It is with these thoughts that we, the Seniors, dedicate this book to the premise that what we have given will benefit those who follow us and what we have taken will help to improve our world. THE CLASS OF 1976 r SOUTHEASTERN REGIONAL THE SCHOOL r 70 Student Council Officers 72 74 Little Drummer Boy Cafeteria Staff 76 Mr. Capone Mr. Holland Ms. Soper 82 Mrs. Knox Mr. Barrows Mr. Drew Donald E. Graves Superintendent Mi. Kelleher Mi. Ayvazian Miss Himmelman 93 On the following pages are the athletes of our school; they come to Southeastern, as do the entire student population, from nine different surrounding communities. These communities are rich in the heritage of our country. East Bridgewater, for example, possesses a plot of land on West Union Street known as the Rogers Sheldon mill site. The history of this site dates back to at least 1760 when the Keith Iron Works was located there making it one of the first iron slitting mills in this country. West Bridgewater is the site of the famous Pulpit Rock; originally located on one side of the Town River. The Rock is now located in West Bridgewater Memorial Park. The first minister of Bridgewater, Reverend James Keith, preached his first sermon on this rock in 1664. On November 27th, 1707, the Town of Norton was incorporated. It had a population of 1,966 people, consisting of farmers, coppersmiths, shoemakers, carpenters, weavers, machinists, painters and one physician. Mansfield received its name in honor of William Murray, Earl of Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, England. Captain Myles Standish came to this piece of land to give it its name and stopped at a place called Cobbler ' s Corner, which still stands today. Brockton was originally part of the common lands of the old Plymouth Colony. In 1649, the land now designated as Brockton was deeded to Captain Myles Standish by Chief Massasoit following a transaction involving merchandise valued at approximately $30 . 00 . Sharon is one of the oldest communities in the Commonwealth, having been settled in 1637. The first iron was dis- covered in Lake Massapoag and with this iron came the first cannon in the area. Easton was originally part of a large area of land purchased from the Indians by Captain Thomas Willett for the original Plymouth Colony. Foxboro was named after Charles James Fox, an Englander who opposed the king ' s treatment of the colonies and defended the conduct of the colonists. The Foxboro Volunteers who fought at Bunker Hill were proud to name their town after such a man. Stoughton, incorporated in 1726, was one of the largest towns in Massachusetts; it included by present day standards the towns of Canton, Sharon, Avon, parts of Foxboro, Dedham, Westwood, Walpole, Norton, Wrentham and Brock- ton. 100 When Coach Ayvazian assembled his players in August for their first practice it was obvious that this years team had exceptional talent and experience . The team fin- ished in second place last year, and this years squad set out to achieve what no other Southeastern Football team has done - to win the Mayflower League Champi- onship. The Hawks opened up with three shutouts; the most impressive one being over cross town rivals, West Bridgewater 30-0. The Hawks then defeated the defending League Champions, Apponequet 26-0, and were on their way to the title. Unfortu- nately, due to some key injuries mid-way through the season which had shattered the Hawks dreams of an undefeated season with back to back losses to Provincetown and Duxbury; however, the ball club proved to be true champions and came back to win the rest of their games, of which two were considered must games as the Hawks disposed of Nantucket and Manchester with ease . The arch rival, Blue Hills, were no threat to the powerful Hawk machine as they were handedly defeated by a score of 40-7. One of the key factors to the success of this years team, and cannot be overlooked, is the playing of Big Ed Nelson, our all Scholastic Fullback. Ed scored 106 points and gained 1,082 yards, his third season over the 1000 yard mark and second over the 100 point mark. Captain Jim Brodie along with many outstanding seniors and underclassmen, too numerous to mention, deserve a great deal of credit - therefore we salute Our Champions - a job well done by all of you. ■HBJmR COACHES AND TEAM AWARDS William Bobo Kelly Memorial Award - FRANK KINGMAN Best Offensive Player - EDWARD NELSON Best Defensive Player - JAMES BRODIE Most Team Spirit - FRANK KINGMAN Unsung Hero - JAMES McNAMARA Rookie of the Year - JOHN DEVINE Most Valuable J.
