Like the students surrounding me I sat trembling, waiting for class to begin. The stack of books on our desks looked ominous and appeared to prove the rumors which said that this professor was very difficult. His quick glance around the room when he walked in reminded me of one sizing up his prey. He spoke rapidly about class goals, style development and philosophy. Our ER ECM oe COM em aI ade IC Msc cem lem eee class more fearful than we had been before. Our fear of the slight man with the tight-lipped, warm smile faded along with the weeks, as he affectionately called co-eds “love,” cracked jokes in the halls and always took the time for little chats. We found ourselves actually looking forward to his class and hoped that some of his unending knowledge would flow to us through his P22 Ce bet mea ‘He was a questioner, and he expected us to become involved with him in seeking explanations about the grand mysteri es of life and the quiet wonders within each of MW Oehe xe elel ese aM sakes tM awh U OLE VIS Meee mJelae) lente melee m8 12 copious notes that came back on our papers conceptualized new possibilities and challenged us to reach higher and deeper to the potential he saw. When he contracted a rare disease that threatened his life, he called it a research project and determined to find out as much about it as he could. As he talked about the real meaning of life and how he was much wiser about it now that he was facing death, I fought back the tears. His wish for us was to grasp life’s essence and his prayer was that we seek God’s guidance. We left the classroom grateful to have touched a true master of living. Thank you, Mr. Gerhart, for challenging us in your classes and for the continuing inspiration of your life. twenty
