Activities that build our school call for co -oper - ation and initiative. The Student Cotmcil operates a student store for the purpose of furnishing supplies to the students. Ice cream is sold after lunch, but it takes dedicated students to show our spirit and willingness to help. 1159 O 01114 Q ezyffzzszdslifc' spzkrzf .ai Various activities add an extra boost to our cur- riculum. All our students relive school life through our annual and newspaper. The staffs of these publica- tions gather information for future editions. In addition to extracurricular activi- ties, our students also have regular classes that give them time to put into action their ideas. e0Qcafe0fsfu0Q12f5 ZQCGUSQ gfffe y Of Our Southern belles reign over various activities. From the Senior Class, these girls were Frances Lynch, Ann Pickard, Anne Farrell and Barbara Pitts. Two attendants were chosen by each of the Junior, Sophomore, and Freshman Classes. Each club and activity chose a sponsor to represent it in this event. On the night of October 20, 1961, the band, sporting new uniforms and playing in superb form, took the field during the halftime of the football game. As they formed a heart, the attendants and sponsors waited outside the heart as the senior attendants in- side the heart watched the eventful moment when Frances Lynch was crowned queen and Barbara Pitts was announced Maid of Honor. The wonderful evening of foot- ball, Homecoming parade and crown- ing was brought to a close with a Homecoming dance. The Queen and her court were introduced with their escorts and led the first dance. This was an evening to be remem- bered by all among their fondest of memories. -+-ww-.-...,..a..,.,,.MM A tr :3 , Z , ff f ' P5 , gs - t , 'asa tis i I Q' ,:. Q ' y7zz,bff,f if O I? Raby, Steele, Manager, 159 I Southern, in its second outing of the year, showed the home fans some great football as they tangled with the Bessemer Whippetts. Coach Robertson's charges tossed up a stout defense and added a well-rounded running attack but still failed to defeat the Greensboro boys, who won the game 13 to 6. Southern opened its gridiron campaign against Mt, Airy at home, The Granite Bears, highly favored to win, ran up against a stout Confederate defense and managed to push across only one score. The extra point was good, making the final score 7-O favoring Mt. Airy. Southern bowed to Chapel Hill. In the last quarter two bad breaks, a blocked punt, and a fumble set up two Chapel Hill Touchdowns. These two, plus an earlier score and three extra points, resulted in a 21- O setback before a disappointed Father's Night crowd. The Confederates, who dominated Haw River through- out the game, were again denied the victory column.. Southern's tough defense allowed the lndians to cross the midfield stripe only once, that being the result of a penalty. The final score was dead locked 0-O. The Confeds, hobbled by injuries and sparked by re- serves, made an excellent showing by gaining a 14- 14 tie with Oxford. T. lobe, P. Stuart, and C. Jobe shone as they tallied 14 points for the Southern cause, . 2 X . x. f ,I , . ,V s V - ,Z -, 5 ,, Southern Alamance was handed their third conference loss of the season, 26-O, by Morehead. Four touch- downs and two extra points resulted in the final score. During the half-time ceremonies, the band paraded onto the field in their new Confederate uniforms. They formed a heart in which Frances Lynch was crowned Homecoming Queen of 1961. omecomzkyy 1961 Coach Robertson's Confederates were defeated by Me- bane, 19-0 before about 2,000 Confederate Home- coming fans. The Southern defense sparkled, holding the Tigers to only six points in the first half. After the game, a sock-hop was held in the gym to honor the newly elected queen and her court. The student body, teachers, parents, and alumni were in- vited to attend. A very enjoyable time was had by all. Journeying to Reidsville, the Southern Confederates tangled with the Lions and came home with a 6-6 tie tucked under their belts. Our team's single score came in the final quarter when Stuart passed to Rich for six points, I In their final game the Southern High Squad locked horns with the Bulldogs of Henderson. Henderson out- scored the Confeds 32 to 6, but all was not lost as the reserves saw some action in preparing for next year, Southern's only score came when Vance Garrett, full- back, bulled over the double-stripe for 6 points., Al- though losing, the Southern boys gave a good showing in their final game. ,- ff- ,X my ,M-1-wwf--fqgl--31 ' ' ' ' 4 Stair' 'I J ,,, ' ,-.5 :mx ,.
