Hurte ' The success of any endeavor will be found in the leadership which is provided. Certainly the Southern California Military Academy can, in large measure, attribute its outstanding program to the leadership as provided by the Superintendent of the Academy. During the past thirteen years he has served the Academy in every capacity, and in the true sense has come up from the ranks. As a sum- mer counselor, chaplain, teacher, commandant, principal, and for the past five years as Superintendent, he has given unstintingly in every area of service. He is a graduate of John Brown University, he has done graduate study at the Bible Institute of Los Angeles, and California State College at Long Beach. During World War II, Major Hurte served in the Pacific Theatre aboard the heavy cruiser, Chicago, attached to the Seventh Fleet. His dedication has been an inspiration to the Cadets, parents, and his fellow workers, and We take this opportunity to salute Major George I-Iurte, i ,,,.,A,...-........,- ........,,., - Vw-A,-H ,, A---..,,...,v .,. rv . Summer vacation is over, it's back to school again. Sun- day, the day of the reception, finds the Cadets dressed in their best, and meet- ing their new teachers for the year ahead. The next day, Resident Cadets check into the barracks. First stop: Headquarters, next: The Comman- dant's Office, then to the barracks. Tuesday, the buses are rolling and classes are running full steam. The first Week, cadets are busy receiving textbooks and Working their way through the endless pages of the Stanford Achievement Tests. Recess: a time to meet old friends and also make new ones. After school hours include: football practice, preparing for inspection, and free play. Common questions are: Whose room are you in? What bus do you ride? Is it our day for canteen? Quickly names are learned, schedules are followed and everyone soon realizes that Septem- ber and School mean the same thing. J-gint 1, Q Y. By this time the cadets are well into their studies. The A and B football teams have won their first game of league competition. Many new friendships have been formed. The canteen, as always, is a popular spot. Many new items, in- cluding jackets with your name on it, have been added. Everyone likes a picnic! The Parent Association is no exception. There is always a lot of food, a variety of races, games and people, people, people. The cadets are involved in their military tests as part of the qualifications for promo- tions. Hup, two, three, four. During the last week of October you can hear the Kindergarten cadets singing about pumpkins and witches. The Gideons visit bringing New Testa- ments. Excitement fills the air as the first Dress Parade of the year draws near. Everyone stands straighter, marches better, and looks extra nice for the big day. Chapel, Dress Parade and the Tea. NOVEMBER . . . We are now over the first hurdle of grade cards and Dress Parade. Once again the A Football team takes their weekend trip to Fort Irwin where they get a real taste of Army life. Preparations are being made for the homecoming football game. There are pictures of the candi- dates for queen, the pep assembly where we learn some new yells and songs. The Drill Team is getting in step for the half time activities while the band is getting in tune for their pep songs. The Resident cadets always enjoy the Thanksgiving Din- ner. This is a time when the Faculty, Staff and Resident cadets enjoy the bountiful blessings of harvest time. We are grateful to God for His Good- ness to us. Before vacation there are tests to take, departures for the Resi- dents to be made, and thoughts of turkey. Everyone looks forward to the Thanksgiving Dress Parade. That's because vacation follows. Now there are threeg the A, B and C Teams. It's a busy time until the next parade and vaca- tion. Each day the Glee Club can be heard during the activity period prac- ticing for the Christmas festivities. The White House CHeadquartersJ takes on a new appearance with its Christmas decorations. Colored lights shining in the night remind us that Christmas is drawing near. Little cadets singing Christmas Carols seem to take on an angelic appear- ance. Christmas trees brighten up the classrooms and barracks. Christ- mas carols are played over the loud- speakers. While the junior cadets are preparing for Santais visit the residents of Au barracks go caroling, bringing news of Peace on Earth, Good Will to Menu to nearby faculty members and friends. Once again it's vacation time. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR. li. Congratulations I leave you with This Thought . . . With the Christmas vacation over, books take the place of toys. The once dormant campus is now alive Cjumping is more like itj with activity. The beginning of a new year brings new resolutions-better grades, less demerits, less trips to the Principal's office. Now that the Parent Association drive is ended the perpetual plaque now rests in Mr. Staten's 9th grade room. New cadets quickly make new friends, learn the rules and become involved in Acad- emy life. Daily basketball practice pays off in skills learned and victo- ries won. Another trip to Ft. Irwin. This time all three teams go for bas- ketball. The motor pool's face lifting is now completed as well as new im- provements in the classrooms. Extra activities include ushering at the Korean Orphan choir concert. Books are studied more faithfully as exams draw near. ., X W , . Mj.W4g'l?E Titty.. M Q TARY FEBRUARY . . . The shortest month on days but not activities. More bas- ketball games. The A team's visit to Catalina Island for a basketball game land don't forget the plane ridej proved exciting. While the cadets of the lower grades exchanged valen- tines in the classrooms, cadets in the upper grades sent theirs out to a select few or that certain someone. Science projects Clive animals-and some not so alivej math workshops and a spelling bee were included in the Sth and 7th grade class night. The Parent Association initiated something new-a Dinner Fashion Show- Suddenly It's Spring . Bob Daniels, nationally known religious singer and recording artist presented a concert in the chapel on Dress Parade day. After the parade there was the rush to the canteen to get ribbons, chevrons, or maybe officers' pins. Unwelcome February visitors were rain and the flu. Some anxious moments-then it happens. First, one, then two, three chicks are hatched. It's hard to tell who is more excited, the teachers or cadets. Herbie, the duck, born in room 99914 competes for attention, For the resident cadets with birthdays during the month, cake and ice cream are provided at the birth- day table. The 4th and 5th grades have a musical setting for their class night. Cadets gather around the bul- letin board with mixed emotions viewing the results of practical and written exams for military promo- tions. It's report card time again. May it bring back memories of friends acquired at S.C.M.A., of activities shared, and of the values and lessons learned A yearbook does not just happen. It would be difficult to esti mate the number of hours spent in planning layouts, sorting proofs and pictures, writing copy and other tasks too numerous to list here This year, a Cadet Staff carried most of the load. My thanks to Donald Duncan, Howard Heyden, Ronnie I-Iurte, and Charles Sousa. Thanks to Major Barham for the advertising section. Without the ads we could not have a yearbook. Please patronize our advertisers. Roberts Studio was most cooperative and Willing to go the extra mile. Also thanks to those who helped here and there. Last, but certainly not least, thanks to Mr. Stevener of Inter-Collegiate Press for his ideas and professional touch. Bob H.
