. The SOUTHERNER presented by THE SENIOR CLA SS SOUTHERN HIGH SCHOOL Route I Graham, North Carolina 1963 VOLUME III Foreword The year 1962-63 has been a mo- mentous one in the history of Alamance County Schools, for it has seen the ful- fillment of a long che rished dream, the completion of the High School Consoli- dation Program. This year Eastern and Western High Schools were opened for the first time to students who are justly proud of them, but for us there is no other place quite like our own Southern High School. Within the pages of this 1963 South - erner , the staff has tried to recapture for you the priceless memories of trea- sured friendships, the tingling excite- ment of a ball game, and the eager quest for knowledge- -all of which have helped to make our school truly the SOUTHERN PART OF HEAVEN. 2 Table of Contents Administration Curriculum Page 29 Classes Features Page 91 Activities Page 113 Sports Index ...... .Page 172 Advertisements Page 178 OUR GUIDANCE. . . 4 Our faculty guides us in every pEase of our life at Southern-academic, extra- curricular, or personal. It maybe a ques- tion of the college best suited for a student, the quickest way to solve an equation, the training for a good seamstress, just the right way to handle a basketball, or a simple excuse for yesterday ' s absence. No matter how great or small the problem, we are challenged by the enthusiasm of our teachers to search our own solutions and to ever broaden our knowledge. 5 OUR ACTIVITIES. . . ; S V — k 1 ‘ — 7 1 ' - 1 iBv ! - , v Varying from beauty to service, enjoyment to toil, the activities of our school are such that each student has an opportunity to participate in at least one that will appeal to his own interests. This school year opened with various activities related to the football season and cli- maxed with the Homecoming game and the crowning of our queen. Later in the year the Student Council sponsored the Miss Southern High Contest, and the students united in beautifying the gymnasium for the occasion. All through the year spirits were enlivened as students joined together in the Slop or the Twist, or as they harmonized with the Southern Sons. O UR SPIRIT Our spirit shows itself in many ways- -though the atmos- phere and feeling on the campus, our attitudes, and our participa- tion in all school activities, but principally through our loyalty and devotion to our school. With our spirit we accept and meet a new challenge and take pride in that which we have already accomplished. AND WE 10 We are the life of Southern. Without us there would be no need for gu id a r. c e , nor would there be any activities or spirit. We are the school; Our experiences in attending assembly, changing classes, or eating lunch, and solving our everyday problems such as an over stuffed locker or a lost kitten- -this makes up the school. • • • 1 1 MAKE THIS Ixr 12 HE A YEN Dedication To MR. ROBERT STOCKARD who as assistant principal has advised us and worked with us in all parts of school life, who as a teacher has instructed us and has given us a better under- standing of our scientific world, who as a man, through his own exemplary qualities, has inspired us to strive for higher personal standards, we dedicate the 1963 SOUTHERNER. 14 15 In Memoriam MR. WAYNE C. ROACH The 1963 Southerner staff wishes to pay tribute to the memory of Mr. Wayne C. Roach, a dedicated teacher, whose death on May 6, 1962, left a great void in the life of Southern High School. Because of his understanding of young people, his dedication to his profession, and his interest in growing things, we know that his influence will continue to live on in the hearts and lives of all those who were pri- vileged to know him. 16 V y and Administration 17 MR.
