Williams, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Pocahontas, was moved in a strange and powerful manner by the vision of a Baptist college in Pocahontai After this, Mr. VVilli- mm and Rev. G. E. Neely went afield to many leading pastors of North- east Arkansas and Southeast Missouri. The Vision found ready acceptv ance in many hearts and minds, and a beautiful spacious building was Offered by the Pocahontas city government. The response to the pm- posal was so overwhelming, that at Founders' Day, June 10. 1941, nearly two hundred Baptists set up the formal organization for the opening of the school. Again intercsL was shown in that the college was opened on September 101 of that year. inchad of at the originally planned January, 1942, opening date. An all-time Arkansas record for college openings was set, ForLy-twn students. a number of whom were from several other states. were matriculated. There is much more to tell of the miraculous procurement of the faculty and the abundant financial response from churches and indir vithlals during the st six years of the existence of the school. Funds have been received for the operatiori of the college from servite men in the European and Pacific theatres of the recent world war, and from Michigan, Oklahoma. Texas. Tennessee, Illinois, Kansasi Missouri, and other, states. Churches in ever increasing numbers are taking upon themselves their rightful responsibility tor Ihe success 01 Southern Bapr list College. Southern's enrollment For 1947748 has reached the 550 mark. with students from more than 23 states. 115 physical property has increased from a $50,000.00 plant to one of $1,500,000.00 all within six years. She lost her original building in Pocahontas by fire December 26, 1946, and yet by January 10 she was in full operation in buildings at the Walnut Ridge A11 Facility. These buildings have recently been an quired by Lhe college from the War Assets Administratinn on a discunnt basis. Her faculty and staff have been trebled since the first year She is expanding I0 ever larger and larger fields of service to students who wish training in a Christian college. She is training the Hrural pastor far the rural church. For students who qualify, Southern is now offering two years Of liberal arts college training. In addition she is offering many vocational courses so that the student may learn how to make a living as he is also taught how best to live.
