| | 1985 TORCH Southeastern College | 1000. Longfellow Blvd. Lakeland, Florida : Volume 40 “gt ... the Bible is the inspired and only infal- lible and authoritative written Word of God. ... there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. ...1n the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His vicarious and atoning death, in His bodily resurrection, in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, in His personal future return to this earth in power and glory to rule the nations. . in the Blessed Hope — the rapture of the Church at Christ’s coming. ... the only means of being cleansed from sin is through repentance and faith in the precious blood of Christ. . .. regeneration by the Holy Spirit is abso- lutely essential for personal salvation. ... the redemptive work of Christ on the cross provides healing of the human body in answer to believing prayer. ... the baptism in the Holy Spirit, accord- ing to Acts 2:4, is given to believers who ask for it. . in the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit by whose indwelling the Christian is enabled to live a holy life. . in the resurrection of both the saved and the lost, the one to everlasting life and the other to everlasting damnation. Southeastern College is a regional college, owned and operated by the Southeastern Districts of the Assemblies of God. Each cooperating district is represented on the Board of Directors. This board determines the policies and the operation of the col- lege, is responsible for the financial sup- port, and selects the administrative offi- cers of the college. The actual carrying out of the policies and the operation of the col- lege is the responsibility of the administra- tive officers. ALABAMA — Rev. Vaudie Lambert, Jr., Supt.; Rev. Nelson E. It was originally located in New Brockton, Alabama until 1940 when it was consolidat- ed with Beulah Heights Bible In- stitute in Atlanta, Georgia. The fi- nal move to its present location was not made until 1952. What began in 1935 as a burden for a Bible training school has grown into America’s third largest Assemblies of God college. The vi- sion to make Southeastern a Christ-centered school with aca- demic excellence has not died, but continues to burn in our present administration and student body. While looking at the past fifty years in perspective, we must real- ize that Southeastern College is the product of much prayer and sacrifice. Let us strive to continue in the vision. We truly have a cause for rejoicing when we realize that God has blessed Southeastern’s past and will continue in His faith- fulness for our future. Our new library is still only a picture but with the help of the Lord it will be a reality soon. CCRT eae OF €SncaTiogy PiiSical, és Southeastern’s faculty take a genuine “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.” A YEAR OF REJOICE IN THE LORD As Southeastern’s Fiftieth An- niversary approaches we can re- joice in the school, but let us also rejoice in the Lord daily. The joy of the Lord is our strength. When we think about what we've come through to where we are right now in the Lord, each of us will find that we have much to be thankful for. Thank Him for His presence when He seems far away. Thank Him for His guidance that leads us to righteousness. Thank Him for His unfailing love when no one else cares, and His wonderful deeds when we need a special touch. Thank Him for His provisions, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry. Thank Him for the victory in the midst of the battle. Thank Him for His sal- vation so rich and free. The list of things to be thankful about is end- less but I Thessalonians 5:16-18 sums it up well. “Be joyful always, rie ¥ yee | pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” wee eens Toe Noth Arnica =: ou in missions?” “Could I interest y “T know that check tis in there!” a = ea el “Those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength.” A YEAR OF REJOICE IN FRIENDSHIP When we look back at the years that we have spent at Southeast- ern, some of the most im portant memories that we will have will be of the special friendships that we made. Memories of the craziness of dorm life, lighthearted pranks, sil- ly jokes and frivolity will go with us. But more precious will be the friendships that made us grow as both humans and as Christians. Memories of prayer partners on our halls, encouraging hugs, get- well cards, and secret conversa- tions about a confidential sweet- heart. Some of us will make a friend and decide to keep him or her around for the rest of our lives. Many of us will have met our spouses here by the time that we graduate. Even if we leave without a spouse, we will still have strong friendships to rejoice in. We will have friends who have seen us as we really are, who know our inse- curities and fears, and yet love us still. Let us remember to give God thanks for friendship. MR. HENNESY On behalf of the administration, the faculty and the student body, the 1985 Torch staff would like to dedicate this year’s yearbook to a man, not only totally dedicated to the Lord and to his family, but also to Southeastern. His vision to make Southeastern the finest Assemblies of God College, both in academics and spiritual life is evident to everyone. From the tremendous growth and change that has taken place at Southeastern, under his leadership for the past four and a half years, we can say that his vision is coming to pass. It is with great pleasure that we dedicate this anniversary edition to the man who deserves it most, President James L. Hennesy. CHEN MISSIONS Saith the Lord. The Missions Board had a booth reminding us that America is blessed. Many local churches also had booths for the students who are looking for a church away from home. The Flame, Torch, Drama Club, ROTC and many Sport Clubs each had booths to re- cruit new members. The cafeteria was patriotically decorated in red, white and blue to go with this year’s theme “Unite d We Stand”. Along with the booths and decora- tions there were also refreshments and music, all of which made the Welcome Center very successful. “Is this where I sign my life away?” 76 = = “Am I a Democrat or a Republican?” INTRAAURAL fc o [ir Ze CE = “Mother told me there would be days like this!” | } i | ALL TIED UP October 6, 1984 dawned bright and sunny for the 3rd Annual Alumni Challenge. Decked in shorts, Alumni T-shirts, and plen- ty of enthusiasm, the classes were ready for the battle. The crowds were entertained by such events as the bicycle race, the wheelbarrow race and the two-legged race just to mention a few. The competition ended up a battle between the “new comers” and last year’s “champs”. Who would reign? Point wise there was a tie between the freshmen and juniors so the last event, tug-o-war, determined the winners. The juniors came out on top but they split the prize mon- ey with the freshmen. = : : f Seo 8 : Pg | + Mol a. 4 : Ry MST Ee LMP, EAs Be eS ee Up, up and away! “They took off my training wheels!” 