SCRANTON VY BARNARD if ,ri , ' fu . 3 '91 ' fn v ' 'fr fini' if 'f' Fr W ROGER SHERMAN Our memories of pleasant college years will always be strongly entrenched with the experiences that we encountered at the various training schools. Roger Sherman, lvy, Scranton and Barnard were the proving grounds of whether we were destined to be teachers. The children and faculty there cheer- fully accepted the avalanche of iuniors in December, 1949, and who can forget those crowded conditions of having four student teachers in a classroom. The helpful guidance of those teachers in the training schools helped us put into practice well-formulated theories learned in the college. ln the fall of 1950 many of us returned to these training schools for our final period of practice teaching, while others went into out-of-town facilities. It was during our senior year that we fully realized that it is not plant that makes good education, but rather the methods and inspiration which are acquired from schools such as Roger Sherman, lvy, Scranton and Barnard that develops better teaching. The entire student body was required to attend morning chapel assemblies, which were first held daily, then weekly. Monitors who sat at the end of every row, checked attendance and absentees were immediately reported to the dean. School principals and superintendents from surrounding areas were invited to speak with variation on a standard topic, How To Be A Successful Teacher. lt was the highly approved policy of one college principal fthe college president did not come into being until the four year college program was initiatedj to have all students walk through the halls quietly on tip-toe, and often would be seen reprimanding a teacher who was clomping along in her high heels. Social affairs consisted of dancing to a victrola at noon hour in the third floor gym, and the cafeteria, being the pleasantest room in the school lnow the chemistry lab roomi, was where the students could gather very quietly for a few moments of relaxation. The faculty consisted of twenty members, and the dean taught all freshmen for at least one course. Male students were the exception rather than the rule, and their enrollment was limited to three men per year. However, these situations are but memories now fsweet or otherwisei, and the coming of men in force to T. C., notably the large group of veterans of World War ll, brought about changes that were eminent. Increased enrollment resulted, which brought about an expansion in building facilities, number of classes held lSaturday classes inauguratedi and the need generally for separate class functions rather than for all-college affairs. - A Contemporary 72 gl 1950 VARSHY FOOTBALL ROSTER POS.
