The creation of this annual yearbook is the synthesis of Southern's joy and victories, her faults and failures. We are the typical students of Southern Baptist College ! close- ly woven into a working unit but tempered to meet real- ities with a smile on our lips and a song in our hearts We have tried to follow the open road of wisdom in selecting the best material for this annual. Williams, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Pocahontas, was moved in a strange and powerful manner by the vision of a Baptist college in Pocahontai After this, Mr. VVilli- mm and Rev. G. E. Neely went afield to many leading pastors of North- east Arkansas and Southeast Missouri. The Vision found ready acceptv ance in many hearts and minds, and a beautiful spacious building was Offered by the Pocahontas city government. The response to the pm- posal was so overwhelming, that at Founders' Day, June 10. 1941, nearly two hundred Baptists set up the formal organization for the opening of the school. Again intercsL was shown in that the college was opened on September 101 of that year. inchad of at the originally planned January, 1942, opening date. An all-time Arkansas record for college openings was set, ForLy-twn students. a number of whom were from several other states. were matriculated. There is much more to tell of the miraculous procurement of the faculty and the abundant financial response from churches and indir vithlals during the st six years of the existence of the school. Funds have been received for the operatiori of the college from servite men in the European and Pacific theatres of the recent world war, and from Michigan, Oklahoma. Texas. Tennessee, Illinois, Kansasi Missouri, and other, states. Churches in ever increasing numbers are taking upon themselves their rightful responsibility tor Ihe success 01 Southern Bapr list College. Southern's enrollment For 1947748 has reached the 550 mark. with students from more than 23 states. 115 physical property has increased from a $50,000.00 plant to one of $1,500,000.00 all within six years. She lost her original building in Pocahontas by fire December 26, 1946, and yet by January 10 she was in full operation in buildings at the Walnut Ridge A11 Facility. These buildings have recently been an quired by Lhe college from the War Assets Administratinn on a discunnt basis. Her faculty and staff have been trebled since the first year She is expanding I0 ever larger and larger fields of service to students who wish training in a Christian college. She is training the Hrural pastor far the rural church. For students who qualify, Southern is now offering two years Of liberal arts college training. Religious Edumtion Southern 15 again honored by being represemed among the slate Baptist Student Union Officers. Tommie Hinson and Richard Perkins were elected devotional vire president and music chairman, respectively, in the election held during the State B.S.U Convcmion in Little Rock, October 30-31. Baptist students of Arkansas met at this annual convention representing almost every college campus. Southern was represented by the attendance 0! nineteen students. B. S. U. REVIVAL 0THAR SMITH, Evangelixt Rev. Omar Smith, pastor of the First BaptisL Church, chcr Springa. Ark, led our annual student revival during the week 01' October 16, 1947, under the ausplccs of the B.S.U. The Rev. Mr. Smith conducted two services daily at the chapel, He also conducted personal interviews and group discussions for both men and women. Visible results of the meeting were three professions of faith, we additions by bapmm, tour additions by lcucr, and a large number responding to the call for chcdicalion and special services. Wilfong John Floyd Wilson MUSICAL ECHOES FROM HARMONY HALL Few schools have a larger percentage enrolled in am Music Department than has Southern College. l! is also unusual to lind as much real talent as is lmmd her The robed dloir, with its morc-Lhan-lifly voices, the male ortene, and the girl's ensemble are made up or talent that any school miglll covet. A large number of voice and piano pupils have been enrolled, and there are null those on a waiting list. Although the tcachersl schedules axc filled to overflowing. they are still making efforts to accommodate all those who arc in terested in any phase at music. Mrs. Bcn H. Lincoln, who heads the department, has been with it since its beginning. She is a graduate of Ouachita College, and has done much gf'ddlh ate Study in other inslimtions. She directs all vocal music ltadwrs voice, piano and Harmony. This year, .VIrsl J. L Cusscy, who is also a graduate of Ouachitzx College, has been added to lhc department and teaches piano, and several classes in theoretical'work. Mrs. Cossey has specialized in Piano and Organ, and will begin leaching organ soon. The college is very fortunate in owning a beamilul Electric Estey Organ, which is located in the choir 1011 of the Chapel. Mrs. Bryan McFarland works in the department 01' Band inmuclion and assists in teaching the overflow enrollment of piano students. The College Choir has been well received on all its appearances, having made its initial appearzmcc this session 21 the Baptist Convention at Little Rock. Mmh favorable comment resulted from :his appearance, and also many inviLaA tions have been received for concerts in churches over the state. During the spring season, the choir will present a program in various towns of Arkansas and Missouri. The theme of this years program will be uRcdcmption , depicted through the use of choral selection and Choral reading.
