Cars Cars are everywhere on campus — and they are hardly ever parked In the right positions as indicated by the parking space lines. But nonetheless, cars are a vital part of the college stu- dent’s life at SOSG. The commuters depend upon them to get them to Durant safely and quickly. The resi- dent students depend upon them to get them out of Du- rant. Cars are a bit of a sta- tus symbol — from the modified ’Vette to the old clunker with 20 kinds of paint holding the rust to- gether. Books piled to the ceiling, clothes scattered across the room, alarms standing next to stereo equipment — this is dorm life. Students shar- ing bathrooms or bedrooms for the first time find the activities a bit trying at first as they rush in for a quick shower five minutes before class begins and finds a roommate beating them to the hot water. Dorm life 19

Broke College costs money. Sometimes, pocket money or change has to keep a student going for a month or more — until the paycheck or money from home gets delivered. The extras in a college student’s life take a lot of money, too. Hitting the right spot for a study session, taking a date to the best place around, field trips to Dallas or Oklahoma City, little things like toothpaste or soap, books, paper and so forth, bite into the savings accounts and “nickels and dimes” disappear in a hurry. 18

Enrollment Enrollment is more than just standing in line waiting to see an advisor or dean, or waiting to have your money taken to pay for classes, or even trying to buy books. A major part of enroll- ment is computer cards linking the student to a particular class. Enrollment is time. It takes time to find the right class available and to go through the different lines to get the right signatures. It takes time to decide what direction your educa- tion will take as a student goes through enroll- ment. Friends Friends are the best part of college life. Stranger in class often become the best of friends whil working an algebra problem or struggling with research paper. Friends are there for advice or t give a shoulder to cry on when that special dat turns out to be a dog. This part of campus life i almost the best part of college because a friend i for life. 20