78 “... and that’s final!” ay “Lord, give me strength!” | f k © pti P Le ne us ‘Tm all tire-d out.” i Picking a date, Southeastern style. 2. Entertain- ment was provided by Russ Taff. This year the Jr. Sr. Banquet was held on Friday, March 15 at the Las Fantanas, a Spanish style restaurant in Clearwater. Dinner started at 7:30 p.m. and the menu included chicken cordon bleu, green beans, dutchess potatoes, and chocolate moose. Steve Archer was the guest entertainer. It is always a night to remember. She was ecially touched by the needs of the children. “Let the children alone, and do not der them from coming to Me: for the Kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these. : utthew 19:14 “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Each year Southeastern selects a group of students to go on missions trips during the summer. The students choose the country they would like to go ta and begin raising their support through family, friends, and their church. These trips are often life- changing events which serve to deepen the burden of the students for the dying world. Many of the interns return to their area of ministry during other trips or plan to return when they get out of school. Although Sue was not an intern, she went to Liberia during the summer where she ministered through the Word. Here she is chopping breakfast. “I have become all things to all men that I may by all means save some.” I Cor. 9:22 David Acosta Willie Ademon Joe Akin Dionne Anderson Terri Andrews Alisa Baggett Bill Bauman Edyth Belles Tammy Biggs Neil Bontrager James Brincefield Becky Briscoe Kenny Brown Chris Bullock Dorcas Cano Mike Chambers Michael Cole Vanessa Corder Joe Cox Cathy Davis Marie Davis Fred Earls David Elliott Loma Finchum er ve a ge et BP, Laura Freewalt Kurke Gary Carolyn Gray Tim Hampton Ronald Hoskinson Cecilia Huble Carole Hultgren Celeste Jenkins Joe Johnston Marc Jones Pamela Jones John Kanarek Terri Larkin Jean Laskey Terri Larkin Jean Laskey Roland Licona Steve Morrow Denise Milligan Shannon Mims Harold Moates Jeff Murphy Wayne Nations Joe Nelson Robin Newman Angie Nieves Daniel Otero Gladis Perez James Pittman David Powell Rick Ramsey Monna Reid Manuel Rojas Albert Skinner Marie Skinner Britt Smedberg Charlene Smith Steve Smith Pam Stewart Kipper Stitt Cathy Strickland Sherry Taylor Deborah Vardman Samuel Weaver Jeana Wells Vicki White Roberta Winter Dr. Linda Ligate, Pianist Mrs. Meredith Sharpe, Director sa ; F S oir Officers (L to R) Monna Reid, Secretary, Loma Finchum, Soprano Section Leader; ‘n Hampton, Bass Section Leader; Robin Newman, Alto Section Leader; Danny Otero, ‘nor Section Leader. SING TO THE LORD This year, the hard work and dedica- tion invested by the Southeastern Col- lege Choir truly paid off. The Choir was able to minister to a large number of people from different walks of life. Be- sides singing at churches (including lo- cal Lutheran and Nazarene congrega- tions) the choir was enthusiastically welcomed at the Lakeland Mall. The choir also took weekend trips to such places as Vero Beach and other churches in Florida. The choir’s director, Mrs. Meredith Sharpe, firmly believes in presenting a variety of musical styles in concerts. In this manner, everyone likes at least one piece that the choir performs. This phi- losophy has contributed to the warm re- sponse provided by the student body to- wards music presented by the choir. The choir is accompanied by the in- comparable Dr. Linda Ligate whose tal- ent enhances that of the choir. Togeth- er, director, accompanist and choir pro- vide an unforgettable musical experience. The choir must often pause to hear the expert advice of Mrs. Sharpe. As I prepared to send the last pages to the publishers I was overjoyed that the book was finally done. It has taken an incredible amount of time and work to get this yearbook together. I remember going into the yearbook room at 6:00 p.m. one night and coming out at 10:00 a.m. the next day. I remem- ber the million and one details that needed to be done, pictures to arrange, notes to write, names to get, money to raise, and trying to identify all those mugshots. I was thrilled the day the proofs began coming back and seeing the result of all the work. I’ve had to make decisions that weren’t easy but somehow everything always worked out for the best. I want to thank everyone who has helped me in any way. Your dedication and sacrificial giving was greatly appreciated. I praise God for the strength and courage He has given me and all the valuable lessons I have learned as a result of being editor. Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass. 132 A Often your tasks will be many, And more than you think you can do... Often the road will be rugged And the hills insurmountable, too... But always remember, the hills ahead Are never as steep as they seem, And with Faith in your heart start upward And climb ’til you reach your dream, For nothing in life that is worthy Is ever too hard to achieve If you have the courage to try it And you have the Faith to believe... For Faith is a force that is greater Than knowledge or power or skill and many defeats turn to triumph If you trust in God’s wisdom and will...
