's Citizen Action Committee and the Com- munity Ambassador Program of l-lamden. ln December of i963 the debt was acknowledged in a testimonial dinner given in her honor by the l-lamden Rotary Club. Her influence has spread beyond the city, the college, and the state. ln i953 she was invited by the U.S. State Department to visit Europe and report her findings. On numerous occasions she has acted as host- ess for the State Department for both foreign students and professors visiting Connecticut. Quite naturally, Professor Schwartz's participation in' national affairs rose to the international level. With the organization of the U.N. in New York she began a new activity, that of helping students and adults understand and appreciate the UN, with a series of annual visits to this great world meeting place. As recognition for these activities she re- ceived a National Citation for her significant promotion of world peace. Our School and Community Program at Southern began as an effort on Professor Schwartz's part for the students of our college and social agencies of New Haven to work together for the benefit of mankind. .9 To The Members of The Class of 1964: NoThing in The life of a college presidenT brings him greaTer saTisfacTion and pleasure Than ThaT of acknowledging The successes of his sTudenTs and graduaTes. Mainville. lt has been generally agreed upon by most people who follow football, that the T963 slate of Southern Co-nnecticut's op- ponents was the roughest small college schedule in the East. The Owls were hampered early in the season by inexperience in key positions and later in the season, by injuries to such stand- outs as senior end David Mills, who broke his leg in a practice session, and, iunior full- back, William Gargano injured his back in the Hofstra contest. Despite all this, Coach Jess Dow's Owls still managed to post a re- spectable 4-4 record. Southern opened the season with a close i3-6 win over the University of Bridgeport. This kept alive S.C.'s record of never losing a football game to the Purple Knights. Al- though Montclair beat Southern 36-i4, the Owl line led by seniors Raymond Mainville, Richard Ponte, James Barber, and co-cap- tain Henry Owens, held the N.J. team to scant yards rushing. Mistakes and bad breaks hurt the young Owls in the contest. ln the pulsating i7-i5 victory over Ge- neva, the winning touchdown was scored by senior end, Nicholas Cuttulle, who fell on a loose fumble in the end zone. After consecutive loses to Youngstown and West Chester, two perennial power- houses, by scores of T2-O ,and 20-O, the Owls reached the high point of their season with a Homecoming victory over strong Hofstra College 27-25. After iumping off to a quick 27-O halftime lead on the passing of iuniOF quarterback Robert Blake, and the receiving of senior end, co Owl line hung C blistering second men to post the r the win, the bigg Season of l956, Southern closer Sllollg llliico Colle Pl'iQ American if on G Held goat Ciotti in the finnl win The necticui WGS Com tion of Pres. Coach Dow called the win, the biggest since the undefeated season ot i956. Southern closed the season by losing to a strong lthica College team 36-12 and by top- ping American International College i7-i5 on a field goal by sophomore Lawrence Ciotti in the final minute of play, to post the win. The game with arch rival Central Con- necticut was cancelled due to the assassina- tion of Pres. Kennedy, thus depriving Coach Dow ot his iOOth victory since coming to S.C.S.C. in TQ48. With such backtield aces as Blake, War- ren Miller, Martin Roberts, Peter Barile, Peter Torres, and co-captain elect William Gar- gano returning next season and with strong linemen such as Ciotti, co-captain elect Thomas Hunt, Jay Valentine, and Michael Katz available, hopes are bright for a ban- ner year in 1964. Next season will see the Owls playing its roughest slate ever by adding Temple Uni- versity and East Stroudsberg Teachers Col- lege to the previously strong slate. .QQYHE cleft' DUNN. FDDTBRU. 3. Fred Rowland GYMNASTICS The gymnastics team under the watchful eye of Coach Abie Grossfeld, tied one and won two meets this year. Although this may not impress anyone, it is rather remarkable since half the season was com- pleted following the dropout of Greg Speck and Dan Sternbeck, two of the team's top men, Also during the year, captain Bruce Davis suffered a broken ankle and was forced to complete the sea. son with a cast on his ankle. Bruce did a fine job this year and will be looking forward to a better season next year. Senior member of the team was Michael Zotta who gave many fine performances on High Bar, Parallel Bars, and Floor Exercise. The team was helped by the Hghting spirit of Fred Rowland, Southern's top long horse vaulter and side horseman. Fred is also a strong prospect for a posi- tion on the rings next year. We would also like to congratulate the other mem- bers of the team.
