They are technically skilled and participate in the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of patient care in su- pervised health care settings such as hospitals, rehabilitation and long term care agencies and nurs- ing homes. The program in practical nursing consists of theory drawn from physical, social and nursing sci- ence. Concurrent, supervised clinical nursing practice is provi- dedf in child, adult and maternal- newborn settings in cooperation with various community hospitals. Upon completion of the program, the graduate is eligible to write the state board test pool examina- tion for licensure. Students receive extensive hands on training in all the ap- plied areas of the clinical labora- tory, in addition to the theoretical background of each subject area. Hospital externship is a continu- ation of this process, culminating in each student ' s eligibility for the National Registry Exam. Upon successful completion of this total program, the students are prepared to enter the field as contributing members in the al- lied health sciences. I TOP MIDDLE: PIT STOP! The program includes three se- mester of English, Mathematics, and Physics in addition to over five hundred hours of Electronics classroom theory and seven hun- dred and fifty hours of practical laboratory training. In addition, the graduate has had twelve weeks of cooperative training as a technician working full time in a local related industry. The gra- duate will be prepared to make all the measurements and calcula- tions necessary of any technician. Since the graduate will have spent many hours learning to use a wide variety of test equipment, break- in time for the employer is signifi- cantly reduced. The Electronic Technology is a two-year program with half of the second year class out on Co-Op during the third semester, and the other half taking their place fourth semester, returning to graduate in early June. 29 34 ( p 1 ?L. -O O -f- J The educated Medical Assistant is able to function as both an admin- istrative and or clinical assistant in a variety of health care settings. As an administrative assistant, the Medical Assistant will be able to maintain patient records, com- plete medical and insurance forms, answer correspondence, properly process mail, schedule appointments, use proper tele- phone techmiques, greet and in- terview patients, transcribe medi- cal records, maintain medical re- cords, maintain financial ledgers, bill receive and record all office records, order supplies and keep an accurate inventory. As a clinical assistant the Medical Assistant may check height, weight, tem- perature, pulse, blood pressure, assist the patient in positioning and draping for physical examina- tion, learn sterilization techniques in the utilization of clean instru- ments and supplies in order to perform reutine tasks, in the per- paratory process of the basic the- ory and techniques of electrocar- diographic procedures. Further, the course provides the student with an awareness of and an expo- sure to the basic laboratory pro- cedures, ie., routine urinalysis which includes: color, appear- ance, pH specific gravity, a albu- min and sugar, blood work, he- moglobin, hamatocrit, UCG slide method only, that may be per- formed in the physician ' s office. The Medical Assistant has the unique privilege of acting as a liai- son between the physician and or other health care workers and their patients. The opportunity af- forded the Medical Assistant in this regard is one of great impor- tance and responsibility. 43 SOUTHEASTERN TECHNICAL INSTITUTE DENTAL ASSISTANT PROGRAM The Southeastern Technical Insti- tute prepares its Dental Assistant graduates to become an integral part of a professional team dedi- cated to the oral care and welfare of people. In preparing for a career in dental assisting, the student must learn a cast amount of information about dentistry. The course channels this information into an environ- ment where students transfer it to a hand-on learning situation. The Dental Assistant student will assist the teaching doctor, set up trays for different procedures, expose radiographs, perform laboratory procedures, assist the patient in seating, check pulse and blood pressure, secure patient medical history, learn sterilization tech- niques, perform inventory con- trol and a variety of other tasks. The Southeastern Technical Insti- tute is affiliated with Harvard Dental School at the Paul Dever and Wrentham State School cam- puses, and with Tufts Dental School at their V.A. campus in Brockton. Students will be as- signed to the dental clinic at these sites for one afternoon a week. These assignments provide hands- on training, where the student will work in actual dental situa- tions. During the third quarter, students are assigned to a dental office, or Harvard ' s Boston campus for a 12 week externship. At the comple- tion of this training, the student will be graduated, will take the Dental Assistant Certifying Exami- nation and will secure full time employment. Placement of the Technical Insti- tute graduates has. been excellent. Students are almost assured of a position as a Dental Assistant. 49 What is Electronic Data Processing?
